A multisymplectic structure on a manifold is defined by a closed differential form with zero characteristic distribution. Starting from the linear case, some of the basic properties of multisymplectic structures are described. Various examples of multisymplectic manifolds are considered, and special attention is paid to the canonical multisymplectic structure living on a bundle of exterior k-forms on a manifold. For a class of multisymplectic manifolds admitting a ‘Lagrangian’ fibration, a general structure theorem is given which, in particular, leads to a classification of these manifolds in terms of a prescribed family of cohomology classes.
In this paper, we study the underlying geometry in the classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The proposed formalism is also valid for nonholonomic systems. We first introduce the essential geometric ingredients: a vector bundle, a linear almost Poisson structure and a Hamiltonian function, both on the dual bundle (a Hamiltonian system). From them, it is possible to formulate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, obtaining as a particular case, the classical theory. The main application in this paper is to nonholonomic mechanical systems. For it, we first construct the linear almost Poisson structure on the dual space of the vector bundle of admissible directions, and then, apply the Hamilton-Jacobi theorem. Another important fact in our paper is the use of the orbit theorem to symplify the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, the introduction of the notion of morphisms preserving the Hamiltonian system; indeed, this concept will be very useful to treat with reduction procedures for systems with symmetries. Several detailed examples are given to illustrate the utility of these new developments.

Some aspects of the geometry and the dynamics of generalized Chaplygin systems are investigated. First, two different but complementary approaches to the construction of the reduced dynamics are reviewed: a symplectic approach and an approach based on the theory of affine connections. Both are mutually compared and further completed. Next, a necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the existence of an invariant measure for the reduced dynamics of generalized Chaplygin systems of mechanical type. A simple example is then constructed of a generalized Chaplygin system which does not verify this condition, thereby answering in the negative a question raised by Koiller.

We treat the vakonomic dynamics with general constraints within a new geometric framework, which can be useful in the study of optimal control problems. We compare our formulation with the one of Vershik and Gershkovich in the case of linear constraints. We show how nonholonomic mechanics also admits a new geometrical description which allows us to develop an algorithm of comparison between the solutions of both dynamics. Examples illustrating the theory are treated.
The purpose of this paper is to show that, at least for Lagrangians of mechanical type, nonholonomic Euler–Lagrange equations for a nonholonomic linear constraint D may be viewed as nonconstrained Euler–Lagrange equations but on a new (generally not Lie) algebroid structure on D. The proposed novel formalism allows us to treat in a unified way a variety of situations in nonholonomic mechanics and gives rise to a version of Noether theorem producing actual first integrals in the case of symmetries.
