Different from mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), a flying ad hoc network (FANET) is a very low-density network where node topology changes rapidly and irregularly. These characteristics, the density, mobility, and speed of flight nodes, affect the performance of FANET. Furthermore, application scenarios and environmental settings could affect the performance of FANETs. In this paper, we analyzed the representative FANET protocols, AODV, DSDV, and OLSR, according to mobility models, SRWP, MP, RDPZ, EGM, and DPR, under the multi-UAV-based reconnaissance scenario. We evaluated them in terms of the number of nodes, network connectivity, mobility model’s reconnaissance rate, speed of nodes, and ground control station (GCS) location. As a result, we found that AODV showed the highest PDR performance (81%) with SRWP in multiple UAV-based reconnaissance scenarios. As for a mobility model under the consideration of reconnaissance rate, SRWP was excellent at 76%, and RDPZ and EGM mobility models were reasonable at 62% and 60%, respectively. We also made several interesting observations such as how when the number of nodes increases, the connectivity of the network increases, but the performance of the routing protocol decreases, and how the GCS location affects the PDR performance of the combination of routing protocols and mobility models.

The health industry is one of the most auspicious domains for the application of Internet of Things (IoT) based technologies. Lots of studies have been carried out in the health industry field to minimize the use of resources and increase the efficiency. The use of IoT combined with other technologies has brought quality advancement in the health sector at minimum expense. One such technology is the use of wireless body area networks (WBANs), which will help patients incredibly in the future and will make them more productive because there will be no need for staying at home or a hospital for a long time. WBANs and IoT have an integrated future as WBANs, like any IoT application, are a collection of heterogeneous sensor-based devices. For the better amalgamation of the IoT and WBANs, several hindrances blocking their integration need to be addressed. One such problem is the efficient routing of data in limited resource sensor nodes (SNs) in WBANs. To solve this and other problems, such as transmission of duplicate sensed data, limited network lifetime, etc., energy harvested and cooperative-enabled efficient routing protocol (EHCRP) for IoT-WBANs is proposed. The proposed protocol considers multiple parameters of WBANs for efficient routing such as residual energy of SNs, number of hops towards the sink, node congestion levels, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and available network bandwidth. A path cost estimation function is calculated to select forwarder node using these parameters. Due to the efficient use of the path-cost estimation process, the proposed mechanism achieves efficient and effective multi-hop routing of data and improves the reliability and efficiency of data transmission over the network. After extensive simulations, the achieved results of the proposed protocol are compared with state-of-the-art techniques, i.e., E-HARP, EB-MADM, PCRP and EERP. The results show significant improvement in network lifetime, network throughout, and end-to-end delay.

Visual acuity (VA) is a measure of the ability to distinguish shapes and details of objects at a given distance and is a measure of the spatial resolution of the visual system. Vision is one of the basic health indicators closely related to a person’s quality of life. It is one of the first basic tests done when an eye disease develops. VA is usually measured by using a Snellen chart or E-chart from a specific distance. However, in some cases, such as the unconsciousness of patients or diseases, i.e., dementia, it can be impossible to measure the VA using such traditional chart-based methodologies. This paper provides a machine learning-based VA measurement methodology that determines VA only based on fundus images. In particular, the levels of VA, conventionally divided into 11 levels, are grouped into four classes and three machine learning algorithms, one SVM model and two CNN models, are combined into an ensemble method in order to predict the corresponding VA level from a fundus image. Based on a performance evaluation conducted using randomly selected 4000 fundus images, we confirm that our ensemble method can estimate with 82.4% of the average accuracy for four classes of VA levels, in which each class of Class 1 to Class 4 identifies the level of VA with 88.5%, 58.8%, 88%, and 94.3%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper on VA measurements based on fundus images using deep machine learning.

As avionics technologies have advanced, it is possible to perform many aerial applications which demand cooperative work with multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Since one of the basic applications is reconnaissance, we focus on efficient cooperative reconnaissance. While random mobility models are useful for multi-UAVs reconnaissance, they suffer from overlapped reconnaissance problem that two or more UAVs reconnoiter a region at the same time. The overlapped reconnaissance also leads to imbalanced reconnaissance in which an area scanned by one UAV may be re-visited soon by the other UAV. Thus, we provide overlap avoidance schemes for the existing reconnaissance mobility models and enhance their performance. Throughout the simulations, we evaluate the effect of applying overlap avoidance in the existing models. The simulation results show that overlapped area is reduced by up to 20 times and 90%-coverage reaching time is improved by up to 19%.

In this paper, we study energy minimization consumption of a mixed criticality real-time system on uni-core. Our focus is on a new scheduling scheme to decrease the frequency level in order to conserve power. Since many systems are equipped with dynamic power and frequency level memory, power can be saved by decreasing the system frequency. In this paper, we provide new dynamic energy minimization consumption in mixed-criticality real-time systems. Recent research has been done on low-criticality mode for power reduction. Thus, the proposed scheme can reduce the energy both in high-criticality and low-criticality modes. The effectiveness of our proposed scheme in energy reduction is clearly shown through simulations results.
