To reduce the high mortality rate from cardiovascular disease (CVD), the electrocardiogram (ECG) beat plays a significant role in computer-aided arrhythmia diagnosis systems. However, the complex variations and imbalance of ECG beats make this a challenging issue. Since ECG beat data exist in heavily imbalanced category, an effective long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrence network model with focal loss (FL) is proposed. For this purpose, the LSTM network can disentangle the timing features in complex ECG signals, while the FL is used to resolve the category imbalance by downweighting easily identified normal ECG examples. The advantages of the proposed network have been verified in the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. Experimental results show that the LSTM network with FL achieved a reliable solution to the problem of imbalanced datasets in ECG beat classification and was not sensitive to quality of ECG signals. The proposed method can be deployed in telemedicine scenarios to assist cardiologists into more accurately and objectively diagnosing ECG signals.

Intrusion detection systems (IDS) play an important role in the protection of network operations and services. In this paper, we propose an effective network intrusion detection scheme based on deep learning techniques. The proposed scheme employs a denoising autoencoder (DAE) with a weighted loss function for feature selection, which determines a limited number of important features for intrusion detection to reduce feature dimensionality. The selected data is then classified by a compact multilayer perceptron (MLP) for intrusion identification. Extensive experiments are conducted on the UNSW-NB dataset to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. With a small feature selection ratio of 5.9%, the proposed scheme is still able to achieve a superior performance in terms of different evaluation criteria. The strategic selection of a reduced set of features yields satisfactory detection performance with low memory and computing power requirements, making the proposed scheme a promising solution to intrusion detection in high-speed networks.

The mass of redundant and irrelevant data in network traffic brings serious challenges to intrusion detection, and feature selection can effectively remove meaningless information from the data. Most current filtered and embedded feature selection methods use a fixed threshold or ratio to determine the number of features in a subset, which requires a priori knowledge. In contrast, wrapped feature selection methods are computationally complex and time-consuming; meanwhile, individual feature selection methods have a bias in evaluating features. This work designs an ensemble-based automatic feature selection method called EAFS. Firstly, we calculate the feature importance or ranks based on individual methods, then add features to subsets sequentially by importance and evaluate subset performance comprehensively by designing an NSOM to obtain the subset with the largest NSOM value. When searching for a subset, the subset with higher accuracy is retained to lower the computational complexity by calculating the accuracy when the full set of features is used. Finally, the obtained subsets are ensembled, and by comparing the experimental results on three large-scale public datasets, the method described in this study can help in the classification, and also compared with other methods, we discover that our method outperforms other recent methods in terms of performance.

Quantitative analysis and prediction can help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Quantitative prediction based on traditional model has low accuracy. The variance of model prediction based on shallow neural network is larger. In this paper, cardiovascular disease prediction model based on improved deep belief network (DBN) is proposed. Using the reconstruction error, the network depth is determined independently, and unsupervised training and supervised optimization are combined. It ensures the accuracy of model prediction while guaranteeing stability. Thirty experiments were performed independently on the Statlog (Heart) and Heart Disease Database data sets in the UCI database. Experimental results showed that the mean of prediction accuracy was 91.26% and 89.78%, respectively. The variance of prediction accuracy was 5.78 and 4.46, respectively.

Internet of Things (IoT) devices and services provide convenience but face serious security threats. The network intrusion detection system is vital in ensuring the security of the IoT environment. In the IoT environment, we propose a novel two-stage intrusion detection model that combines machine learning and deep learning to deal with the class imbalance of network traffic data and achieve fine-grained intrusion detection on large-scale flow data. The superiority of the model is verified on the newer and larger CSE-CIC-IDS2018 dataset. In Stage-1, the LightGBM algorithm recognizes normal and abnormal network traffic data and compares six classic machine learning techniques. In Stage-2, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) performs fine-grained attack class detection on the samples predicted to be abnormal in Stage-1. The Stage-2 multiclass classification achieves a detection rate of 99.896%, F1score of 99.862%, and an MCC of 95.922%. The total training time of the two-stage model is 74.876 s. The detection time of a sample is 0.0172 milliseconds. Moreover, we set up an optional Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique based on the imbalance ratio (IR-SMOTE) of the dataset in Stage-2. Experimental results show that, compared with SMOTE technology, the two-stage intrusion detection model can adapt to imbalanced datasets well and reveal higher efficiency and better performance when processing large-scale flow data, outperforming state-of-the-art intrusion detection systems.
