Detecting outliers is a significant problem that has been studied in various research and application areas. Researchers continue to design robust schemes to provide solutions to detect outliers efficiently. In this survey, we present a comprehensive and organized review of the progress of outlier detection methods from 2000 to 2019. First, we offer the fundamental concepts of outlier detection and then categorize them into different techniques from diverse outlier detection techniques, such as distance-, clustering-, density-, ensemble-, and learning-based methods. In each category, we introduce some state-of-the-art outlier detection methods and further discuss them in detail in terms of their performance. Second, we delineate their pros, cons, and challenges to provide researchers with a concise overview of each technique and recommend solutions and possible research directions. This paper gives current progress of outlier detection techniques and provides a better understanding of the different outlier detection methods. The open research issues and challenges at the end will provide researchers with a clear path for the future of outlier detection methods.

Healthcare 4.0 is a recent e-health paradigm associated with the concept of Industry 4.0. It provides approaches to achieving precision medicine that delivers healthcare services based on the patient’s characteristics. Moreover, Healthcare 4.0 enables telemedicine, including telesurgery, early predictions, and diagnosis of diseases. This represents an important paradigm for modern societies, especially with the current situation of pandemics. The release of the fifth-generation cellular system (5G), the current advances in wearable device manufacturing, and the recent technologies, e.g., artificial intelligence (AI), edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), are the main drivers of evolutions of Healthcare 4.0 systems. To this end, this work considers introducing recent advances, trends, and requirements of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and Healthcare 4.0 systems. The ultimate requirements of such networks in the era of 5G and next-generation networks are discussed. Moreover, the design challenges and current research directions of these networks. The key enabling technologies of such systems, including AI and distributed edge computing, are discussed.

An electrocardiograph (ECG) is employed as a primary tool for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases (CVD). ECG signals provide a framework to probe the underlying properties and enhance the initial diagnosis obtained via traditional tools and patient-doctor dialogues. Notwithstanding its proven utility, deciphering large datasets to determine appropriate information remains a challenge in ECG-based CVD diagnosis and treatment. Our study presents a deep neural network (DNN) strategy to ameliorate the aforementioned difficulties. Our strategy consists of a learning stage where classification accuracy is improved via a robust feature extraction protocol. This is followed by using a genetic algorithm (GA) process to aggregate the best combination of feature extraction and classification. Comparison of the performance recorded for the proposed technique alongside state-of-the-art methods reported the area shows an increase of 0.94 and 0.953 in terms of average accuracy and F1 score, respectively. The outcomes suggest that the proposed model could serve as an analytic module to alert users and/or medical experts when anomalies are detected.

A multimodal biometric system integrates information from more than one biometric modality to improve the performance of each individual biometric system and make the system robust to spoof attacks. In this paper, we propose a secure multimodal biometric system that uses convolution neural network (CNN) and Q-Gaussian multi support vector machine (QG-MSVM) based on a different level fusion. We developed two authentication systems with two different level fusion algorithms: a feature level fusion and a decision level fusion. The feature extraction for individual modalities is performed using CNN. In this step, we selected two layers from CNN that achieved the highest accuracy, in which each layer is regarded as separated feature descriptors. After that, we combined them using the proposed internal fusion to generate the biometric templates. In the next step, we applied one of the cancelable biometric techniques to protect these templates and increase the security of the proposed system. In the authentication stage, we applied QG-MSVM as a classifier for authentication to improve the performance. Our systems were tested on several publicly available databases for ECG and fingerprint. Experimental results show that the proposed multimodal systems are efficient, robust and reliable than existing multimodal authentication systems.

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has emerged as a new computing paradigm with great potential to alleviate resource limitations attributed to mobile device users (MDUs) by offloading intensive computations to ubiquitous MEC server. However, most of the current offloading policies allow MDUs to transmit their tasks to the same connected small base stations (sBSs), which invariably increases latency and limits performance gain due to overload. Moreover, the security issue mitigating sensitive communication of information is not adequately addressed. Therefore, in this study, in addition to proposing a joint load balancing and computation offloading technique for MEC systems, we introduce a new security layer to circumvent potential security issues. First, a load balancing algorithm for efficient redistribution of MDUs among sBSs is proposed. In addition, a new advanced encryption standard (AES) cryptographic technique suffused with electrocardiogram (ECG) signal-based encryption and decryption key is presented as a security layer to safeguard the vulnerability of data during the transmission. Furthermore, an integrated model of load balancing, computation offloading and security is formulated as a problem whose goal is to decrease the time and energy demands of the system. Detailed experimental results prove that our model with and without the additional security layers can save about 68.2% and 72.4% of system consumption compared to the local execution.
