In recent years, image segmentation techniques based on deep learning have achieved many applications in remote sensing, medical, and autonomous driving fields. In space exploration, the segmentation of spacecraft objects by monocular images can support space station on-orbit assembly tasks and space target position and attitude estimation tasks, which has essential research value and broad application prospects. However, there is no segmentation network designed for spacecraft targets. This paper proposes an end-to-end spacecraft image segmentation network using the semantic segmentation network DeepLabv3+ as the basic framework. We develop a multi-scale neural network based on sparse convolution. First, the feature extraction capability is improved by the dilated convolutional network. Second, we introduce the channel attention mechanism into the network to recalibrate the feature responses. Finally, we design a parallel atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) structure that enhances the contextual information of the network. To verify the effectiveness of the method, we built a spacecraft segmentation dataset on which we conduct experiments on the segmentation algorithm. The experimental results show that the encoder+ attention+ decoder structure proposed in this paper, which focuses on high-level and low-level features, can obtain clear and complete masks of spacecraft targets with high segmentation accuracy. Compared with DeepLabv3+, our method is a significant improvement. We also conduct an ablation study to research the effectiveness of our network framework.

In this paper, we propose a novel 3D object detector KDA3D, which achieves high-precision and robust classification, segmentation, and localization with the help of key-point densification and multi-attention guidance. The proposed end-to-end neural network architecture takes LIDAR point clouds as the main inputs that can be optionally complemented by RGB images. It consists of three parts: part-1 segments 3D foreground points and generates reliable proposals; part-2 (optional) enhances point cloud density and reconstructs the more compact full-point feature map; part-3 refines 3D bounding boxes and adds semantic segmentation as extra supervision. Our designed lightweight point-wise and channel-wise attention modules can adaptively strengthen the “skeleton” and “distinctiveness” point-features to help feature learning networks capture more representative or finer patterns. The proposed key-point densification component can generate pseudo-point clouds containing target information from monocular images through the distance preference strategy and K-means clustering so as to balance the density distribution and enrich sparse features. Extensive experiments on the KITTI and nuScenes 3D object detection benchmarks show that our KDA3D produces state-of-the-art results while running in near real-time with a low memory footprint.

Remote sensing images usually contain abundant targets and complex information distributions. Consequently, networks are required to model both global and local information in the super-resolution (SR) reconstruction of remote sensing images. The existing SR reconstruction algorithms generally focus on only local or global features, neglecting effective feedback for reconstruction errors. Therefore, a Global Residual Multi-attention Fusion Back-projection Network (SRBPSwin) is introduced by combining the back-projection mechanism with the Swin Transformer. We incorporate a concatenated Channel and Spatial Attention Block (CSAB) into the Swin Transformer Block (STB) to design a Multi-attention Hybrid Swin Transformer Block (MAHSTB). SRBPSwin develops dense back-projection units to provide bidirectional feedback for reconstruction errors, enhancing the network’s feature extraction capabilities and improving reconstruction performance. SRBPSwin consists of the following four main stages: shallow feature extraction, shallow feature refinement, dense back projection, and image reconstruction. Firstly, for the input low-resolution (LR) image, shallow features are extracted and refined through the shallow feature extraction and shallow feature refinement stages. Secondly, multiple up-projection and down-projection units are designed to alternately process features between high-resolution (HR) and LR spaces, obtaining more accurate and detailed feature representations. Finally, global residual connections are utilized to transfer shallow features during the image reconstruction stage. We propose a perceptual loss function based on the Swin Transformer to enhance the detail of the reconstructed image. Extensive experiments demonstrate the significant reconstruction advantages of SRBPSwin in quantitative evaluation and visual quality.

Recently, the research on monocular 3D target detection based on pseudo-LiDAR data has made some progress. In contrast to LiDAR-based algorithms, the robustness of pseudo-LiDAR methods is still inferior. After conducting in-depth experiments, we realized that the main limitations are due to the inaccuracy of the target position and the uncertainty in the depth distribution of the foreground target. These two problems arise from the inaccurate depth estimation. To deal with the aforementioned problems, we propose two innovative solutions. The first is a novel method based on joint image segmentation and geometric constraints, used to predict the target depth and provide the depth prediction confidence measure. The predicted target depth is fused with the overall depth of the scene and results in the optimal target position. For the second, we utilize the target scale, normalized with the Gaussian function, as a priori information. The uncertainty of depth distribution, which can be visualized as long-tail noise, is reduced. With the refined depth information, we convert the optimized depth map into the point cloud representation, called a pseudo-LiDAR point cloud. Finally, we input the pseudo-LiDAR point cloud to the LiDAR-based algorithm to detect the 3D target. We conducted extensive experiments on the challenging KITTI dataset. The results demonstrate that our proposed framework outperforms various state-of-the-art methods by more than 12.37% and 5.34% on the easy and hard settings of the KITTI validation subset, respectively. On the KITTI test set, our framework also outperformed state-of-the-art methods by 5.1% and 1.76% on the easy and hard settings, respectively.

Single image dehazing is a highly challenging ill-posed problem. Existing methods including both prior-based and learning-based heavily rely on the conceptual simplified atmospheric scattering model by estimating the so-called medium transmission map and atmospheric light. However, the formation of haze in the real world is much more complicated and inaccurate estimations further degrade the dehazing performance with color distortion, artifacts and insufficient haze removal. Moreover, most dehazing networks treat spatial-wise and channel-wise features equally, but haze is practically unevenly distributed across an image, thus regions with different haze concentrations require different attentions. To solve these problems, we propose an end-to-end trainable densely connected residual spatial and channel attention network based on the conditional generative adversarial framework to directly restore a haze-free image from an input hazy image, without explicitly estimation of any atmospheric scattering parameters. Specifically, a novel residual attention module is proposed by combining spatial attention and channel attention mechanism, which could adaptively recalibrate spatial-wise and channel-wise feature weights by considering interdependencies among spatial and channel information. Such a mechanism allows the network to concentrate on more useful pixels and channels. Meanwhile, the dense network can maximize the information flow along features from different levels to encourage feature reuse and strengthen feature propagation. In addition, the network is trained with a multi-loss function, in which contrastive loss and registration loss are novel refined to restore sharper structures and ensure better visual quality. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on both public synthetic datasets and real-world images with more visually pleasing dehazed results.
