Dr Squires is an Australian - a former professor in the University of Adelaide and is an internationally recognized dryland management expert. He has worked in many developing countries e.g. China, Mongolia, and in Central Asia. He also has publications, including 20 books, on grasslands, dryland farming, ecological restoration, and grazing management. He has been recognized by State Council in China and awarded Gold Medals for International Science and Technology Cooperation (2008) and a Friendship (YouYi) award (2011).The Society of Range Management USA) awarded Dr Squires an OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD. In October 2018 Dr Squires received the prestigious Award for International Science and Technology Cooperation from the Chinese Academy of Forestry and in December he received an Honorary Doctorate from Gansu Agricultural University, Lanzhou

Gold Medal for International Science and Technology Cooperation awarded by the government of China

For recognition of "the contribution made to better understanding of the underlying causes of land degradation and desertification in China's vast north-west regions and for strengthening cooperation between Chinese and foreign scientists and desert specialists." The award is a testament to Dr Squires’ outstanding contribution to the relationship between Australia and China. He has been involved in China since 1985.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

As a CSIRO scientist and later at the University of Adelaide and became a respected international authority on this subject. Over his career, he expanded his interest and he has worked on inventory, monitoring, and remote sensing; desertification and rangeland restoration; global climate change and carbon sequestration; sustainable agricultural development; and natural resources and agriculture policy. He has published as principal or co-author / editor approximately 169 papers, 17 books.
