This study aimed to investigate the challenges and opportunities of online testing during the outbreak of COVID-19. The main focus was on the under-graduate and post-graduate international students in various universities of India. This study employed a qualitative design as the data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings showed that the attitude of students towards online testing was positive even though they experienced worry and anxiety. Moreover, students used self-strategies to overcome such challenges such as improving their self-confident and motivating themselves during online tests. In terms of ICT skills, the findings showed that students did not face any challenges during the online testing, which supported the idea that is online testing does not require professional skills, and students could improve their ICT skills as a main requirement for 21st century education. Additionally, the findings of the study showed that there were other online testing challenges faced by students, including the transmission from traditional tests into online tests, and the poor connection of the internet. However, online testing advantages outweighed the challenges, especially when online testing is considered to be a good alternative method in such critical stations like the outbreak of COVID-19, and it would be suitable for future online learning. Accordingly, online testing should receive more focus by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to get along with the educational requirements of the 21st century.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on university students in Malaysian universities as well as its effect on their learning. Design/methodology/approach The study employed a quantitative design, as the data were collected through a survey. The participants were 219 students, divided as follows: 102 local students and 117 international students in Malaysian universities. Findings The findings showed no significant difference in terms of the psychological impact of COVID-19 among students according to the variables, nationality (local and international), gender and level of study. The descriptive analysis showed that the outbreak of COVID-19 made the students anxious, worried and restless. Besides, the outbreak of COVID-19 made the students unable to focus on their study, feel anxious about studying, have less confidence on their leaning and commit more mistakes than normal days. The psychological stress made online learning during the isolation period less effective and less helpful for students, which made them more worried about their academic achievement and future study plans. Originality/value COVID-19 is a current issue, and the psychological effect of COVID-19 on local and international students and their learning has not been covered in previous literature.

The tendency for internationalization of higher education in many Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) around the world, including those of Malaysia, is increasing with the current wave of globalization; however, the main challenge of international HEIs is how to manage intercultural diversity and overcome intercultural learning challenges that affect international students’ learning outcomes and learning sustainability. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate intercultural learning challenges that affect international students’ learning sustainability through a proposed measurement model. The data were collected from 273 international students in Malaysian HEIs through a survey and were analyzed using variance-based structural equation modeling (i.e., PLS-SEM). The results showed that intercultural challenges did not have a significant effect on students’ learning sustainability. Nevertheless, language challenges, academic challenges, and research challenges were found to have a significant negative impact on the learning sustainability of international students. The study concluded that intercultural learning barriers are considered to be intercultural learning challenges, which have a negative effect on international students’ learning sustainability even though international students might overcome such challenges with the passage of time. In addition, the study identified different factors pertaining to international students’ learning sustainability, such as students’ language and learning skills, Higher Education Institutions’ educational systems, and lecturers. Based on the finding of the study, Higher Education Institutions need to create a clear framework that encompasses these factors to improve learning sustainability among international students.

Cloud computing (CC) delivers services for organizations, particularly for higher education institutions (HEIs) anywhere and anytime, based on scalability and pay-per-use approach. Examining the factors influencing the decision-makers’ intention towards adopting CC plays an essential role in HEIs. Therefore, this study aimed to understand and predict the key determinants that drive managerial decision-makers’ perspectives for adopting this technology. The data were gathered from 134 institutional managers, involved in the decision making of the institutions. This study applied two analytical approaches, namely variance-based structural equation modeling (i.e., PLS-SEM) and artificial neural network (ANN). First, the PLS-SEM approach has been used for analyzing the proposed model and extracting the significant relationships among the identified factors. The obtained result from PLS-SEM analysis revealed that seven factors were identified as significant in influencing decision-makers’ intention towards adopting CC. Second, the normalized importance among those seven significant predictors was ranked utilizing the ANN. The results of the ANN approach showed that technology readiness is the most important predictor for CC adoption, followed by security and competitive pressure. Finally, this study presented a new and innovative approach for comprehending CC adoption, and the results can be used by decision-makers to develop strategies for adopting CC services in their institutions.

This chapter aimed at exploring how to formalize informal CALL in learning English language skills. The focus of the study was on learners' ICT skills and learning strategies and CALL elements. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four learners. The findings showed that adult learners in this age of technology do not need any training to use CALL to study English language. Moreover, adult learners have acquired the learning strategies needed for studying English informally through CALL. In terms of CALL elements, the findings showed that there is a need to integrate the elements of behaviorist CALL, cognitive CALL, and constructivist CALL to make informal CALL more effective. Therefore, the focus should be directed to providing professionally-designed CALL tools that suffice the needs of the learners by those who have educational background about language teaching and learning. This will enhance informal CALL learning and make self-directed learning more efficient.

This paper suggests a new model to teach language skills. The aim of this model is to integrate the three most influential theories in the process of language teaching and learning which are behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism. This model explains how these three theories are integrated with each other in the process of language teaching and learning to complete each other taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of each theory. This model is mainly used for teaching language skills which are reading, writing, speaking and listening. Reviewing previous literature, it is clear that there is no integrated model that has tried to link these theories although there are suggestions from scholars to integrate them in a single model because there is no theory that can describe the whole process of learning without the interference of the other theories. This model suggests that teaching any skill can be divided into two phases. The first one is introducing the skill theoretically and the second one is practice. The first phase requires constructivism in order to build the students’ knowledge concerning the skill, and the second one is practice which depends on behaviorism through providing different drills to students. Cognitivism is the link between constructivism and behaviorism. Thus, creating knowledge is the core of constructivism but it is mentally driven as it requires cognitive processes. Also, behaviorism focuses on practice and it did not account for the cognitive processes which are essential especially because practice is associated with the mental activation of all the linguistic knowledge. Therefore, the paper discusses the three theories and the rational for the new model as well as the process of teaching following the suggested model.

The aim of this needs analysis article was to investigate the students' needs for computer assisted cooperative learning (CACL) in studying reading skills. The needs analysis depends on present situation analysis (PSA). The result of the analysis showed that both professors and students use the internet for reading outside the university. Moreover, both professors and students showed that the students need CALL, cooperative learning in studying reading skills. There is a need, therefore, for implementing computer assisted cooperative learning in teaching reading comprehension skills because this is a new method for Yemeni students and it might help them to improve their reading skills as reading has not been improved among Yemeni university EFL students in the last two decades. More importantly, although Yemeni students have not experienced e-learning before, they are willing to accept CACL as a new teaching method.

The study aimed at identifying the level and sources of foreign language reading anxiety among Yemeni students in Malaysian universities. Besides, it aimed at finding out whether there are statistically significant differences in the means of responses of Yemeni students in Malaysian universities according to the variable ‘Level of study’ (Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD). The study is quantitative as it used Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS) to answer the study questions. FLRAS was distributed to general groups of Yemeni students in Malaysia in the form of an online survey. The number of participants who responded to the survey is 100 Yemen students who are preparing their bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees in different majors in Malaysia. The results of the study showed that the level of foreign language reading anxiety among Yemeni students in Malaysian universities is of moderate level across the three groups. More importantly, the result of the analysis showed that there are no statistically significant differences in the means of responses of Yemeni students in Malaysian universities according to the variable ‘Level of study’ (Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD). The findings of the study highlighted an important point in the investigation of foreign language reading anxiety which is the environment. Thus, studies on intercultural learning stated that the host culture is a source of learning anxiety; however, the moderate level of reading anxiety across the three groups in this study might be attributed to the fact that the medium of instruction and reading materials in Malaysian universities are in English language. Therefore, this finding makes a crystal-clear difference between reading anxiety and general intercultural learning anxiety in the host cultures where English is the medium of instruction. Students, instructors and researchers in this area might benefit from the findings of this study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the types of request strategies employed by Yemeni and Malay secondary school students in English language. It also aimed at investigating the influence of social power and social distance on the students’ choice of request strategies. The data was collected through a discourse completion test (DCT) and the analysis used both Blum-Kulk’s et al. (1989) Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP), and Scollon and Scollon’s (1995) politeness system. The findings of the study showed that both groups often use non-conventionally indirect request strategies by means of query preparatory. The analysis revealed that both groups do not take into consideration the social power and the social distance between the interlocutors because they always use the same strategies with any person. The students have this sociopragmatic knowledge in their mother tongue; however, both groups are not sensitive to the social power and social distance existing between the interlocutors as they lack the sociopragmatic knowledge in the target language. Moreover, the students almost use the same strategies even though they have different cultural backgrounds, and this might be attributed to their assimilation in the school learning environment which is a positive indicator for conductive learning environment.

This study aimed at investigating the level of foreign language anxiety experienced by Yemeni University EFL students. Although many scales have been developed to measure the level of anxiety, each scale investigates anxiety in one skill except Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) which investigates anxiety mainly in speaking and listening. The current study developed a new scale called Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLAS) which fused the three scales with modifications in order to investigate the level of anxiety in the four skills. This scale scored .807 in Cronbach’s Alpha Validity test. The participants are 155 Yemeni University students and the results of the analysis revealed that 13% of the students experienced high level of anxiety, 69% experienced moderate level of anxiety, and 18% experienced low level of anxiety. The general level of anxiety among Yemeni university EFL students is moderate as they score 138 out of 240.

This study aimed to investigate the gender differences in terms of anxiety among Yemeni university EFL learners. It also aimed to investigate the correlation between the level of anxiety and the academic achievement of the students. The participants of this study were 155 students chosen from the population through stratified random sampling. The participants are selected from English Department, Faculty of Arts, Ibb University, Yemen. The data was collected by using a questionnaire adopted from Yassin (2015), and the data was analysed by using 22nd version of the SPSS. The data of the first question was analysed by using T-test and the result of the analysis showed that the females experienced higher level of anxiety than male students, but the difference between both groups is not significant. The second question was analysed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the result showed that there is not significant correlation between the level of anxiety and the academic achievement of the students.
