The paper deals with the economic efficiency of decentralized and centralized strategies of distribution goods in terms of both internal efficiency of firms and external costs of logistics processes (first of all external costs of transport). The author developed a model (using an electronic spreadsheet) in order to calculate the economical efficiency in the micro and macro dimensions in order to find the distances on which distribution using one central warehouse is more profitable than decentralized distribution. The results of the simulations show that the strategy of centralized inventories can be in many cases an economically effective strategy although not for deliveries on very long distance. The results confirm that the benefits of centralization are lower inventories, although the simulations do not confirm the applicability of the square root law to calculate the level of inventories. However, they confirm a positive impact on the level of logistic customer service, measured by the availability of stocks. Better service is probably the main benefit of this strategy. In order to investigate the impact of individual parameters on the total costs of logistics processes 1300 simulations were carried out for various cases: The volume of annual sales, fluctuations in demand, the value of distributed goods, the number of warehouses in a decentralized system and the width of the product range, costs of warehousing, and maintaining stocks, and the distance of transport and in deliveries to customers.

The paper presents the problem of the impact of the competitiveness of maritime transport on the efficiency of global supply chains on the example of the apparel industry. With the use of a model developed by the authors, simulations of the profitability of the sourcing in low-costs countries (Bangladesh, China) have been conducted. The model takes into account the specificity of the apparel industry, parameters of cargo, value of goods, and demand characteristics. If freight rates for maritime transport services were to increase significantly, the profitability of production in the Far East compared to local or regional production would be lower particularly for cheaper products. The level of these freight rates is not the main factor of the efficiency of this strategy. Simulations revealed, that changes of costs of production has greater impact on this profitability. In the garment market the possibility of quick response to demand is often more important than costs. The calculations were made on the basis of data obtained from Polish companies, which order production in countries with low production costs and transport garment in containers by sea and from transport and logistics operators.

The paper relates to the development of intermodal technologies used in international trade, together with factors which will influence that development at present and in the future. The aim of the paper is to assess impact of the integration of intermodal chains on logistics costs and thus on global trade. The special emphasize is laid on the problem of the diversity of standards of containers and transport technology in different parts of the world. This research is based on the available statistical data and information obtained from leading logistics operators. The authors conducted comparative analysis of the economic efficiency of usage of different sizes of cargo units, both standard and non-standard, relating to representative intermodal chain between the USA and Europe. In order to assess different scenarios a model was elaborated for calculating the total costs of such a chain, and transport efficiency analysis with the use of this model were conducted. The results of research presented in the paper confirm that integration of intermodal chains thanks to standardization of loading units in a global scale could be profitable. The results of logistics cost analysis prove measurable benefits for logistics operators and as well as their customers.

The issue of the paper concerns the range of outsourcing of logistic services in the clothing companies. The paper presents the results of research carried out in Polish companies. The range of outsourcing is influenced by place of a company in a supply chain (a production or a distribution company) and specificity of manufactured goods (clothes on hangers or folded, mass or individualized product). In some cases, companies only outsource transport services, in others also storing (in whole or in part), supply and e-commers service.

The paper deals with the problem of the productivity of transportation services in freight road transport. The considerations focus on the market in Poland. It presents the results of calculations made by the author. The goal of it was to identify possible factors of this productivity. Classical measures were used – tkm/vehicle and EUR/vehicle. The main thesis was that the productivity of this sector transport is influenced by external factors (area and GDP of country) and thus independent from transport companies. The relations between this productivity and its factors and observed phenomena seems to be confirmed in case of Poland but surprisingly not on the European level. Because of that the author postulates to conduct further and deeper research.

The paper deals with the problem of the economic efficiency of outsourcing of organization of transport processes. It presents the results of the research studies from the literature and also research made with the use of an electronic model of economic benefits of cooperation with an external service provider. The model was developed by the Author of the paper and was used to make simulations of different strategies from the perspective both of a carrier and a transport user. According to the results profitability depends rather on the parameters of a process of delivery of goods – average demand, standard deviation, weight and value of transported commodities than on the costs of transport.

The authors of the article here describe scientific achievements in the field of transport modelling with emphasis on intermodal transport models. Already developed models, described in the scientific literature and used in practice are discussed and their relevance to various scientific phenomena and relationships assessed. The authors point out the limitations of these models and submit the requirements that should be met in order to create effective decision-making tools. The models should provide support to achieve the research objectives for which they were developed (the observation of phenomena, the influence of different factors on the analysed phenomena, streamlining the decision-making process, optimal solution choice).

W artykule omówiono problem tz w. efektu skali w transporcie, zwłaszcza w trans porcie drogowym. The paper discusses the problem of the so called “scale effect” in transport, especially in the road transport. In practice the are many factors, which influence the effectiveness in this branch of the economy. Mostly these are external factors independent of transport enterprises. The share of such factors is especially high in the road sector. What’s more it is very difficult here to obtain the benefits of scale due to the limited loadcapacity. The goal of the paper is to present practical determinants of the economical effectiveness of the road transport and factors enabling the obtaining scale effects.
