Dementia is a progressive, degenerative disorder characterized by cognitive and functional impairment. The behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), otherwise known as the neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia, represent a spectrum of noncognitive disturbances.
1 These disturbances can include aggression, agitation, delusion, hallucination, anxiety, psychosis, depression, sleep or appetite changes, and apathy.
2 More than 90% of patients with dementia develop at least 1 of these symptoms during the course of their disease.
3,4 Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia decrease the quality of life of patients with dementia and increase their chances of being institutionalized.
