My research has mainly focused on improving water treatment technologies, especially those based on biological processes. I’ve worked with a range of biological methods, such as microalgae systems, activated sludge, and biofilms, to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of wastewater treatment. Alongside these biological approaches, I’ve also explored the use of membrane filtration and electrochemical and sonochemical processes for tackling persistent pollutants, such as PFAS, in complex environmental settings.
Another key area of my work involves investigating emerging contaminants and their potential environmental risks. I’ve been particularly interested in how we detect and understand micro- and nanoplastics. Recently, I’ve applied advanced Raman imaging techniques to better characterise these particles and gain insights into their behaviour and interactions in environmental systems.
