Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors help autonomous vehicles detect the surrounding environment and the exact distance to an object’s position. Conventional LiDAR sensors require a certain amount of power consumption because they detect objects by transmitting lasers at a regular interval according to a horizontal angular resolution (HAR). However, because the LiDAR sensors, which continuously consume power inefficiently, have a fatal effect on autonomous and electric vehicles using battery power, power consumption efficiency needs to be improved. In this paper, we propose algorithms to improve the inefficient power consumption of conventional LiDAR sensors, and efficiently reduce power consumption in two ways: (a) controlling the HAR to vary the laser transmission period (TP) of a laser diode (LD) depending on the vehicle’s speed and (b) reducing the static power consumption using a sleep mode, depending on the surrounding environment. The proposed LiDAR sensor with the HAR control algorithm reduces the power consumption of the LD by 6.92% to 32.43% depending on the vehicle’s speed, compared to the maximum number of laser transmissions (Nx.max). The sleep mode with a surrounding environment-sensing algorithm reduces the power consumption by 61.09%. The algorithm of the proposed LiDAR sensor was tested on a commercial processor chip, and the integrated processor was designed as an IC using the Global Foundries 55 nm CMOS process.

As the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming more pervasive in our daily lives, the number of devices that connect to IoT edges and data generated at the edges are rapidly increasing. On account of the bottlenecks in servers, due to the increase in data, as well as security and privacy issues, the IoT paradigm has shifted from cloud computing to edge computing. Pursuant to this trend, embedded devices require complex computation capabilities. However, due to various constraints, edge devices cannot equip enough hardware to process data, so the flexibility of operation is reduced, because of the limitations of fixed hardware functions, relative to cloud computing. Recently, as application fields and collected data types diversify, and, in particular, applications requiring complex computation such as artificial intelligence (AI) and signal processing are applied to edges, flexible processing and computation capabilities based on hardware acceleration are required. In this paper, to meet these needs, we propose a new IoT platform, called a metamorphic IoT (mIoT) platform, which can various hardware acceleration with limited hardware platform resources, through on-demand transmission and reconfiguration of required hardware at edges instead of via transference of sensing data to a server. The proposed platform reconfigures the edge’s hardware with minimal overhead, based on a probabilistic value, known as callability. The mIoT consists of reconfigurable edge devices based on RISC-V architecture and a server that manages the reconfiguration of edge devices based on callability. Through various experimental results, we confirmed that the callability-based mIoT platform can provide the hardware required by the edge device in real time. In addition, by performing various functions with small hardware, power consumption, which is a major constraint of IoT, can be reduced.

Recently, with an increase in the number of healthcare devices, studies measuring and diagnosing electrocardiogram (ECG) signals in daily life are emerging. ECG signal analysis is an essential study area that can diagnose fatal heart abnormalities in humans at an early stage. Conventional signal detection uses one reference beat to diagnose ECG signals; thus, the detection rate is different for each person. In this study, we design a system that can learn a reference beat and diagnose ECG signals in real-time using hardware accelerators with the approximated template-based ECG diagnosis algorithm proposed in the previous study. The proposed algorithm can easily perform personalized learning, increasing the detection rate since it has faster learning time and consumes less memory than the existing algorithm. The learning data, which occupies a small memory space, enables real-time and simultaneous diagnosis of several people. We confirmed that the proposed ECG diagnosis algorithm is suitable for hardware acceleration by accelerating the ECG signal diagnosis and measuring the parallelized result using Alveo field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The ECG diagnosis algorithm, implemented at the FPGA in real-time, can flexibly determine reference beats that vary depending on the person and diagnose each person's signal. The experimental results showed that the time required to diagnose the ECG signals of five people containing 1987 beats takes 5.70 s with software and 0.572 s with hardware accelerators, which is 89.96% shorter than software execution time.

In vehicles for autonomous driving, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is one of the most used sensors, along with cameras. LiDAR sensors that produce a large amount of data in one scan make it difficult to transmit and calculate data in real-time in the vehicle’s embedded system. In this paper, we propose a platform based on semantic depth data-based data reduction and reconstruction algorithms that reduce the amount of data transmission and minimize the errors between original and restored data in a vehicle system using four LiDAR sensors. The proposed platform consists of four LiDAR sensors, an integrated processing unit (IPU) that reduces the data of the LiDAR sensors, and the main processor that reconstructs the reduced data and processes the image. In the proposed platform, the 58,000 bytes of data constituting one frame detected by the VL-AS16 LiDAR sensor were reduced by an average of 87.4% to 7295 bytes by the data reduction algorithm. In the IPU placed near the LiDAR sensor, the memory usage increased by the data reduction algorithm, but the data transmission time decreased by an average of 40.3%. The transmission time where the vehicle’s processor received one frame of data decreased from an average of 1.79 to 0.28 ms. Compared with the original LiDAR sensor data, the reconstructed data showed an average error of 4.39% in the region of interest (ROI). The proposed platform increased the time required for image processing in the vehicle’s main processor by an average of 6.73% but reduced the amount of data by 87.4% with a decrease in data accuracy of 4.39%.

As sensors operating at the edge continue to evolve, the amount of data that edge devices need to process is increasing. Cloud computing methods have been proposed to process complex data on edge devices that are powered by limited resources. However, the existing cloud computing approach, which provides services from servers determined at the compile stage on the edge, is not suitable for the metamorphic edge device proposed in this paper. Therefore, we have realized the operation of metamorphic edge devices by changing the service that accelerates the application in real time according to the surrounding environmental conditions on the edge device. The on-cloud linking approach separates the code for communication from the edge and server into a linkable glue layer. The separated communication code in the linkable glue layer is reconfigured in real time according to the environment of the edge device. To verify the computational acceleration of cloud computing and the real-time service change of the metamorphic edge device, we operated services that perform matrix multiplication operations with one process, two processes, and four processes in parallel on the edge–cloud system based on the on-cloud linking approach. Through the experiments, it was confirmed that the on-cloud linking approach changes the service provided in real time according to changes in external environmental data without changing the code built into the edge. When a square matrix operation with 1000 rows was loaded onto the proposed platform, the size of the code embedded into the edge device decreased by 8.88% and the operation time decreased by 96.7%.
