In this paper, we present the modeling and experimental validation of an efficient, compact, and high-isolation waveguide duplexer operating at 225 GHz. While duplexers based on ferrite circulators are key components of many monostatic radar systems, at W-band frequencies and above the performance of waveguide circulators rapidly deteriorates. The design presented here uses a ferrite-free duplexing concept based on transmitting and receiving in orthogonal circular polarizations. The circular polarization is efficiently generated in waveguide using a septum orthomode transducer polarizer, leading to a compact device with a single horn antenna. The complete duplexer is designed using efficient numerical algorithms, resulting in a fabricated device with a measured 10% fractional bandwidth, a return loss better than 20 dB, isolation of 30 dB, and insertion loss below 1 dB.

A new physical realization of an elliptic function filter response is proposed for achieving compact size, wide bandwidth, wide spurious free stopband and high-selectivity performance. The filter configuration can be implemented in conventional waveguide technology or embedded in a multilayer low-temperature co-fired ceramic structure for integration with other circuitry in a chip module. The filter is analyzed using rigorous mode matching. To validate the concept, prototypes of four- and six-cavity elliptic filters are designed following a systematic procedure. Approximate synthesis is used to obtain initial dimensions of the filter and the desired optimum response is obtained by means of a final full-wave optimization. The results are verified with other numerical methods and with the measurements of a fourth-order waveguide filter.

Novel combline resonators and filters with enhanced dual-band characteristics are introduced in this paper. The proposed resonator is made up of three metallic conductors: an inner post, an intermediate conductor, and an enclosure. This structure provides two asynchronous resonant modes that can be used for realizing compact microwave dual-band filters. Such dual-band filters offer the low cost, compact size, and ease of manufacturing features of traditional combline resonator filters, with additional size reduction due to the fact that a single physical cavity provides two electrical resonators. In addition, the new cavity introduces a transmission zero in the guard-bands enhancing the filter selectivity, while keeping a simple and compact inline topology. The design of filters based on this novel resonator is discussed, starting with the resonator circuit model, the coupling scheme, and the complete filter design methodology. Simulations as well as experimental results of a tenth-order (2 × 5) dual-band filter with a measured rejection level in excess of 100 dB in the guard-band are presented to show the concept.

In this letter, several bandpass filters operating in the WR-1.5 band (500 to 750 GHz) are presented. The deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) silicon micromachining process is used for the fabrication of the filters. Two canonical filter topologies based on E- and H-plane are implemented. The work presented here has two specific objectives: a) to get important fabrication process parameters, such as tolerances, vertical angles, surface roughness, and repeatability and b) to validate the proper working of the waveguide filters in the terahertz band. These filters do not have any tuning element. Experimental results show better than 10 dB return loss and approximately 1 and 2.5 dB insertion loss (for 6% fractional bandwidth) for the E- and H-plane topology, respectively. The obtained results are in agreement with fabrication tolerances of 2 μm and vertical angles deviations up to 3°.

Waveguide antenna feeders with reconfigurable circular polarization sense are proposed in this paper. They can be switched between right and left hand circular polarization, without any mechanical rotation between the feeder and the antenna. Two types of feeders are presented. The polarizer works with a single switchable polarization for each state. The dual feeder can work with both polarizations at the same frequency band simultaneously, each one associated with a different rectangular waveguide port. The polarization sense is controlled by metallic posts that block or open the signal paths connecting the rectangular ports with a septum-orthomode polarizer. These posts are automated with piezo-motors integrated in the structure, leading to a very compact layout, reduced size, and practical for applications with diverse switching speed. The proof of concept and the automation are shown with experimental Ku-band prototypes.

An analytical procedure is presented for the synthesis of generalized multi-band filters. The procedure is applicable to both symmetric and asymmetric frequency responses and effective for any number of passbands and stopbands. An optimum equal-ripple performance is obtained in each passband and stopband. Prescribed real or complex transmission zeros can also be employed in the multi-band filtering function.
