The water consumption of hotels varies greatly from one to another and can depend on many factors such as category, country, climate, size, hotel facilities (spas, swimming pools, gardens, kitchens, laundry, etc.), occupation, and so forth. Five-star hotels are responsible for large amounts of water consumption in the hotel industry, and this has an impact on water consumption in the Canary Islands. This study shows the evolution of water consumption for the period 2014–2019 in a five-star luxury hotel in Tenerife. Results show an average water consumption of 700 litres per guest and night, with minimums around 600 and maximums over 1000. The hotel has its own desalination plant and introduced water saving measures progressively over the last few years, achieving a very significant reduction in water consumption and energy costs. Water improvements improve the energy efficiency of the building, as well as having a positive impact on customers’ opinions.

Sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS), or urban green infrastructure for stormwater control, emerged for more sustainable management of runoff in cities and provide other benefits such as urban mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Research in Spain began a little over twenty years ago, which was later than in other European countries, and it began in a heterogeneous way, both in the SUDS typology and spatially within the peninsular geography. The main objective of this work has been to know through bibliographic review the state of the art of scientific research of these systems and their relationship with the different types of climates in the country. These structures have a complex and sensitive dependence on the climate, which in the Iberian Peninsula is mostly type B and C (according to the Köppen classification). This means little water availability for the vegetation of some SUDS, which can affect the performance of the technique. To date, for this work, research has focused mainly on green roofs, their capabilities as a sustainable construction tool, and the performance of different plant species used in these systems in arid climates. The next technique with the most real cases analyzed is permeable pavements in temperate climates, proving to be effective in reducing flows and runoff volumes. Other specific investigations have focused on the economic feasibility of installing rainwater harvesting systems for the laundry and the hydraulic performance of retention systems located specifically in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. On the contrary, few scientific articles have appeared that describe other SUDS with vegetation such as bioretention systems or green ditches, which are characteristic of sustainable cities, on which the weather can be a very limiting factor for their development.

The European Union has incorporated impact investment through two action plans: the Social Entrepreneurship Initiative and the Investment Plan for Europe. These financing tools seek to fund economic growth and promote job creation. Among the different measures carried out, the regulatory framework for impact investment funds stands out, under which the denomination, European Social Entrepreneurship Fund, is established to designate investment funds focused on social enterprises with the objective of generating a positive impact. It is possible to affirm that the creation of a solid impact intermediation infrastructure, by connecting both sides of supply and demand, is a critical aspect for the development and effective functioning of the impact market. Special importance is given to impact funds capable of attracting private capital. In order to categorise the different impact funds according to the most relevant aspects, a proposal form for the characterisation of impact funds has been drawn up and has been applied to a particular case. The presentation of Creas will allow for contextualising the practices that impact funds carry out and facilitate the general understanding of the article through a specific example that is considered successful in Spain.

The Canary Islands are a volcanic territory within Spain. It is a group of islands where radon gas concentrations in enclosed areas must be considered for the health of workers, as it is an archipelago where high concentrations of this gas are expected to be found (due to the richness in uranium and radium of the rocks on the islands). In this study, radon gas levels have been measured inside 4 greenhouses in Tenerife (Canary Islands) as they are closed and poorly ventilated places in contact with the ground. The results show low levels of radon gas in the greenhouses analysed, specifically under 50 Bq/m3 in all cases, which contrasts with the high values obtained in other underground facilities present in the Canary Islands. Therefore, the greenhouses assessed are not considered to have excessive levels of radon; since the value of radon gas concentration above which the World Health Organisation considers that health problems are generated is 100 Bq/m3.

The Canary Island archipelago holds 2.2 million inhabitants and received more than 14 million tourist visitors in 2019. Its volcanic origin and the presence of recent volcanic activity highlight its potential geothermal interest for heat production, therefore offering an attractive pathway for a renewable energy supply, not only for power generation and deep geothermal exploitation but also for low-enthalpy heating and cooling production. This work investigates nine touristic infrastructures in the Canary Islands which experienced a transition from conventional heat production systems to shallow geothermal energy (SGE) systems. The SGE systems established consisted in ultra-low temperature district heating and cooling (DHC) micro-networks involving, in most cases, small apartment blocks fed by shallow geothermal plants with an average cooling capacity of 602 kW and a heating capacity of 614 kW. The examination of this transition has exhibited an average saving of 374 MWh, 69,235 € and 280 tCO2 for each installation every year. This work provides evidence of the economical, energetical and environmental advantages of SGE technology in volcanic islands facing both and enormous heating and cooling demand due to tourism, in an energy-dependent system that also faces the challenge of the decarbonization of the heating production sector.

After the underwater eruption that took place on the island of El Hierro (Canary Islands, Spain) in 2012, there were significant increases in radon gas emissions in the soil. This study was aimed to measure the radon concentrations in public building in El Hierro in order to have better knowledge of the implications of a submarine eruption and the radon levels on the island. The study was undertaken in 38 public buildings located in the three municipalities of the island. Although high concentrations of radon gas were expected due to the recent eruptions, it was found that 70% of the facilities studied maintained radon gas concentration values below the limit values established by Directive 2013/59/EURATOM.

Water galleries are one of the main systems for capturing groundwater on the western islands of the Canary Islands (Spain). Water galleries are approximately 2-m high × 2-m wide excavated, sub-horizontal drains. This research focuses on taking measurements of radon, a natural radioactive gas present in volcanic territories, such as the Canary Islands, which may cause health problems for workers inside water galleries. The aim of the research is to evaluate radon gas activity as a natural risk in a selected group of water galleries of Tenerife by means of officially approved radon passive detector devices. It was observed that in all the galleries studied, the radon gas concentration values were exceeded by a wide margin, which makes it a factor to be monitored in gallery workers, due to the proven association between radon inhalation and lung cancer.
