Condition monitoring of the wind turbine based on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data has attracted much attention in recent years. Nevertheless, there are some inherent challenges in SCADA data analysis, including the low sampling rate, time-varying working conditions of the wind turbine, and a lack of historical fault data. To solve these problems, this article develops a novel condition monitoring and fault isolation system. First, a covariate-adjusted preprocessing procedure is proposed to account for the various working conditions of the wind turbine. Next, we construct a global monitoring statistic based on all temperature variables contained in the SCADA data, with a view to monitoring the overall health status of the wind turbine. If an alarm is raised, we isolate the fault through a variable selection method without relying on expert knowledge or historical fault data. Simulation and real cases are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of this system.

The bearing fault diagnosis is of vital significance in maintaining the safety of rotation machine. Among various fault detection techniques, the diagnosis based on vibration signal is widely applied in monitoring the condition of rotation machine. Variational mode decomposition (VMD) is a novel signal analysis method, which can decompose a multi-component signal into a certain number of band-limited intrinsic mode functions (BLIMFs) nonrecursively. VMD could overcome some problems such as mode mixing, the inference of noise, the determination of wavelet base, which exist in empirical mode decomposition, ensemble empirical mode decomposition, wavelet transform, respectively. However, the empirical selection of the parameters for VMD would affect the result of the decomposition. This paper presents an adaptive VMD method with parameter optimization for detecting the localized faults of rolling bearing. Kurtosis, sensitive to transient impulsive components, is employed as optimization index to evaluate the performance of the VMD. Two parameters in the VMD, namely the number of decomposition modes and data-fidelity constraint, are optimized synchronously based on the kurtosis index through artificial fish swarm algorithm. Executing VMD with the acquired parameters, the optimal BLIMF is obtained. The spectrum analysis of the optimal BLIMF could identify the characteristic frequency caused by the localized crack effectually. The validity of the proposed method is proved by means of a cyclic transient impulse response signal and two experiments with practical vibration signals of rolling bearings. Compared to several existing methods, the proposed method demonstrates reinforced results.

Capacity degradation of lithium-ion batteries largely determines the cost, performance and environmental impact of various products such as renewable energy production systems, portable electronics, and electric vehicles. Degradation assessment is thus of great importance for prognostic and health management of batteries, which ensures a stable production and operation. There are typically two leading sources contributing to the degradation of a lithium-ion battery, namely, cycling aging during charge/discharge cycles and calendar aging during idle states. However, most existing studies on degradation assessment either only consider a single source or ignore the coupling of these two sources, which makes the evaluation inefficient. A common observation in practice is that a battery tends to degrade faster when it experiences charge/discharge cycles continuously for a longer time. To capture this feature, this paper introduces the concept of the cumulative uninterrupted cycling duration (CUCD), which is defined as the consecutive operation duration since a battery ends the idle state. The CUCD can also help to model the coupling between the calendar and cycling aging. This paper then proposes to model the drift rate of cycling aging as a function of the CUCD and the functional form is determined with the monotonic spline. We estimate the model parameters by maximizing the likelihood function. Hypothesis testings toward the significance of the coupling between two aging sources and the monotonicity of the drift rate function under cycling aging are also provided. The effectiveness and the superiority of the model are validated using numerical and real case studies. Note to Practitioners —This study aims to characterize the degradation of lithium-ion battery simultaneously considering calendar and cycling agings and the coupling effect. Unlike previous research that only supplied experimental results to qualitatively illustrate the existence of the coupling effect between these two aging sources, this study provides procedures to quantitatively test the significance of such an effect. In addition, previous research ignored the coupling effect in the degradation modeling as it is difficult to capture, this study propose the concept of CUCD to characterize it. The CUCD is also introduced as a stress factor for cycling aging, which is based on the fact that a battery will degrade faster when it experiences charge/discharge cycle continuously for a longer time. Hypothesis testing is also provided to illustrate this monotonicity. To deal with another challenge that the expert knowledge of the functional form between cycling aging and CUCD is unavailable except for the monotonicity, a nonparametric method with the shape-restricted spline is adapted. The estimation procedures for the model parameters are also presented.

Acoustic tomography is a technique widely used in nonintrusive temperature measurement. The time of flight (TOF) of acoustic waves can be used to estimate the temperatures of a measurement area. After obtaining the TOF of some transmitter–receiver pairs, the temperature profile of the probed area can be estimated by some reconstruction algorithms. Temperature profiles play a critical role in the safe operation and efficient control of thermal-related mechanical systems. This article aims to present a systematic review of the acoustic reconstruction of the temperature profile, including TOF measurements and reconstruction algorithms. First, time-domain, Fourier-domain, and hybrid-domain methods for the TOF measurement are revisited and discussed. Second, algorithms for the solution of the reconstruction model are reviewed from three groups of regularization methods. We also discuss how to choose the regularization parameter and form a good preconditioner for fast calculation. Third, some extensions in TOF measurements and reconstruction methods and potential errors that may affect acoustic reconstruction are also discussed. Finally, some applications are presented. A framework for the whole reconstruction process can be a useful resource to help researchers select a proper method for specific applications.
