Background: We explored the relationship between the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), the lactate dehydrogenase-albumin ratio (LDH/albumin ratio; LAR), the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, and the long-term survival of colon cancer patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical data and follow-up materials of 126 patients with colon cancer who underwent surgical treatment in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Jiangnan University Affiliated Hospital from June 2012 to December 2015. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to distinguish the high ratio group from the low ratio group. The Kaplan Meier method was used to draw the survival curve in our survival analysis. The log rank test was used for the univariate analysis and the Cox multivariate regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between preoperative PLR, PNI, LAR, conut scores, and overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS) of patients with colon cancer. Results: The median follow-up time was 72 months. The OS rates at 3 and 5 years were 83.3% and 78.5%, respectively. The PFS rates at 3 and 5 years were 79.3% and 77.6%, respectively. The 3-year and 5-year OS rates in the low LAR group (≤4.91) were 90.9% and 87.1%, respectively, and were 56.0% and 44.0% in the high LAR group (>4.91) respectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that the LAR value was correlated with OS and PFS (P < 0.05). Conclusion: A high preoperative LAR is an independent predictor of the prognosis of colon cancer patients.

Breast cancer has become the most common malignant tumor worldwide. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a type of breast cancer that is negative for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Compared with other molecular subtypes of breast cancer, TNBC is the most aggressive and highly heterogeneous. TNBC is insensitive to endocrine and anti-HER2 therapy, and chemotherapy is currently the main systemic treatment. With the continuous development of detection techniques and deepening research on TNBC molecular subtypes, drugs targeting immune checkpoints and different targets have emerged, such as atezolizumab, pembrolizumab, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors, trophoblast cell-surface antigen 2 (TROP-2), and antibody-drug conjugates. These therapies provide new hope for TNBC treatment. Based on the analysis and classification of TNBC, this article summarizes the immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and new treatment combinations, providing references for the precise treatment of TNBC in the future.
Seminal plasma is a complex mixture of secretions from various glands in the male genital tract. Compared to sperm cells, it contains important proteins that are both directly and indirectly associated with sperm motility. Here, we constructed quantitative proteomes of human seminal plasma from three normozoospermic and asthenozoospermic individuals. A total of 524 proteins were identified, and 366 of them were found to be quantified in all six samples. We first investigated the absolute expression features of these proteins and found that the variations of protein identification among different samples and other published datasets were mainly due to some lowly expressed proteins. By integration of various proteomic datasets and bioinformatics databases, we comprehensively annotated the biological functions, physiological originations, and disease associations of these proteins. We found that our dataset could benefit the studies of both male infertility and other male diseases. Finally, based on the relative expression values determined by chemical labeling, we identified a total of 29 differentially expressed proteins, which could be used as candidate targets for studying the molecular bases of sperm motility or developing precise diagnostic biomarkers of asthenozoospermia. We further successfully verified the expression trends of four representative proteins by Western blotting. Compared to a previous dataset based on label-free quantification, our results showed that most of the important proteins could be identified in the sample collected only once for each individual, providing the bases for personalized examination of seminal plasma proteins in clinic.
Introduction: Fear of disease progression (FoP) has been identified as one of the most prevalent unmet needs among breast cancer patients in recent years. The aim of this study was to examine FoP in patients with breast cancer and explore its associations with demographic and clinical characteristics, self-management efficacy, and family functioning. We also aimed to create a clinically-relevant prediction model based off of these factors (i.e., a “nomogram”) to help identify patients’ probability of experiencing high FoP.Methods: A cross-sectional survey of breast cancer in patients at the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University was conducted from June 2023 to February 2024. The study included the Demographic and Clinical Characteristics Questionnaire, the Fear of Disease Progression Scale (FoP-Q-SF), the Chinese Self-Management Efficacy Scale for Cancer Patients (C-SUPPH), and the Family Care Index Questionnaire (APGAR). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. A nomogram was constructed based on multiple regression results and the model performance was evaluated. Results: A total of 151 breast cancer patients were enrolled in the study. The mean (standard deviation) FoP score of the patients was 35.87 ± 9.24. The average score of C-SUPPH was 96.97 ± 17.29, and the average score of APGAR was 6.74 ± 2.98. Pearson correlation analysis showed that FoP was negatively correlated with self-management efficacy (r = −0.544, p < 0.01) and family functioning (r = −0.730, p < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis showed that age (B = −4.038), self-management efficacy (B = −0.085) and family functioning (B = −1.972) were significantly related to FoP, and together explained 36% of FoP variation (R2 = 0.360, F = 20.50, p < 0.001). The nomogram of these variables showed satisfactory prediction performance [the Bootstrap Correction Consistency Index (C-index) = 0.872]. According to previous studies, a C-index of >0.70 indicates that the model is acceptable. Conclusion: We found that greater fear of cancer progression (FoP) was associated with younger age, lower self-management efficacy and poorer family functioning in breast cancer patients. Based on these variables, our exploratory prediction model should be further investigated in order to help identify breast cancer patients who may be at highest risk of experiencing high FoP.
Over the years, obesity has become more commonplace and has had a substantial impact on several medical specialties, including reproductive medicine. The potential correlation between the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and infertility has yet to be determined. Women between the ages of 18 and 45 were included in this cross-sectional study, which was conducted as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2015 and 2020. Three tertiles were used to group VAI levels. Subgroup analysis and weighted binary logistic regression were employed to investigate the independent relationship between VAI and infertility. Smooth curve fitting was used to explore nonlinear relationships. This cross-sectional study followed the criteria of the STROBE guidelines. Of the 1231 participants, 127 were infertile women aged 18–45 years. A higher VAI was associated with a higher prevalence of infertility (OR = 1.22, 95% CI:1.03–1.45), which remained consistent across all subgroups (p > 0.05 for all interactions). We demonstrated a positive nonlinear association between VAI and infertility using a smooth curve fit. A higher visceral adiposity index level is positively correlated with a higher incidence of infertility among women in the United States. Women who are infertile can be identified using the visceral obesity index, and controlling visceral obesity may help lower the chances of becoming infertile.

Objective: The fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a generalized psychological problem among cancer patients and their spouses. The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status of cancer recurrence fear among breast cancer patients and their spouses, as well as its predictive factors. Methods: A total of 155 breast cancer patients and their partners between March 2022 to Feb 2023 were selected from Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University. The survey was investigated by fear of progression questionnaire-short form (FoP‑Q‑SF), fear of progression questionnaire‐short form for partners (FoP‐Q‐SF/P), family resilience questionnaire (FaRE), and health literacy management scale (HeLMS). Predictors were assessed using univariate and multivariable regression analyses. Results: 52.9% (n=82) of breast cancer patients and 51.6% (n=80) of their spouses experienced high levels of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR). There was a positive correlation between the FCR of the patients and their spouses, while family resilience and health literacy were statistically significant negative predictive factors for breast cancer patients’ fear of cancer recurrence. Conclusion: In summary, the study found that the partner’s FCR, health literacy and family resilience were closely related to the FCR in breast cancer patients. Therefore, healthcare workers can reduce the patient’s FCR by reducing the FCR in spouses, improving patients’ health literacy and family resilience in the future. In practical application, these findings hold significant implications for developing comprehensive care plans and interventions targeting FCR in breast cancer patients. By focusing on patients’ partners and providing appropriate support and resources, healthcare professionals can promote patients’ psychological well-being and overall health, leading to improved quality of life.
