Vietnam is a country with diverse and abundant mineral resources with nearly 5000 mines and ore spots of about 60 different minerals. Mining and processing of mineral resources have contributed about 9.6–10.6% of the country’s GDP since the year of 2000. However, the exploitation and processing of mineral resources have been leading to a certain soil and sediment contamination by heavy metals. Soil and sediment samples around lead-zince mines have been collected and analyzed for Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Ni in Cho Don district, Bac Kan province, Vietnam. Single pollution, geoaccumulation and enrichment indices have been used for assessing the sediment quality in terms of heavy metals by comparison with threshold and ecological risk limits. High concentration of Cu and Zn in the sediment is due to extremely high content of the two metals in the ore-surrounding soil in the lead-zinc mines, i.e. high background values. High concentration of As and Cd in the sediment is affected in a greater extent by high content of the two metals in the ore-surrounding soil in the lead-zinc mines, and in a lesser extent by contamination due to geoaccumulation and enrichment. High Pb concentration in sediment is affected in a greater extent by high content of the metal in the ore-surrounding soil in the lead-zinc mines, and in a lesser extent by contamination due to geoaccumulation and enrichment. The pollution sequence based on an average single pollution index is Pb(125.76) > As(55.48) > Zn(26.82 > Cd(14.17) > Cu(5.08) > Ni(1.36) > Hg(0.42), while based on the average geoaccumulation index, the sediment is mostly uncontaminated with the sequence Cd(1.1) > As(0.7) > Cu, Zn, Hg, Pb, Ni( Hg(4.1) > Pb(1.4) > Cu(0.9) > Ni(0.6). The results highlight the need for a comprehensive and detailed study program on heavy metal content in different soil and sediment resources to identify the magnitude and details of the problem associated with heavy metal contamination for development of a remediation plan and more effective pollution preventing measures including technology develop for recovering of useful components.

In many places in Vietnam central region, the fresh coastal sand dune aquifers have an interface with salty water below, so upon groundwater (GW) abstraction, there is a risk of salty water upconing to the abstraction facilities. With the same abstraction rate, the horizontal drains shall significantly reduce the groundwater level (GWL) drawdown, which significantly reduces the development of saltwater upconing. The results analysis for the design of groundwater abstraction facilities in Thach Tri commune, Thach Ha district, Ha Tinh province have shown the effectiveness of the solution. For infinite distributed aquifers, the GWL drawdown in the facility area with the abstraction rate of 100m3/day by eight 4m- and 8m-long horizontal drains is from 11.7% to 16.8% lower in comparison to a vertical well, respectively, (GWL drawdown in vertical well is 0.733m, GWL drawdown in center of 4m-long horizontal drains is 0.646m and in 8m-long horizontal drains is 0.603m). For 1km x 1km aquifer bounded by no-flow boundaries, GWL drawdown in the vertical well and in the center of eight 4m-and 8m-long horizontal drains are 2.313m, 1.293m and 1.255m, respectively. This is corresponding to GWL drawdown decrease of 44.1% and 45.7% in comparison to the vertical well. The significantly reduced GWL drawdown in abstraction facilities of horizontal drains will significantly reduce the level of salty water upconing and therefore increase the time of abstraction of fresh water. World research results indicate that untreated leachate contains high contents of heavy metals (HM) that are likely to pollute the soil and groundwater (GW) environment and contribute to the increase of HMs in soil and GW. The Freundlich isotherm adsorption parameters are essential to soil input parameters for modelling of HMs’ transport to access the soil skeleton and soil pore water contamination by HMs. Finite element (FE) modelling of advection-dispersion transport of HMs by GW movement along with Freundlich isotherm adsorption parameters which continuously change with space in the model domain and with time is sophisticated to accurately evaluate the HMs’ concentrations in soil skeleton and pore water. The chapter describes the background of the existing isotherm adsorption theory, the adaptation of the Freundlich isotherm adsorption in the soil skeleton and soil pore water contamination by HMs, method of determination of the Freundlich isotherm adsorption parameters, the FE procedure of modelling of advection-dispersion transport of HMs by GW movement in general and along with Freundlich isotherm adsorption parameters in particular. A case study modelling has been demonstrated.
