Transport planning and public health have been intertwined historically. The health impact of public transport services, such as social exclusion, is a widely discussed research topic. Social exclusion is a paramount concern for older adults’ health in the wake of emerging global challenges. However, there remains a significant research gap on how psychosocial barriers faced by older adults in using public transport services influence the social exclusion behavior. The present research provides empirical evidence and shows the impact of certain psychosocial barriers of public transportation on older adults’ social exclusion. A total of 243 Pakistani older adults (aged 60–89 years old) voluntarily participated in this cross-sectional study. The participants provided self-reports on their psychosocial barriers (including perceived norms, attitude, personal ability, habits, neighborhood social constraints, and intention) and the corresponding social exclusion. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized for the data analysis. The structural path model supported the significant associations between psychosocial barriers and social exclusion. Except for perceived descriptive norms, all other psychosocial barriers predicted older adults’ social exclusion. The research portrays the significance of the psychosocial factors to examine social exclusion and offers practical implications for urban and transport planners. The concerned policymakers can use the research findings to develop age-sensitive, socially sustainable, and healthy cities.

Mobility is a critical factor in promoting social sustainability. Previous studies have confirmed the critical psychological determinants that influence individual mobility. However, these studies rarely considered the relationships among different psychological factors of public transport users and social inclusion. The present study addresses this gap by examining the impact of three crucial psychosocial factors, namely, perceived social norms, perceived social support, and perceived neighborhood social environment on social inclusion. Moreover, we also investigated a mediating role of perceived accessibility among these psychosocial factors and social inclusion. Data was collected from a sample of 243 older women (aged 60 years and above) residing in Lahore, Pakistan, through face-to-face close-ended questionnaires. SPSS statistical software and SmartPLS were used for data analysis. The critical argument that develops from our investigations is that perceived social norms, social support, and neighborhood social environment are essential drivers of social inclusion. The results further reveal that addressing these psychosocial factors can enhance the perceived public transport accessibility and, thus, social inclusion among older women. This study provides useful findings for urban planning and transportation researchers to consider the psychosocial aspects of public transport users that could improve older women's social inclusion.

Transport can significantly contribute to independent and healthy ageing, but in Pakistan—as in various other countries across the globe—many older adults are dependent on others. Age-sensitive transport environments are crucial for generating positive experiences among older adults. Notably, psychosocial experiences significantly impact public transport use. Thus, a thorough understanding of these psychological influences on public transport accessibility can encourage walkability and independent mobility. In the present research, we combine different data into a mixed-method study to investigate the psychosocial barriers to public transport use by older adults for daily travel in Lahore, Pakistan. The data include a questionnaire survey (319 older adults), semi-structured interviews (11 older adults), structured interviews with four experts and an analysis of relevant national-, provincial-, and district-level strategies and transport plans. The findings show how poorly perceived social norms, negative emotional responses, and perceived difficulty are significant barriers to using public transport services among older adults. Moreover, the existing transport plans and documents do not favour and cater to such psychosocial issues. Several strategic interventions that could promote walkability and public transport use are suggested. It includes activating social norms, raising awareness and information, providing social support, improving walking infrastructure and public transport services, pricing mechanisms, and offering specialised services. These initiatives, however, necessitate coordination among government authorities at the national, provincial, and district levels.

Mobility generally refers to the ability or capacity to move. The subject of women’s mobility has been well documented and investigated by researchers since the 1970s. Early studies were initially inspired by the issue of gender-based violence encountered by women. At the same time, there is increasing research on women transportation mobility due to the increasing percentage of women working and travelling outside the house. However, there is an absence of studies that adopted a systematic review of studies related to women’s mobility. The increase of women working in the 21st century has led to an increase in the percentage of women travelling, thus engendering issues such as safety, security, mobility and accessibility. This paper attempted to identify studies related to women’s mobility in the 21st century from the year 2001 until the year of 2020 by using a systematic literature review, guided by Preferred Reporting Materials for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses, also known as the PRISMA Statement, to further understand the scenario of urban women travelling in the global context. This paper reviews previous studies conducted in the 21st century, revealing slight variations of focus among the authors on the urban women travelling issue.

The evolution of information technology has formed an information society whereby all activities can be reached by surfing through an online platform. Business organisations have also transformed virtually through which the physical absence of employees is less necessary. There are two types of gig works introduced, which are known as physical gig works (workers need to carry out tasks physically) or digital gig works (tasks will be conducted entirely through online platforms from beginning to end). These so-called gig works offer flexible work arrangements and a more family-friendly work environment that benefits married working women notably in achieving work-life balance. The present study would like to understand the motivational factors influencing women’s participation in physical gig works towards achieving work-life balance. A qualitative method was used whereby nine respondents for interviews were recruited through convenience sampling from the case study. The findings derived from the thematic analysis revealed that flexibility in time management and autonomy in managing the work schedule were recorded as the second highest factors after generating income. As a majority of the participants were single mothers, these factors (income and flexibility) should be the major concerns for future research on the enhancement of policies for an effective gig work system so that these women can have freedom in managing their work-life balance.

An essential element for promoting sustainable urban transport is active transportation. Many factors are associated with walkability, such as individual characteristics, sociodemography, and distance. This research presents findings on active transportation use relating to sociodemographic background. Using a questionnaire survey as an instrument, the study was performed in Bangsar and Shah Alam, Malaysia, via stratified random sampling. The binomial logistic regression model and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for statistically analyzing the data from 325 respondents. ANOVA demonstrated that education level and occupational status statistically influenced the home–public transportation station distance. The study outcomes could benefit many sectors, such as urban planning, transportation, health, and education. An enhanced understanding of the findings could contribute to decision-making among the relevant authorities for facilitating active transportation.
