The construction field currently suffers from low productivity, a lack of expertise among practitioners, weak innovation, and lack of predictability. The digital twin, an advanced digital technology, empowers the construction sector to advance towards intelligent construction and digital transformation. It ultimately aims for highly accurate digital simulation to achieve comprehensive optimization of all phases of a construction project. Currently, the process of digital twin applications is facing challenges such as poor data quality, the inability to harmonize types that are difficult to integrate, and insufficient data security. Further research on the application of digital twins in the construction domain is still needed to accelerate the development of digital twins and promote their practical application. This paper analyzes the commonly used architectures for digital twins in the construction domain in the literature and summarizes the commonly used technologies to implement the architectures, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, cyber–physical systems, internet of things, virtual reality, augmented reality applications, and considers their advantages and limitations. The focus of this paper is centered on the application of digital twins in the entire lifecycle of a construction project, which includes the design, construction, operation, maintenance, demolition and restoration phases. Digital twins are mainly moving towards the integration of data and information, model automation, intelligent system control, and data security and privacy. Digital twins present data management and integration challenges, privacy and security protection, technical manpower development, and transformation needs. Future research should address these challenges by improving data quality, developing robust integration methodologies, and strengthening data security measures.

Bridges might experience many defects during use, such as pavement cracks and reinforcement corrosion, which easily produce an accumulated impact that threatens bridge safety. Thus, there is a need for the regular inspection and maintenance of bridges. This paper presents a bridge maintenance system (BMS) based on building information modelling (BIM), which is utilized in bridge defect information management using a digitalization method. A bridge defect three-dimensional BIM (BIM3D) library is established and combined with a bridge model to visualize bridge defect conditions. Based on bridge inspection data, bridge defect information is digitally classified and encoded according to the international framework for dictionaries (IFD) standard and used to establish a database. An evaluation of bridge technical conditions is performed, and the results are graded and displayed in different colours, reflecting the visualization function of BIM technology. Maintenance suggestions are provided according to the range of bridge technical condition scores, reflecting the informatization function of BIM technology. With the Xinjiang Cocodala Bridge in China as a case study, a bridge BIM3D model and inspection data are imported into the BMS to utilize the functions of ‘visualization of bridge defect conditions’, ‘evaluation of bridge technical conditions’ and ‘recommendations of bridge maintenance methods'.

The traditional blue brick was the dominant clay brick used in Chinese architecture before the mid-nineteenth century. The ancient city of Ping Yao, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) heritage site, is an outstanding example of blue brick architecture. The Ping Yao bricks within the damp areas (up to 4 m at highest) of the ancient city's walls and private houses are subjected to various weathering, including contour scaling, flaking, powdering and salt crystallization. This study aims to characterize the properties, analyse weathering mechanisms, determine the main weathering factors and discuss the anti-weathering strategies of blue bricks. To do so, samples of brick and salt efflorescence were collected from the historical buildings of Ping Yao and were studied with regard to their mineralogical and physico-mechanical (e.g. density, porosity, pore size distribution, water absorption and uniaxial compressive strength) properties. The resistance to salt crystallization and frost, and the maximum firing temperatures of the brick samples were determined in the laboratory. Weathering mechanisms and anti-weathering strategies were discussed. Salt crystallization and freeze–thaw cycles were found to be two important factors that lead to brick weathering. An anti-weathering strategy of ‘damp blocking, desalination and brick replacing’ was discussed based on the laboratory experiments, suggestions in literature and site conditions.

Building information modeling (BIM) is an emerging technology that can effectively solve the problems of information dispersion, complex personnel management, and lack of construction supervision, which often occur during the construction of tunnel engineering. Taking the construction of Haicang Tunnel in Xiamen, China as a case study, the utilization of BIM technology in the design stage, the construction simulation and operation are demonstrated during the full-life cycle of the project. During the construction of Haicang Tunnel, the technologies of BIM 3D, BIM 4D, BIM 5D, and Cloud Platform are used to make the construction process controllable and to facilitate the implementation and deployment of construction plans. BIM 3D is a visualization method to show the detailed model in the construction. The design is optimized by the navigation collision function of BIM 3D. BIM 4D adds the time schedule into BIM 3D model to show the construction schedule. BIM 5D adds the cost into BIM 4D model to show the construction consumption. The methods of BIM 4D and BIM 5D can assist the engineering management in allocating resources and funds in the project. Cloud Platform is used to effectively implement information management.
