Mortality prediction is critical in clinical care, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs), where early identification of high-risk patients can inform treatment decisions. While deep learning (DL) models have demonstrated significant potential in this task, most suffer from limited generalizability, which hinders their widespread clinical application. Additionally, the class imbalance in electronic health records (EHRs) complicates model training. This study aims to develop a causally-informed prediction model that incorporates underlying causal relationships to mitigate class imbalance, enabling more stable mortality predictions. This study introduces the CRISP model (Causal Relationship Informed Superior Prediction), which leverages native counterfactuals to augment the minority class and constructs patient representations by incorporating causal structures to enhance mortality prediction. Patient data were obtained from the public MIMIC-III and MIMIC-IV databases, as well as an additional dataset from the West China Hospital of Sichuan University (WCHSU). A total of 69,190 ICU cases were included, with 30,844 cases from MIMIC-III, 27,362 cases from MIMIC-IV, and 10,984 cases from WCHSU. The CRISP model demonstrated stable performance in mortality prediction across the 3 datasets, achieving AUROC (0.9042-0.9480) and AUPRC (0.4771-0.7611). CRISP's data augmentation module showed predictive performance comparable to commonly used interpolation-based oversampling techniques. CRISP achieves better generalizability across different patient groups, compared to various baseline algorithms, thereby enhancing the practical application of DL in clinical decision support. Trial registration information for the WCHSU data is available on the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry website ( http://www.chictr.org.cn ), with the registration number ChiCTR1900025160. The recruitment period for the data was from August 5, 2019, to August 31, 2021.

Point cloud completion aims to recover a complete point shape from a partial point cloud. Although existing methods can form satisfactory point clouds in global completeness, they often lose the original geometry details and face the problem of geometric inconsistency between existing point clouds and reconstructed missing parts. To tackle this problem, we introduce SymmCompletion, a highly effective completion method based on symmetry guidance. Our method comprises two primary components: a Local Symmetry Transformation Network (LSTNet) and a Symmetry-Guidance Transformer (SGFormer). First, LSTNet efficiently estimates point-wise local symmetry transformation to transform key geometries of partial inputs into missing regions, thereby generating geometry-align partial-missing pairs and initial point clouds. Second, SGFormer leverages the geometric features of partial-missing pairs as the explicit symmetric guidance that can constrain the refinement process for initial point clouds. As a result, SGFormer can exploit provided priors to form high-fidelity and geometry-consistency final point clouds. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations on several benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art completion networks.

Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has become a significant public health issue, especially prevalent among adolescents. The complexity and multifactorial nature of NSSI necessitate a comprehensive understanding of its underlying causal factors. This research leverages the causal discovery methodology to explore these causal associations in children. Methods: An observational dataset was scrutinized using the causal discovery method, particularly employing the constraint-based approach. By integrating machine learning and causal inference techniques, the study aimed to determine direct causal relationships associated with NSSI. The robustness of the causal relationships was evaluated using three methods to construct and validate it: the PC (Peter and Clark) method, Fast Causal Inference (FCI) method, and the GAE (Graphical Autoencoder) method. Results: Analysis identified nine nodes with direct causal relationships to NSSI, including life satisfaction, depression, family dysfunction, sugary beverage consumption, PYD (positive youth development), internet addiction, COVID-19 related PTSD, academic anxiety, and sleep duration. Four principal causal pathways were identified, highlighting the roles of lockdown-induced lifestyle changes, screen time, positive adolescent development, and family dynamics in influencing NSSI risk. Conclusions: An in-depth analysis of the factors leading to Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), highlighting the intricate connections among individual, family, and pandemic-related influences. The results, derived from computational causal analysis, underscore the critical need for targeted interventions that tackle these diverse causative factors.

Background: Although unplanned hospital readmission is an important indicator for monitoring the perioperative quality of hospital care, few published studies of hospital readmission have focused on surgical patient populations, especially in the elderly. We aimed to investigate if machine learning approaches can be used to predict postoperative unplanned 30-day hospital readmission in old surgical patients. Methods: We extracted demographic, comorbidity, laboratory, surgical, and medication data of elderly patients older than 65 who underwent surgeries under general anesthesia in West China Hospital, Sichuan University from July 2019 to February 2021. Different machine learning approaches were performed to evaluate whether unplanned 30-day hospital readmission can be predicted. Model performance was assessed using the following metrics: AUC, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. Calibration of predictions was performed using Brier Score. A feature ablation analysis was performed, and the change in AUC with the removal of each feature was then assessed to determine feature importance. Results: A total of 10,535 unique surgeries and 10,358 unique surgical elderly patients were included. The overall 30-day unplanned readmission rate was 3.36%. The AUCs of the six machine learning algorithms predicting postoperative 30-day unplanned readmission ranged from 0.6865 to 0.8654. The RF + XGBoost algorithm overall performed the best with an AUC of 0.8654 (95% CI, 0.8484–0.8824), accuracy of 0.9868 (95% CI, 0.9834–0.9902), precision of 0.3960 (95% CI, 0.3854–0.4066), recall of 0.3184 (95% CI, 0.259–0.3778), and F1 score of 0.4909 (95% CI, 0.3907–0.5911). The Brier scores of the six machine learning algorithms predicting postoperative 30-day unplanned readmission ranged from 0.3721 to 0.0464, with RF + XGBoost showing the best calibration capability. The most five important features of RF + XGBoost were operation duration, white blood cell count, BMI, total bilirubin concentration, and blood glucose concentration. Conclusion: Machine learning algorithms can accurately predict postoperative unplanned 30-day readmission in elderly surgical patients.
