Araceli Queiruga-Dios was Graduate in Physics at the University of Salamanca (Spain) in 1998, and obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the same university, in 2006. Her major field of study is public key cryptography, together with educational tools and mathematical applications for engineering students. Since 2007, she is Assistant Professor in Mathematics at the Department of Applied Mathematics at the School of Industrial Engineering at the University of Salamanca. She has participated as coordinator and collaborator in several research projects at national and European level. She has participated in several national and international workshops and conferences, and also in journals. Her current research interests include cryptography (secret, public and protocols), malware propagation models, and the applications of mathematics to education.
Project Goal: Define new rules to assess mathematical competencies

Sophomore students from the Chemical Engineering undergraduate Degree at the University of Salamanca are involved in a Mathematics course during the third semester and in an Engineering Thermodynamics course during the fourth one. When they participate in the latter they are already familiar with mathematical software and mathematical concepts about numerical methods, including non-linear equations, interpolation or differential equations. We have focused this study on the way engineering students learn Mathematics and Engineering Thermodynamics. As students use to learn each matter separately and do not associate Mathematics and Physics, they separate each matter into different and independent compartments. We have proposed an experience to increase the interrelationship between different subjects, to promote transversal skills, and to make the subjects closer to real work. The satisfactory results of the experience are exposed in this work. Moreover, we have analyzed the results obtained in both courses during the academic year 2018–2019. We found that there is a relation between both courses and student’s final marks do not depend on the course.

One important health problem that could affect diabetics is diabetic foot syndrome, as risk of ulceration, neuropathy, ischemia and infection. Unnoticed minor injuries, subsequent infection and ulceration may end in a foot amputation. Preliminary studies have shown a relationship between increased skin temperature and asymmetries between the same regions of both feet. In the preulceration phase, to develop a smart device able to control the temperature of these types of patients to avoid this risk might be very useful. A statistical analysis has been carried out with a sample of foot temperature data obtained from 93 individuals, of whom 44 are diabetics and 49 nondiabetics and among them 43% are men and 57% are women. Data obtained with a thermographic camera has been successful in providing a set of regions of interest, where the temperature could influence the individual, and the behavior of several variables that could affect these subjects provides a mathematical model. Finally, an in-depth analysis of existing sensors situated in those positions, namely, heel, medial midfoot, first metatarsal head, fifth metatarsal head, and first toe has allowed for the development of a smart sock to store temperatures obtained every few minutes in a mobile device.

Difficulties in the curricular units (CU) of the mathematical science area, particularly those related to differential and integral calculus (DIC), are often found among students of engineering degrees, leading to high failure rates. A research work was developed with the objective of finding the reasons that lead the students to fail in the CU of DIC (CU-DIC) taught in the 1st year of the engineering undergraduate degrees at the Coimbra Engineering Institute (ISEC), in Portugal. Applying a case study methodology, this article will present a current diagnosis with the objective to establish relationships between teaching methods and students’ learning strategies, and besides, we propose to build learning environments that lead to higher success. The analysis of collected data allows us to conclude that the CU-DIC in the ISEC maintain an identical distribution in the hourly load in several engineering degrees, where contents are adjusted to each context taking into account the CUs of each degree. The data analysis found better results in the academic year that includes two examination moments without any relationship between class attendance, dropout and pass rates. We propose some different teaching/learning strategies in CU-DIC and new learning environments that enhance freshmen students’ engagement and participation in their own learning process.

Traceability and monitoring of industrial processes are becoming more important to assure the value of final products. Blockchain technology emerged as part of a movement linked to criptocurrencies and the Internet of Things, providing nice-to-have features such as traceability, authenticity and security to sectors willing to use this technology. In the retail industry, blockchain offers users the possibility to monitor details about time and place of elaboration, the origin of raw materials, the quality of materials involved in the manufacturing processes, information on the people or companies that work on it, etc. It allows to control and monitor textile articles, from their production or importing initial steps, up to their acquisition by the end consumer, using the blockchain as a means of tracking and identification during the whole process. This technology can also be used by the apparel industry in general and, more specifically, for ready-to-wear clothing, for tracing suppliers and customers along the entire logistics chain. The goal of this paper is to introduce the more recent traceability schemes for the apparel industry together with the proposal of a framework for ready-to-wear clothing which allows to ensure the transparency in the supply chain, clothing authenticity, reliability and integrity, and validity of the retail final products, and of the elements that compose the whole supply chain. In order to illustrate the proposal, a case study on a women’s shirt from an apparel and fashion company, where a private and open blockchain is used for tracing the product, is included. Blockchain actors are proposed for each product stage.

Environmental education (EE) has become the only tool for environmental sustainability in training processes in Colombia, for basic cycles in primary and secondary, as well as university education. EE tends to transform human actions in nature, based on multidisciplinary knowledge that supports decision-making. Its goal is to generate a change in social behavior in order to achieve the recovery, conservation, and preservation of the environment. In Colombia, education for sustainable development (ESD) is embedded in EE. These educational models (EE and ESD) seek to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), which generally seek the economic and social well-being of nations, both for current and future generations. Environmental engineering is a relatively new degree course in Colombia and Latin America since it appeared in the mid-nineties, and it must involve EE within its curriculum. Students are trained in this trend. This research intends to demonstrate, through a curricular review of the environmental engineering curricula and also surveying students from this degree, the level of inclusion of EE in Latin America. Strengths are identified in the curricula, such as the strong presence of EE in disciplinary subjects and opportunities for improvement based on the needs of the students. The situation in South America is also included in this study.

In this work a novel model to simulate advanced malware spreading is introduced and analyzed. It is an individual-based model such that the dynamics of the malware outbreak is governed by means of a cellular automaton. The network topologies considered are complex random networks and each device is endowed at every step of time with one of the following possible states: susceptible, infected, attacked and recovered. A study analyzing the influence of topology variability and the structural characteristics of initially infected devices is done.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a set of sensor devices deployed in a given area that form a network without a pre-established architecture. Recently, malware has increased as a potential vulnerability for the Internet of Things, and consequently for these networks. The spread of malware on wireless sensor networks has been studied from different perspectives, excluding individual characteristics in most of the models proposed. The primary goal of this work is to introduce an Agent-Based Model for analysing malware propagation on these networks, and its agents, coefficients and transition rules are detailed. Finally, some simulations of the proposed model are included.

Have you ever thought what would happen if a ransomware infected your laptop? This type of virus kidnaps files and encrypts them, and the only way to recover the data is by paying in bitcoin or some other cryptocurrency. This situation is undoubtedly terrible. All of your work, projects, and personal files will not be available (unless you pay the ransom). The first time students watched a video that contextualizes this stressful situation, they thought that they had been attacked by a computer virus. Fortunately, the panic only lasted a few seconds. This is the way to start a game called breakout or escape room. The difference between these two words is that, in the first case, the goal is to open a padlocked box, while the objective of an escape room is to find the key that allows to get out of a room. Both games are similar, containing riddles, puzzles, problems and some clues that would help the players to find the solution. This study analyses the use of a breakout game for educational purposes, more specifically in a university context. The experiment conducted mixes game–based learning methodologies with engineering students learning Linear Algebra, Calculus or Cryptography, which has allowed us to obtain promising results about the usage of this methodology.

In 2017, we proposed a European project: Rules\(\_\)Math, in order to find new rules to assess mathematical competencies. This proposal was a consequence of what we were facing separately in our daily classes. We teach mathematics in several engineering schools, and we want to change the way of teaching and learning for engineering students. Some university teachers from different departments usually teach mathematics as we have learned mathematics. They only give master classes but students usually want to write numbers and formulas to learn and practice mathematical reasoning and to distinguish mathematical symbols. To communicate in, with, and about Mathematics, they need mathematical thinking, and to use aids and tools for mathematical activity. We have included in this papers our proposal to make this possible, and to assess mathematical competencies.

One of the diseases that could affect diabetic patients is the diabetic foot problem. Unnoticed minor injuries and subsequent infection can lead to ischemic ulceration, and may end in a foot amputation. Preliminary studies have shown that there is a positive relationship between increased skin temperature and the pre–ulceration phase. Hence, we have carried out a review on wearables, medical devices, and sensors used specifically for collecting vital data. In particular, we are interested in the measure of the foot–temperature. Since there is a large amount of this type of medical wearables, we will focus on those used to measure temperature and developed in Spain.

We have been working, for some years, in the application of mathematics to different engineering problems with the main goal of improving our students’ motivation and make possible for them to connect and apply what they learn in Calculus classes to other engineering subjects. We describe a case study with students of Electrotechnical Engineering from the Coimbra Institute of Engineering (ISEC) and from Biologist and Geological Engineering degrees students from the University of Salamanca (USAL) in a Calculus course. The study involves the application of mathematical software in the calculus of a real situation: the estimation of the surface and length of an irregular figure: the Iberian Peninsula. Furthermore, we include the results of a pre‐ and post‐test control group study, before and after using that application in the classroom. The results indicate that those experiences were very enriching for the students in different degrees and in both countries. We tested at different centers from two different countries with similar results.

In recent the acquisition of mathematical competencies and engineers training in mathematics is a major concern of university teachers. It is well known that mathematics is not a favorite subject of engineering students and students in general sciences. We present and analyze in this paper the specific situation that we have encountered in two different European universities: The University of Salamanca (Spain) and the Czech Technical University in Prague. As in many other universities Discrete Mathematics courses are parts of the engineering bachelor degree curriculum. We will detail both situations, compare the assessment methodology and propose new goals for the future.

The team that has developed this project is part of a consortium of several European institutions that have joined with a common goal: to help the current engineering teaching-learning system, so that to make possible a competencies-based assessment. Moreover advocacy and networking will be part of the consortium activities during the whole project. RULES_MATH acronym corresponds to `New rules for assessing mathematical competencies', and that is exactly what we propose: to work with the mathematical competencies, specifically try to incorporate them into the assessment process. We focus on science and engineering degrees, since in all these studies several Mathematics courses are part of their curriculum, mainly in the first couple of years. In this paper we present one of our first activities that we want to achieve under the project: the selection of several tools and rules that will make possible an assessment and evaluation according to our high education common European space. These ideas are part of the objectives of promoting and institutionalizing good teaching practices and the enhancement of teaching materials. Other goals are to improve the dissemination of academic activities to the business world, administrations and society in general.

With the general objective of highlighting the changes produced in the teaching of mathematics in European engineering studies, this paper presents examples of the University of Salamanca (Spain) and Gazi University (Turkey). The use of technological tools for the teaching and learning of Calculus or Algebra has allowed a change in the objectives and form of content-based teaching such as integral calculus, differential equations or linear algebra, where we have move from training in calculation strategies to reasoning processes for the application of those contents to engineering situations. However, these changes are not always visible in the assessment instruments that are used, therefore, it is considered necessary to go deeper into diverse assessment ways and instruments, that are valid in the different European countries, as proposed in the RULES_MATH project.

The main goal of this work is to propose a new framework to design a novel family of mathematical models to simulate malware spreading in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). An analysis of the proposed models in the scientific literature reveals that the great majority are global models based on systems of ordinary differential equations such that they do not consider the individual characteristics of the sensors and their local interactions. This is a major drawback when WSNs are considered. Taking into account the main characteristics of WSNs (elements and topologies of network, life cycle of the nodes, etc.) it is shown that individual-based models are more suitable for this purpose than global ones. The main features of this new type of malware propagation models for WSNs are stated.

Malware infection in a wireless sensor network (WSN) can represent a potential vulnerability due to the low level of security that these networks exhibit. Consequently, it is very important to study the behavior of the propagation of malware in a WSN. This work aims to design a novel agent-based model to simulate malware spreading. It will provide an efficient software of great help for security administrators.

Advanced persistent threats (APTs) are the new type of cyber attacks that have drastically change the information security landscape. They seek to gather very sensitive information from specific and high-level objectives. The great majority of security tools do not allow handling such an intrusion in a proper way. Consequently, this study aims to analyze its behavior in order to design an agent-based model to simulate the APT cycle of life.
