Silicon carbide (SiC) power devices have been investigated extensively in the past two decades, and there are many devices commercially available now. Owing to the intrinsic material advantages of SiC over silicon (Si), SiC power devices can operate at higher voltage, higher switching frequency, and higher temperature. This paper reviews the technology progress of SiC power devices and their emerging applications. The design challenges and future trends are summarized at the end of the paper.

Induction heating (IH) technology is nowadays the heating technology of choice in many industrial, domestic, and medical applications due to its advantages regarding efficiency, fast heating, safety, cleanness, and accurate control. Advances in key technologies, i.e., power electronics, control techniques, and magnetic component design, have allowed the development of highly reliable and cost-effective systems, making this technology readily available and ubiquitous. This paper reviews IH technology summarizing the main milestones in its development and analyzing the current state of art of IH systems in industrial, domestic, and medical applications, paying special attention to the key enabling technologies involved. Finally, an overview of future research trends and challenges is given, highlighting the promising future of IH technology.

Domestic induction cookers operation is based on a resonant inverter which supplies medium-frequency currents (20-100 kHz) to an inductor, which heats up the pan. The variable load that is inherent to this application requires the use of a reliable and load-adaptive control algorithm. In addition, a wide output power range is required to get a satisfactory user performance. In this paper, a control algorithm to cover the variety of loads and the output power range is proposed. The main design criteria are efficiency, power balance, acoustic noise, flicker emissions, and user performance. As a result of the analysis, frequency limit and power level limit algorithms are proposed based on square wave and pulse density modulations. These have been implemented in a field-programmable gate array, including output power feedback and mains-voltage zero-cross-detection circuitry. An experimental verification has been performed using a commercial induction heating inverter. This provides a convenient experimental test bench to analyze the viability of the proposed algorithm.

Thermal management is a key design aspect of power converters since it determines their reliability as well as their final performance and power density. Cooling technologies have been a research area in electronics since the 1940s and, in the last 15 years, the number of articles related to this field has grown significantly. At present, thermal management is essential in new disciplines and it is a critical enabling technology in the development of power electronic systems. This paper aims at presenting a review of the state-of-the-art technology and provides future design guidelines for high efficiency power electronic converters. The main design trends are focused on the need to develop cooling systems able to manage high local density heat fluxes due to two converging trends: higher power dissipation and smaller module size. Considering the latest advances in thermal management, as well as the huge improvement in power electronics in the last decades, a review and classification of the main thermal management techniques is presented. Besides, they are compared considering important parameters such as peak power dissipation, efficiency, cost/complexity, power density or technical maturity, and a design example for an ultrahigh efficiency converter is presented.

The efficiency of zero voltage switching half-bridge series resonant inverter can be decreased under certain load conditions due to the high switching frequencies required. The proposed variable frequency duty cycle (VFDC) control is intended to improve the efficiency in the medium and low output power levels because of the decreased switching frequencies. The study performed in this letter includes, in a first step, a theoretical analysis of power balance as a function of control parameters. In addition, restrictions due to snubber capacitors and deadtime, and variability of the loads have been considered. Afterward, an efficiency analysis has been carried out to determine the optimum operation point. Switching and conduction losses have been calculated to examine the overall efficiency improvement. VFDC strategy efficiency improvement is achieved by means of a switching-frequency reduction, mainly at low-medium power range, and with low-quality factor loads. Domestic induction heating application is suitable for the use of VFDC strategy due to its special load characteristics. For this reason, the simulation results have been validated using an induction heating inverter with a specially designed load.

Mutual inductance is a key parameter of the inductively coupled circuits such as transformers and contactless energy transfer systems. This parameter is particularly required to design the power electronics associated with each application. However, its value is usually extracted from measurements performed in a previously built prototype, which is an expensive and time-consuming task. In this paper, an analysis of the mutual inductance between two planar circular windings is developed. The analysis takes into account the effect of the media that can be part of the complete system. As a result, an analytical calculation of the mutual inductance with respect to the main parameters of the system such as the number of turns of the coils, geometry, frequency of the currents, and the properties of the media can be carried out. The analysis can also be used to explore the tendencies of the mutual inductance for design purposes and, thus, it allows speeding up the design process. The analysis has been verified by means of experimental results.
