This empirical study analyses the effects of institutional, economic, and socio-economic determinants on total entrepreneurial activity in the contexts of developed and developing countries. It fills a gap in the literature, regarding the lack of empirical studies about the relationships among entrepreneurial activity, corruption, commercial freedom, economic growth, innovativeness, inward foreign direct investment, unemployment, households, and non-profit institutions serving households (NPISHs)’ final consumption expenditure, age dependency ratio, education index, and life expectancy at birth. The empirical application uses annual panel data for the 2003–2018 period, with a total sample of 21 countries, analysed in a two-stage empirical application, including preliminary analysis and a quantile regression model. New empirical evidence is provided, revealing a significantly positive role played by commercial freedom, innovativeness, inward foreign direct investment, households, and NPISHs’ final consumption expenditure and education on entrepreneurial activity. Corruption, unemployment, age dependency ratio, and life expectancy at birth have a significantly negative influence on entrepreneurial activity. In terms of implications, greater government control is recommended, in order to foster the quality of nations’ institutional environment. Additionally, suggested is the launch of new incentives to stimulate research and development activities aimed at registering international patents with a global impact, sourced from new ventures and transnational collaboration.

This study is focused on assessing the effects of burnout as a moderator of the relationship between employees’ quality of work life (QWL) and their perceptions of their contribution to the organization’s productivity by integrating the QWL factors into the trichotomy of (de)motivators of productivity in the workplace. The empirical findings resulting from an OLS multiple regression, with interaction terms, applied to a survey administered at 514 employees in 6 European countries, point out two important insights: (i) QWL hygiene factors (e.g., safe work environment and occupational healthcare) positively and significantly influence the contribution to productivity; and (ii) burnout de-motivator factors (that is, low effectiveness, cynicism, and emotional exhaustion) significantly moderate the relationship between QWL and the contribution to productivity. Combining burnout with other QWL components, such as occupational health, safe work, and appropriate salary, new insights are provided concerning the restricting (i.e., low effectiveness and cynicism) and catalyzing (emotional exhaustion) burnout components of contribution to productivity. These findings are particularly relevant given the increased weight of burnout, mental disorders and absenteeism in the labor market, affecting individuals’ quality of life and organizations’ performance and costs.

Values guide actions and judgements, form the basis of attitudinal and behavioral processes, and have an impact on leaders’ decision-making, contributing to more sustainable performance. Through a bibliometric study and content analysis, 2038 articles were selected from Scopus, from the period 1994–2021, presenting global research tendencies on the subject of values, public administration, and sustainability. The results indicate that Sustainability is the most productive journal, the main research category is in social sciences, the most productive institution is the University of Queensland, the location with the most publications and research collaborations is the USA, and the authors with the greatest number of articles are Chung, from Chung-Ang University; García-Sánchez, from the University of Salamanca; and Pérez, from the University of Cantabria. Analysis of keywords shows that the most relevant are “sustainability”, “CSR”, “sustainable development”, “innovation”, and “leadership”. Time analysis of keywords reveals a tendency for lines of research in the social and work area. The results also provide data about the framing of studies in sustainability pillars and the types of values referred to and indicate the main areas of public administration studied. Finally, a future research agenda is proposed.

Recent oil price developments contribute to renewed interest in the subject of oil shocks regarding international stock market performance. In this connection, this study uses a structural VAR (SVAR) model to evaluate the impact of BRENT and WTI crude oil price effects on the Dow Jones, DAX, CAC, ATHENS Composite, and PSI20 performance. The dynamic analysis gives support to the nonsignificant effects of oil prices on the US and Eurozone markets. Nevertheless, in the context of stock markets, the findings suggest that Dow Jones becomes the prevailing market-driver of Eurozone market performance. Furthermore, there is only a unidirectional, significant relationship in Eurozone stock markets, from the CAC to the PSI20. The outstanding role of the US stock market reflects the fact of this being the world’s largest economy in addition to being closely linked to other economies worldwide. The impact of the French stock market on the Portuguese stock market is justified by the integration of both stock markets in the Euronext Stock Exchange.

This study analyzes the relationships and dynamics between material production, foreign direct investment (FDI), economic activity, carbon productivity, the stock market, and green tech, both in a global and European context, using panel vector autoregressive methodology (PVAR). The empirical evidence obtained for the Global Group reveals four significant and positive unidirectional causality relationships, where aggregate material production is the prominent variable. For the EU-15 group, six significant causality relationships were detected, among them three negative and three positive unidirectional relationships. The stock markets shock reveals to be the most dominant variable, despite FDI standing out as causing the greatest shock effect. Nevertheless, in the European context, limited evidence of dematerialization is detected. Economic recessions show a generally negative effect, which contrasts with the economic Kitchin cycles, which reveal the effect of a generally positive relationship.

This study assesses the non‐linear effects of green bonds, conventional bonds and energy commodities on the behaviour of the cap‐and‐trade European Union carbon market (European Union Emissions Trading System [EU‐ETS]). By estimating four models, using Markov‐switching (MS) econometric methodology, non‐linearities are confirmed in dynamic behaviours, observing in the global calculation a positive effect of green bonds (S&P Green and Sol Green) on the carbon market, in regimes of both high and low volatility, whereas conventional bonds (S&P Agg) and energy commodities (DJCI En) contribute to a decrease in the carbon market in regimes of high volatility. The relevance of green bonds is underlined in determining the behaviour of the carbon market, besides observing greater persistence of the low volatility regime. These results allow both investors and fund managers to implement strategies in different volatility or economic activity contexts through a diversified portfolio and green/climate structure.

This study assesses the efficiency of higher education institutions (HEIs), considering the social, environmental and cultural factors (pro-sustainability), and at the same time examines how this efficiency can influence regional quality of life (QoL). The study adopts a two-step methodology. In the first step, the standard Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to estimate the efficiency scores of 23 Portuguese public HEIs; and in the second step, a multivariate logit regression is performed to assess the role played by the HEIs’ pro-sustainability efficiency in regional QoL. The main findings reveal that the HEIs located in the Greater Lisbon area have a higher pro-sustainability efficiency, but that efficiency is more significant regarding social factors. Concerning the contribution of pro-sustainability efficiency to the region’s QoL, this is significant for all the components, with the environmental and cultural aspects contributing positively to this significance.

Generating innovation with environmental impact is crucial for firms to achieve sustainable eco-innovative performance. In the reference literature on open innovation, gaps still persist at the level of scarce and limited knowledge on the use of knowledge sources and flows, for the purpose of strengthening the eco-innovative performance of the bioeconomy sector. To address these caveats, this study analyses the effects of open innovation on eco-innovation, based on inbound and outbound support practices. Specifically, it aims to analyse the effects of these practices on the eco-innovative performance of bioeconomy and non-bioeconomy firms, using secondary data gathered from the Community Innovation Survey—CIS 2010 for a sample of moderately innovative countries, namely Slovakia, Spain, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and the Czech Republic. The conceptual model proposed is tested using multivariate tobit regression models, in order to ensure the accuracy and reliability required to validate empirical tests. Overall, the empirical evidence allows the conclusion that inbound and outbound practices and public policies have a positive and significant influence on the eco-innovative performance of the firms studied. The contribution provided is two-fold: (i) in theoretical terms, an operational model of open innovation inbound and outbound practices is extended, crossing financial flows and innovation directions; and (ii) in empirical terms, new light is shed on the still limited knowledge about the positive and significant effects of open innovation outbound practices on the eco-innovative performance of companies belonging to a global strategic sector—that is, the bioeconomy sector, which has renewed strategic importance in the face of global climate change.

This study explores the contributions of different dimensions of the intellectual capital of higher education institutions (ICHEIs) to their performance, incorporating the previously unexplored dimension of quality of life (QoL) as a performance measure, and correspondingly taking into account the connection between the Theory of Stakeholders and the Theory of Legitimacy. Applying a Structural Equation Model and the Partial Least Squares method, we present new empirical findings from a sample of 738 students and 587 lecturers/researchers from seven Portuguese public HEIs. The ICHEIs positively influence the institution’s performance, through relational capital and structural capital; and QoL emerges as an important dimension of HEIs’ performance standards, especially regarding students’ perception of academic QoL. When HEIs understand and measure their IC, they will gain a better understanding of their core competencies, enabling a better allocation of resources and implementation of more effective strategic and operational actions.

This study analyzes the productive structure of Portugal in the period 2013–2017, using indicators of localization and specialization applied to 308 Portuguese local authorities. From an empirical approach using a threshold model, the following indicators are used: (i) localization quotient; (ii) specialization coefficient; (iii) Theil entropy index; (iv) rate of industrialization; and (v) the density of establishments by business size. The selected period 2013–2017 is due to the available data concerning firms located per local authority, and the choice of threshold model is justified through the possibility of assessing the non-linear effects of specialization and diversification on productivity, considering, in simultaneous terms, different regimes per business size. Estimation of the threshold model identified a positive, statistically significant relation between industrialization and productivity. Similarly, the terms of interaction between exports and diversification, and between the former and higher education institutions, shows a catalyzing effect of productivity. In addition, the most specialized micro-firms affect productivity significantly and positively, while the least specialized have the opposite effect. Small, less specialized companies have a significant and negative effect on productivity, contrasting with less specialized, medium-sized companies, which affect productivity positively. For large firms, the impact on productivity is negative for both high and low levels of specialization, reinforcing the need to fill existing gaps in strategic diversification, as well as the vertical and horizontal integration of the activities of production chains with high value added.

High-growth firms are of particular interest for academics and policymakers due to their serious contributions to the economy, job market, and knowledge creation. Previous studies have majorly focused on firm growth rates, their persistence over time, and their determinants. Nevertheless, open research windows still remain in predicting what sort of companies will grow or even survive and in understanding the inconsistency of high-growth levels. The complexity of the relationship macroeconomic environment, high-growth regimes and firm capabilities deserves further research efforts. Here we will focus on the microeconomic determinants of startups’ survival, namely, the founder’s attributes and the firm’ characteristics and capabilities, and their relation with business survival, contrasting gazelle and non-gazelle startups. To address this, we use a Cox proportional hazard model, for a sample of 4919 firms, collected from the Kauffman Foundation Survey. Results reveal that the main entrepreneur and entrepreneurial-level determinants of firm survival are the founders’ college education, IP activity, firms’ small- and medium-size, and the gazelle condition impact on the firms’ chances of survival. Taken these all together and including the moderating effect of startup capitalization, results point to the fact that owners’ work experience and the small- and medium-sized companies as well as the companies’ R&D activities moderated by capitalization access increases the chances of firm survival. Crisis spurs firms’ exit, nonetheless startups pursuing a competitive advantage strategy and the moderating effect of startup capital on their internal R&D activities increase the chances of survival.

This study highlights the importance of the CEO’s entrepreneurial profile, unveiling its importance for the survival and internationalisation of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the wine sector in the Portuguese region of Ribatejo. Evidence shows that CEOs, as individuals with a global mentality, are extremely alert and always ready to seek international opportunities to obtain additional benefits. To do so, they have to overcome different barriers in the course of the internationalisation process, determining the decision-making mechanisms that involve different modes of entry into new markets, always bearing in mind the sources of competitive advantage, in order to ensure greater financial sustainability and responsible profit sharing in the future. The empirical approach makes use of a qualitative methodology, based on interviews with the CEOs of two wine companies located in the Portuguese region of Ribatejo. This study provides important implications for strategic business process management aimed at overcoming obstacles to the internationalisation of wine-growing SMEs, through the choice of adequate entry modes.

This chapter introduces the positioning of the need to advance and gather new contributions that give an effective extension to the so-called Behavioural Theory of the Firm, which requires the incorporation of new analysis lenses that value the economic irrationality associated with management with emotions, values and family principles of the company. The company’s assets are not only a sum of tangible and intangible values, as they result from the history, work, competences, innovations relationships, unions and disunities of people, as a dynamic support of the evolutionary human capital of organizations.

The personal characteristics of the members, the organizational relationships, and the internal procedures need to be managed. Knowledge needs to be acquired, assimilated, transformed, and applied to create organizational value. Then, the relationship between intellectual capital and the absorptive capacity are fundamental. Family businesses, those governed and/or managed by members of the same family throughout the generations, represent more than half of the existing organizations, reaching figures close to 90% in some locations. There is a gap in the research about intellectual capital and the absorptive capacity of a family business; thus it must be explored deeply. The objective of this essay is to relate the previous evidence about the intellectual capital and the absorptive capacity of family businesses for innovative performance, identify previous results and the gap in the literature, present a conceptual model, and propose an agenda for future research. This essay was developed through a literature review. Then, this study contributes to original insights on the role of intellectual capital and absorption capacity in the innovative performance of family businesses.

This chapter contributes to the literature on entrepreneurship and small business management by testing the relationship between the non-economic organizational performance and the individual entrepreneurship capacity and by providing new insights about the need for promoting a truly cognitive entrepreneur. Toward the use of individual data relative to the founder or owner of SMEs, we assess the relationships between the non-economic performance of Portuguese SMEs and three types of capital: human, social, and organizational. It uses collaborators’ satisfaction as a metrics for non-economic performance and provides new insights for improving SMEs’ performance. The results provided the identification of four principal factors, which include all the types of individual capital considered in the analysis. The estimation of logistic regressions points out that only two factors present significant influences on the non-economic performance of SMEs. On the one hand, in terms of the factor 3, although it is capable of influencing negatively, in global terms, the non-economic performance of SMEs, it can be enhanced that interdepartmental meetings have a significant and positive influence on non-economic performance of SMEs. On the other hand, the analysis of the factor 4 reveals equally a global negative influence, although the human capital and cognitive variables that represent the entrepreneur’s intuition and competences of human resources are capable of influencing positively the behavior of the answer variable concerning non-economic performance of SMEs.

Corporate governance (CG), initially associated with private organizations, has been adopted by higher education institutions (HEIs). These are being managed more as firms in this post-standardization phase, in which the commercialization of higher education, competition and selective choice, finite resources and sustainable development (SD) have become major requirements for accountability and action. Principles of CG can collaborate and guide the process of making universities sustainable. The chapter analyses the effects of CG on the creation of a culture of sustainability in universities. In doing so, it analyzes the websites of public HEIs in EU-15 countries for a set of social responsibility indicators and investigates the impact and practices of two young Portuguese universities regarding United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. The results point out that CG and SD principles tend to guide the strategy of most public HEIs in the EU-15, confirming that they have made a commitment to good governance and sustainability.

Purpose This study aims to identify stakeholders’ perceptions of the effects associated with different components of intellectual capital (IC) on the sustainable development (SD) practices of higher education institutions (HEIs). Design/methodology/approach The empirical approach uses a structural equation model to provide new empirical findings in relation to 738 students and 587 lecturers/researchers at seven Portuguese state HEIs through quantitative research. Findings The results obtained are, firstly, important contributions to the literature on the IC and SD practices of HEIs, as a relationship between these two constructs is confirmed, especially through relational capital (RC) and structural capital (SC). Secondly, the stakeholders considered show different perceptions of the influence of the components of HEIs’ IC on these institutions’ SD practices, and thirdly, perception of the economic dimension is most influenced. Practical implications The empirical findings indicate the need to provide better information about HEIs’ policies and practices of SD and how the latter contribute to the SD of the institution and its region of influence. Originality/value No previous studies investigate students and teachers/researchers’ perceptions of the social, environmental, economic and organizational dimensions of SD in HEIs and at the same time how those perceptions can be influenced by the components of IC (e.g. human capital, SC, RC) in that institution.
