Morteza Abbaszadegan is a professor of environmental microbiology/engineering and founding director of the NSF Water and Environmental Technology (WET) Center at Arizona State University. The center provides a platform to address issues as diverse as water quality by capitalizing the strengths of partner organizations. He joined the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment in 1999 after spending more than six years in private industry. Abbaszadegan is a Board Certified Environmental Scientist (BCES) by Eminence in the specialty of Environmental Microbiology of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. His research expertise includes: contemporary water quality issues related to health-related water microbiology including microbial detection methodologies, pathogens inactivation and removal mechanisms during water treatment processes, water quality in water distribution systems and microbial monitoring of source waters. He has developed many new techniques for the detection of viruses, bacteria and parasites in water environments. Professor Abbaszadegan has authored more than 100 research manuscripts, book chapters and reports in the area of environmental microbiology and engineering. He has directed 40 doctoral students’ dissertation projects and master students’ thesis projects and 2 bachelors honors thesis projects. He serves as editor of the Journal of Water and Health, an International Water Association publishing.
