Water-Energy Nexus
Published: 01 December 2024 in Water-Energy Nexus

In response to escalating global energy demands and mounting environmental concerns, Microbial Fuel Cells have emerged as a groundbreaking technology, leveraging the unique abilities of microorganisms to harness bioenergy. This comprehensive review delves into the foundational principles governing MFCs, exploring mechanisms facilitating electron transfer and bioenergy generation while addressing factors influencing MFC performance. It further analyzes MFCs' multifaceted applications, from wastewater treatment to bioenergy recovery, and investigates their synergistic integration with other renewable energy systems. Despite these promising prospects, this review acknowledges the challenges of scalability, cost-effectiveness, and optimization, highlighting recent advancements aimed at enhancing efficiency, stability, and economic viability in MFC research. This review further offers a holistic perspective on the dynamic field of MFCs, assessing their potential to revolutionize bioenergy production while recognizing the hurdles to widespread adoption.

We discuss using the qualitative arts-based method of autophotography by sharing our experiences conducting three studies with postpartum women as they navigated the psychosocial challenges of physical activity (PA) engagement. In working with this population, we used autophotography in conjunction with feminist theory by centering participants’ voices, highlighting the presence of the gendered expectations of motherhood in PA engagement, and providing tools for transformation and empowerment. Throughout our paper, we reflect on the process of conducting autophotography in our studies with postpartum women and theorize how this method provided an important medium for mothers to share their voices and stories.

Project Goal: Differentiation of human iPSC lines into satellite-like cells and treatment with Wnt7a or EGF

Starting Date: 08 September 2020

Current Stage: We hypothesize that Wnt7a and EGF are important modulators of human satellite-like cell division dynamics and will increase satellite stem cell expansion and commitment to tissue regeneration, respectively. I will confirm this in a human in vitro model by using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) generated from healthy and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy patient cells which will be differentiated into satellite-like cells and treated with either Wnt7a, EGF, or a vehicle control
