Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be used to serve as aerial Base Stations (BSs) to enhance both the coverage and performance of communication networks in various scenarios, such as emergency communications and network access for remote areas. Mobile UAVs can establish communication links for ground users to deliver packets. However, UAVs have limited communication ranges and energy resources. Particularly, for a large region, they cannot cover the entire area all the time or keep flying for a long time. It is thus challenging to control a group of UAVs to achieve certain communication coverage in a long run, while preserving their connectivity and minimizing their energy consumption. Towards this end, we propose to leverage emerging Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) for UAV control, and present a novel and highly energy-efficient DRLbased method, which we call DRL-EC3 (DRL-based Energyefficient Control for Coverage and Connectivity). The proposed method 1) maximizes a novel energy efficiency function with joint consideration for communications coverage, fairness, energy consumption and connectivity, 2) learns the environment and its dynamics, and 3) makes decisions under the guidance of two powerful Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). We conduct extensive simulations for performance evaluation. Simulation results have shown that DRL-EC3 significantly and consistently outperform two commonly-used baseline methods in terms of coverage, fairness and energy consumption.

In this paper, we aim to design a fully-distributed control solution to navigate a group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as the mobile Base Stations (BSs) to fly around a target area, to provide long-term communication coverage for the ground mobile users. Different from existing solutions that mainly solve the problem from optimization perspectives, we proposed a decentralized deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based framework to control each UAV in a distributed manner. Our goal is to maximize the temporal average coverage score achieved by all UAVs in a task, maximize the geographical fairness of all considered point-of-interests (PoIs), and minimize the total energy consumptions, while keeping them connected and not flying out of the area border. We designed the state, observation, action space, and reward in an explicit manner, and model each UAV by deep neural networks (DNNs). We conducted extensive simulations and found the appropriate set of hyperparameters, including experience replay buffer size, number of neural units for two fully-connected hidden layers of actor, critic and their target networks, discount factor for remembering the future reward. The simulation results justified the superiority of the proposed model over the state-of-the-art DRL-EC3 approach based on deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), and three other baselines.

Domain adaptive semantic segmentation attempts to make satisfactory dense predictions on an unlabeled target domain by utilizing the supervised model trained on a labeled source domain. One popular solution is self-training, which retrains the model with pseudo labels on target instances. Plenty of approaches tend to alleviate noisy pseudo labels, however, they ignore the intrinsic connection of the training data, i.e., intra-class compactness and inter-class dispersion between pixel representations across and within domains. In consequence, they struggle to handle cross-domain semantic variations and fail to build a well-structured embedding space, leading to less discrimination and poor generalization. In this work, we propose Se mantic-Guided Pi xel Co ntrast (SePiCo) , a novel one-stage adaptation framework that highlights the semantic concepts of individual pixels to promote learning of class-discriminative and class-balanced pixel representations across domains, eventually boosting the performance of self-training methods. Specifically, to explore proper semantic concepts, we first investigate a centroid-aware pixel contrast that employs the category centroids of the entire source domain or a single source image to guide the learning of discriminative features. Considering the possible lack of category diversity in semantic concepts, we then blaze a trail of distributional perspective to involve a sufficient quantity of instances, namely distribution-aware pixel contrast , in which we approximate the true distribution of each semantic category from the statistics of labeled source data. Moreover, such an optimization objective can derive a closed-form upper bound by implicitly involving an infinite number of (dis)similar pairs, making it computationally efficient. Extensive experiments show that SePiCo not only helps stabilize training but also yields discriminative representations, making significant progress on both synthetic-to-real and daytime-to-nighttime adaptation scenarios. The code and models are available at https://github.com/BIT-DA/SePiCo

Mobile Crowdsourcing (MCS) is now an important source of information for smart cities, especially with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and driverless cars. They are equipped with different kinds of high-precision sensors, and can be scheduled/controlled completely during data collection, which will make MCS system more robust. However, they are limited to energy constraint, especially for long-term, long-distance sensing tasks, and cities are almost too crowded to set stationary charging station. Towards this end, in this paper we propose to leverage emerging Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) techniques for enabling model-free unmanned vehicles control, and present a novel and highly effective control framework, called "DRL-RVC". It utilizes the powerful Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for feature extraction of the necessary information (including sample distribution, traffic flow, and etc.), then makes decisions under the guidance of the Deep Q Network (DQN). That is, UAVs will cruise in the city without control and collect most required data in the sensing region, while mobile unmanned charging station will reach the charging point in the shortest possible time. Finally, we validate and evaluate the proposed framework via extensive simulations based on a real dataset in Rome. Extensive simulation results well justify the effectiveness and robustness of our approach.
