Maria Breygina studied at the Faculty of Biology, Lomonosov Moscow State University in Moscow, graduating with honors in 2007. In 2009, she defended her PhD thesis on "The Role of Transmembrane Anion Transport in Regulating Pollen Grain Germination in Angiosperms". She worked at the Department of Plant Physiology, first as a research fellow and later as a senior research fellow. In 2024, she defended her doctoral thesis on "Reactive Oxygen Species as Regulators of the Interaction between Male Gametophyte and Sporophyte in Seed Plants". Since 2025, she has been working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Physiology. Maria has successfully led several projects supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Russian Science Foundation. She heads a group of young scientists studying the physiological aspects of sexual reproduction in gymnosperms and angiosperms, focusing on the roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hormonal regulation during the progamic phase.
