We present a hybrid algorithm called parallel simulated annealing with a greedy algorithm (PSAGA) to learn Bayesian network structures. This work focuses on simulated annealing and its parallelization with memoization to accelerate the search process. At each step of the local search, a hybrid search method combining simulated annealing with a greedy algorithm was adopted. The proposed PSAGA aims to achieve both the efficiency of parallel search and the effectiveness of a more exhaustive search. The Bayesian Dirichlet equivalence metric was used to determine an optimal structure for PSAGA. The proposed PSAGA was evaluated on seven well-known Bayesian network benchmarks generated at random. We first conducted experiments to evaluate the computational time performance of the proposed parallel search. We then compared PSAGA with existing variants of simulated annealing-based algorithms to evaluate the quality of the learned structure. Overall, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed PSAGA shows better performance than the alternatives in terms of computational time and accuracy.

Control charts have been used effectively for years to monitor processes and detect abnormal behaviors. However, most control charts require a specific distribution to establish their control limits. The bootstrap method is a nonparametric technique that does not rely on the assumption of a parametric distribution of the observed data. Although the bootstrap technique has been used to develop univariate control charts to monitor a single process, no effort has been made to integrate the effectiveness of the bootstrap technique with multivariate control charts. In the present study, we propose a bootstrap-based multivariate T2 control chart that can efficiently monitor a process when the distribution of observed data is nonnormal or unknown. A simulation study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed control chart and compare it with a traditional Hotelling's T2 control chart and the kernel density estimation (KDE)-based T2 control chart. The results showed that the proposed chart performed better than the traditional T2 control chart and performed comparably with the KDE-based T2 control chart. Furthermore, we present a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed control chart to real situations.

Extracting useful and meaningful patterns from large volumes of text data is of growing importance. In the present study we analyze vast amounts of prescription data, generated from the book of oriental medicine to identify the relationships between the symptoms and the associated medicines used to treat these symptoms. The oriental medicine book used in this study (called Bangyakhappyeon) contains a large number of prescriptions to treat about 54 categorized symptoms and lists the corresponding herbal materials. We used an association rule algorithm combined with network analysis and found useful and informative relationships between the symptoms and medicines.
