A demagnetization fault not only degrades the performance of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system, but also may even cause the irreversible demagnetization. This article presents an improved-sliding-mode-observer (ISMO) based equivalent-input-disturbance (EID) method to reconstruct a demagnetization fault and to perform fault-tolerant control for the demagnetization fault in a PMSM drive system. The models of healthy and demagnetized PMSM are first established. Next, an ISMO is constructed by inserting a decoupling term. It completely removes the influence of the motor speed on the reconstruction of a demagnetization fault. Then, the ISMO-based EID approach is developed to reconstruct the fault with the high precision and maintain system control performance even for a demagnetization fault. The stability of the whole system is proved by using the concept of globally uniformly ultimately bounded. Finally, the validity of the method is demonstrated using hardware-in-the-loop simulation.
To prevent irreversible demagnetization of a permanent magnet (PM) for interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) by flux-weakening control, a robust PM flux-linkage nonsingular fast terminal-sliding-mode observer (NFTSMO) is proposed to detect demagnetization faults. First, the IPMSM mathematical model of demagnetization is presented. Second, the construction of the NFTSMO to estimate PM demagnetization faults in IPMSM is described, and a proof of observer stability is given. The fault decision criteria and fault-processing method are also presented. Finally, the proposed scheme was simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and implemented on the RT-LABplatform. A number of robustness tests have been carried out. The scheme shows good performance in spite of speed fluctuations, torque ripples and the uncertainties of stator resistance.

The reliability and availability of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system are of increasing importance in industrial applications. Occurrence of current sensor faults in the system can lead to system degradation, early detection of the faults has become an important problem. However, various external disturbances seriously affect the accuracy of the faults detection. This paper presents a method of current sensor faults reconstruction for PMSM drives containing unknown disturbances. An equivalent-input-disturbance approach is devised to reject effects of unknown disturbance on system performance and reconstruction of faults, and an integral observer is designed to approximately separate faults from the measured output to eliminate the interference to disturbance rejection. Then, a sliding-mode observer is designed for the disturbance-rejected system with current sensor faults, the faults are reconstructed based on sliding-mode equivalent control methodology. The presented scheme has good performance in terms of faults reconstruction and is robust to time-varying unknown disturbances. Simulations and experiments validate the effectiveness of the method.
This paper proposes a current sensor fault detection method based on a sliding mode observer for the torque closed-loop control system of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors. First, a sliding mode observer based on the extended flux linkage is built to simplify the motor model, which effectively eliminates the phenomenon of salient poles and the dependence on the direct axis inductance parameter, and can also be used for real-time calculation of feedback torque. Then a sliding mode current observer is constructed in αβ coordinates to generate the fault residuals of the phase current sensors. The method can accurately identify abrupt gain faults and slow-variation offset faults in real time in faulty sensors, and the generated residuals of the designed fault detection system are not affected by the unknown input, the structure of the observer, and the theoretical derivation and the stability proof process are concise and simple. The RT-LAB real-time simulation is used to build a simulation model of the hardware in the loop. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper deals with a current sensor fault reconstruction algorithm for the torque closed-loop drive system of an interior PMSM. First, sensor faults are equated to actuator ones by a new introduced state variable. Then, in αβ coordinates, based on the motor model with active flux linkage, a current observer is constructed with a specific sliding mode equivalent control methodology to eliminate the effects of unknown disturbances, and the phase current sensor faults are reconstructed by means of an adaptive method. Finally, an αβ axis current fault processing module is designed based on the reconstructed value. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by simulation and experimental tests on the RT-LAB platform.
