Hyaluronic acid (HA) has a wide range of biomedical applications including the formation of hydrogels, microspheres, sponges, and films. The modeling of HA to understand its behavior and interaction with other biomolecules at the atomic level is of considerable interest. The atomistic representation of long HA polymers for the study of the macroscopic structural formation and its interactions with other polyelectrolytes is computationally demanding. To overcome this limitation, we developed a coarse grained (CG) model for HA adapting the Martini scheme. A very good agreement was observed between the CG model and all-atom simulations for both local (bonded interactions) and global properties (end-to-end distance, a radius of gyration, RMSD). Our CG model successfully demonstrated the formation of HA gel and its structural changes at high salt concentrations. We found that the main role of CaCl2 is screening the electrostatic repulsion between chains. HA gel did not collapse even at high CaCl2 concentrations, and the osmotic pressure decreased, which agrees well with the experimental results. This is a distinct property of HA from other proteins or polynucleic acids which ensures the validity of our CG model. Our HA CG model is compatible with other CG biomolecular models developed under the Martini scheme, which allows for large-scale simulations of various HA-based complex systems.

We revisit the mean-field limiting law screening excess sum rule that holds for rodlike polyelectrolytes. We present an efficient derivation of this law that clarifies its region of applicability: The law holds in the limit of small polymer radius, measured relative to the Debye screening length. From the limiting law, we determine the individual ion excess values for single-salt electrolytes. We also consider the mean-field excess sum away from the limiting region, and we relate this quantity to the osmotic pressure of a dilute polyelectrolyte solution. Finally, we consider numerical simulations of many-body polymer-electrolyte solutions. We conclude that the limiting law often accurately describes the screening of physical charged polymers of interest, such as extended DNA.

The non-monotonic trends of thermodynamic response functions have long been a mystery of water. The idea, that water may be a mixture of two local states,

Ionic liquids (ILs) are appealing electrolytes for their favorable physicochemical properties. However, despite their longstanding use, understanding the capacitive behavior of ILs remains challenging. This is largely due to the formation of a nonconventional electric double layer (EDL) at the electrode-electrolyte interface. This study shows that the short-range Yukawa interactions, representing the large anisotropically charged ILs, demix IL to create a spontaneous surface charge separation, which is reinforced by the strongly coupled charge interaction. The properties of the condensed layer, the onset of charge separation, and the rise of overscreening and crowding critically depend on the asymmetry of Yukawa interactions. In this study, we propose new elementary processes of the excitation dynamics in glassy liquids, which trigger the structural rearrangement in a local and isolated region known as the cooperative rearrangement region. We identify the existence of primary particles which facilitate local dynamics by using a machine learning technique and a time series analysis. The local soft domains are established by a few soft particles that hop between local energy basins. While particles in contact with these primary soft particles respond non-linearly, other particles not in direct contact with them respond linearly as elastic materials.
