Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of total quality management (TQM) practices on the work-related attitudes of International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs) staff, including job involvement, job satisfaction, career satisfaction and organisational commitment. Design/methodology/approach The paper developed and tested 16 hypotheses on the relationship between TQM practices and work-related attitudes. Out of 295 targeted staff working for 59 INGOs operating in Jordan, 126 staff have responded to the research questionnaire. The collected dataset has been analysed using the structural equation modelling-partial least square (SEM-PLS) technique. Findings Analysis of the data revealed the significant positive effect of TQM practices. Beneficiary focus, empowerment-teamwork and continuous improvement impact 35% of job involvement. Meanwhile, beneficiary focus and empowerment-teamwork affect 34 and 47% of career satisfaction and organisational commitment, respectively. Significantly, empowerment-teamwork and continuous improvement determine 62% of job satisfaction. However, the low extent of training and education is challenging to enhance employees' positive emotions. Practical implications This research provides further evidence on the importance of TQM practices to the leaders of INGOs. Therefore, to orient their resources towards TQM implementation to enhance work-related attitudes, and in turn, the performance of interventions in this challenging sector. Originality/value This research extends the knowledge regarding certain TQM practices that naturally and variably empower job and career satisfaction, job involvement, and organisational commitment within the INGOs. Therefore, to confirm the validity of this research direction in a new uncovered sector, which has its own specificities.

In light of higher education institutions (HEIs) need to implement intelligent, innovative systems for their digital strategic transformation to stay competitive, the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system can tailor solutions to such technological problems through its integration characteristic. The present study sheds light on the emergence of enablers and inhibitors, explaining technological readiness insight for ERP adoption. The study aims to understand better ERP readiness among HEIs to ease the substantial change required for the adoption process. The findings show a profound perception of ERP systems among 112 Egyptian HEIs, demonstrating that HEIs are technologically ready for adoption. Results reveal that HEIs have positive ERP readiness, although HEIs’ managers are still uncertain and expect some ERP inhibitors. Therefore, ERP adoption is principally contingent on perceiving enablers and eliminating any inhibitors comprising ERP technological readiness. This study delivers practical verification to the higher education context by advancing ERP concepts and characteristics from the HEIs’ perspective. This study, finally, suggests that ERP adoption is beneficial for HEIs

PurposeBesides small- and medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs) constraints, there is a lack of critical observations of the human capital model naturally inspiring themselves from within. Therefore this paper exposes the factors of emotional intelligence (EI) that make entrepreneurs gain sustainable competitiveness.Design/methodology/approachA data of self-administered survey from 397 SMEs in Malaysia was investigated using regression analysis.FindingsThe results reveal factors of EI comprised of self-confidence, self-innovation, self-inspiration and self-vision that have significant positive impacts on entrepreneurial performance. Amazingly, EI contributes almost 30% of the success, where self-vision and self-innovation are the robust EI to strengthen and sustain entrepreneurial performance. In contrast, self-confidence and self-inspiration are generic EI of human capital and easy to be applied by rivals.Research limitations/implicationsThe study provides a comparative benchmark model for SMEs, managers and entrepreneurs inspiring themselves from within that they can emulate and attain the same success. SMEs can obtain success by investing and culturing EI factors within themselves.Practical implicationsThe study provides a comparative benchmark model for SMEs and managers inspiring themselves from within and expands the theory of heterogeneous SMEs and the human capital to sustainable business and competitiveness. SMEs can obtain success through capitalizing human capital attributes within themselves.Originality/valueThe study is the first providing the viable model for SMEs or entrepreneurs leading themselves from within, to their action, behaviour, decision and achievement or the performance mechanism with a benchmark model of entrepreneur EI as a booster.

PurposeThis paper aims to formulate COVID-19 benchmarks that international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs) have considered to recover from the sudden stopping of operations swiftly and consequences of COVID-19 pandemic; thus, to move forward toward readiness for both, the unpredictable spreading or disappearing of the virus (case of INGOs operating in Jordan).Design/methodology/approachThis exploratory research has been informed by the broader social constructivism paradigm and the basics of grounded theory method to identify the common themes. Six semistructured interviews have been conducted with INGOs’ leaders. The findings have been categorized, triangulated and prioritized toward the final identification of benchmarks.FindingsSeven COVID-19 benchmarks for INGOs’ effective responses during COVID-19 pandemic have been proposed, comprising of (1) donors’ policies and regulations, (2) needs, expectations and relevancy, (3) coordination, (4) staff management, (5) business continuation plans, (6) balanced short-term and long-term planning and (7) permanent adoption of successful modalities.Social implicationsINGOs play a vital role in the lives of vulnerable people around the world through their international development and aid (IDA) projects. However, the restrictions of movements associated with COVID-19 pandemic drive more burden on these communities and interrupted their access to assistance and support. This paper helps to sustain the crucial support of INGOs to those people who need it.Originality/valueCOVID-19 pandemic has interrupted the implementation of IDA projects, which added further obstacles toward the achievement of quality implementation of these projects. The proposed COVID-19 benchmarks help INGOs to overcome the consequences of pandemic on the near longer-term alike.

The need to respond to the complexity of Project Management (PM) in International Development and Aid Projects (IDAPs) has been acknowledged. Nevertheless, there are minimal endeavors to customize the standard PM Models in enhancing IDAPs within the more immense structures and longer field‐specific agendas for the interest of people reached by this specific type of projects in the man‐made crises. This article aims to examine the standard PMBOK(R) Guide and align it with requirements of IDAPs by emphasizing the Total Quality Management and Core Humanitarian Standers. A critical review has provided a conceptual model for better management of IDAPs that are implemented in man‐made crises such as Syrian refugee crisis in the Middle East, which adds value to how the standard PMBOK(R) Guide might be adopted or adapted for IDAPs requirements and the interest of better organizational effectiveness of International Non‐Governmental Organizations and vulnerable people alike.

There is a gap in the extant literature on what corporate cultural attributes drives toward corporate sustainability performance. This study investigates corporate culture attributes that are conducive for sustainability and forms these attributes as a measurement tool for assessing corporate sustainability performance using linguistic preferences. Most of the prior assessment frameworks use composite attributes which cannot handle subjective perceptions, however, sustainability issues are multi-dimensional and requires subjective judgements and linguistic preferences. Additionally, corporate sustainability performance is highly dependent on cultural aspect. Therefore, this study forms a measurement structure using cultural attributes to evaluate corporate sustainability performance. This study integrates the fuzzy synthetic evaluation and a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) approach to address the interdependence relation among attributes in a hierarchical structure. The proposed framework is tested to show the reliability and validity. The proposed framework is able to identify over all sustainability performance as well as is able to draw specific managerial implications. The result reveals that overall corporate sustainability performance is low, and a poorer performance is found with regard to social responsibility. The study contributes in the literature by presenting a hierarchical assessment framework for understanding corporate sustainability performance.

In the era of “Industry 4.0”, knowledge resources are the most essential sources to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Yet, little empirical work exists to clarify how competitive advantage is attained through knowledge resources. Little or no research, so far, to understand how logistics service providers (LSPs) can obtain cost advantages through technology and knowledge resources. This study investigates the role of knowledge resources as a crucial factor in the relationship between technology resources and competitive advantage of LSPs. Survey data of 122 LSPs in Malaysia is used to analyse the proposed relationship. The results confirm that knowledge resources positively affect cost advantages and mediate, significantly, the relationship between technology resources and cost advantages, hence the first to justify theory-driven empirical evidence. LSPs have to appreciate high-level of both technology resources and knowledge resources to realise a firm’s cost advantages towards moving in the digital and technological evolution and development.

The paper examines firms’ value of technology and knowledge resource for winning the benefits of technologies and sustained competitive advantage by examining the cost advantages and the propositioned mediating effect of knowledge resource in Malaysian logistics firms. Partial least square analysis is performed on the survey of 122 logistics firms. The results verify that knowledge resource has a positive impact on cost advantages and mediate the technology resource-cost advantages relationship. The finding presents that technologies are valuable resources for competitive advantage but easy to be purchased and substituted; hence they serve as a temporary competitive advantage. Instead, knowledge resource is the catalyst of cost advantages and provokes the technology resource to give a greater impact on cost advantages. This study reveals that knowledge resource is too costly and difficult to be imitated, hence becomes the ultimate sources of sustained competitive advantage. Launching information logistics technology is sensitive and expensive; hence, logistics firms need to exploit more on knowledge resources, consolidate them with the relevant technology resources in order to obtain operational efficiency and effectiveness. This paper unveils the theoretical and empirical evidence for insightful understanding concerning the technology-knowledge resource-performance outcome relationship.

The contribution of this study is to apply a hybrid method to identify critical green supply chain practices (GSCP) based on importance and performance level under linguistic preferences. The leather industry in Bangladesh is facing acute pressure to minimize environmental pollution. Proper assessment of GSCP ensure effective implementation and thereby helping the industry face environmental challenges. However, there is lack of methods available for the assessment of GSCP concerning their importance and performance attributes under linguistic preferences. This study uses fuzzy set theory to handle fuzziness of human perceptions since the GSCP attributes usually expressed in linguistic preferences. Then, fuzzy importance and performance analysis (FIPA) approach was applied to identify GSCP importance and performance levels. Moreover, FIPA matrix was plotted to determine the critical GSCP as enablers of environmental performance enhancement. Additionally, a comprehensive measurement structure is also absent that requires the inclusion of supply chain partners as aspects. The objective is to assess GSCP based on importance and performance level. The study reveals that supplier and manufacturer viewpoints are the most critical aspects. Furthermore, designing for recycling water and minimizing waste during manufacturing, participation in an ISO 14001 environmental certification system, selection of suitable suppliers based on environmental criteria are the critical GSCP attributes. The managerial implications also are presented. The study presents certain limitations and thus proposes future studies.

Teleworking is enabled by technology which reflects an innovation capability of an organisation to gain sustainable competitive advantage. A major gap that exists in teleworking research literature today, is the absence of a theoretical framework that can be used to help firms understand the competitive advantage of a teleworking firm. This study attempts to bridge the gap by developing and proposing a framework which identifies factors that might have an impact on teleworking performance which in turn generates a firm's sustainable competitive advantage. The resource-based theory (RBT) suggests that the sustainability of competitive advantage is dependent on a firm's innovation capability. This study applies RBT to understand the competitive advantage of teleworking firms. The interview findings reveal that innovation capability is ascertained by tangible and intangible resources that are acquired and accessed by a teleworking firm.
