Magnetization processes are analytically described for the arrays of soft ferromagnetic polycrystalline circular dots with submicron dimensions, wherein the magnetization reversal accompanied by nucleation, displacement, and annihilation of magnetic vortices. Magnetostatic, exchange, and Zeeman energies are taken into account for the analysis. The magnetic state of each dot in an applied magnetic field is treated as an off-centered rigid vortex structure; i.e., the vortex keeps its spin distribution while being displaced. This rigid vortex model yields analytical expressions for the size-dependent initial susceptibility, the vortex nucleation, and the annihilation fields. The interdot magnetostatic interaction plays an important role in the magnetization reversal for the arrays when the interdot distance is smaller than the disk radius, where the initial susceptibility increases and both the nucleation and annihilation fields decrease. The analytical predictions are compared to the micromagnetic calculations, and limitations of the model are discussed.

We demonstrate strong magnon-photon coupling of a thin-film Permalloy device fabricated on a coplanar superconducting resonator. A coupling strength of 0.152 GHz and a cooperativity of 68 are found for a 30-nm-thick Permalloy stripe. The coupling strength is tunable by rotating the biasing magnetic field or changing the volume of Permalloy. We also observe an enhancement of magnon-photon coupling in the nonlinear regime of the superconducting resonator, which is attributed to the nucleation of dynamic flux vortices. Our results demonstrate a critical step towards future integrated hybrid systems for quantum magnonics and on-chip coherent information transfer.

We report a high-resolution experimental detection of the resonant behavior of magnetic vortices confined in small disk-shaped ferromagnetic dots. The samples are magnetically soft Fe-Ni disks of diameter 1.1 and 2.2μm and thickness 20 and 40 nm, patterned via electron-beam lithography onto microwave coplanar waveguides. The vortex excitation spectra were probed by a vector network analyzer operating in reflection mode, which records the derivative of the real and the imaginary impedance as a function of frequency. The spectra show well-defined resonance peaks in magnetic fields smaller than the characteristic vortex annihilation field. Resonances at 162 and 272 MHz were detected for disks of 2.2- and 1.1−μm−diameter with thickness 40 nm, respectively. A resonance peak at 83 MHz was detected for 20-nm thick, 2−μm−diameter disks. The resonance frequencies exhibit weak field dependence and scale as a function of the dot geometrical aspect ratio. The measured frequencies are well described by micromagnetic and analytical calculations that rely only on known properties of the dots (such as the dot diameter, thickness, saturation magnetization, and exchange stiffness constant) without any adjustable parameters. We find that the observed resonance originates from the translational motion of the magnetic vortex core.

Quantum technology has made tremendous strides over the past two decades with remarkable advances in materials engineering, circuit design, and dynamic operation. In particular, the integration of different quantum modules has benefited from hybrid quantum systems, which provide an important pathway for harnessing different natural advantages of complementary quantum systems and for engineering new functionalities. This review article focuses on the current frontiers with respect to utilizing magnons for novel quantum functionalities. Magnons are the fundamental excitations of magnetically ordered solid-state materials and provide great tunability and flexibility for interacting with various quantum modules for integration in diverse quantum systems. The concomitant-rich variety of physics and material selection enable exploration of novel quantum phenomena in materials science and engineering. In addition, the ease of generating strong coupling with other excitations makes hybrid magnonics a unique platform for quantum engineering. We start our discussion with circuit-based hybrid magnonic systems, which are coupled with microwave photons and acoustic phonons. Subsequently, we focus on the recent progress of magnon–magnon coupling within confined magnetic systems. Next, we highlight new opportunities for understanding the interactions between magnons and nitrogen-vacancy centers for quantum sensing and implementing quantum interconnects. Lastly, we focus on the spin excitations and magnon spectra of novel quantum materials investigated with advanced optical characterization.

Colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are of interest as non-toxic carriers for drug delivery owing to their advanced properties, such as extensive surface-to-volume ratio and possibilities for tailoring their charge, hydrophilicity and functionality through surface chemistries. To date, various biocompatible polymers have been used for surface decoration of AuNPs to enhance their stability, payloads capacity and cellular uptake. This study describes a facile one-step method to synthesize stable AuNPs loaded with combination of two anticancer therapeutics, -bleomycin and doxorubicin. Anticancer activities, cytotoxicity, uptake and intracellular localization of the AuNPs were demonstrated in HeLa cells. We show that the therapeutic efficacy of the nanohybrid drug was strongly enhanced by the active targeting by the nanoscale delivery system to HeLa cells with a significant decrease of the half-maximal effective drug concentration, through blockage of HeLa cancer cell cycle. These results provide rationale for further progress of AuNPs-assisted combination chemotherapy using two drugs at optimized effective concentrations which act via different mechanisms thus decreasing possibilities of development of the cancer drug resistance, reduction of systemic drug toxicity and improvement of outcomes of chemotherapy.
