In this paper, an improved harmony search (ImHS) algorithm is presented. HS is a simple but efficient metaheuristic method explored in recent literature, that simulates the process of musical improvisation. Two modifications for parameter tuning are proposed to enhance the algorithm performance in the solution of constrained numerical optimization problems, maintaining the simplicity of its original design. Metaheuristics are methods for solving optimization problems, and are based in two processes: exploration (diversification) and exploitation (intensification). The proposed modifications improve both processes in HS, without breaking their balance. A well-known ideal problem set was used as a reference to compare the efficiency of the developed algorithm ImHS with HS and three of its most successful variants, and also with two other metaheuristics of different nature, artificial bee colony (ABC) and modified ABC (MABC). Various techniques were applied to evaluate the algorithm performance with the proposed modifications, in order to validate the reliability of the comparison. In most case studies, ImHS far surpassed the results of HS and ABC, also improving the performance of the selected variants. Additionally, its results reached a similar quality than the obtained with MABC but with a significantly lower computational cost, suggesting that it can be a useful tool for solving real-world optimization problems if they are modeled as constrained numerical cases.

There are problems that are difficult to solve through mathematical programming or by classical methods. These problems are called hard problems due to their high complexity or high dimension. On the other hand, mataheuristics intends to seek a better solution to a problem. The Improvement Harmony Search algorithm is proposed under modification of the bandwidth parameter increasing the quality of the exploitation of the solutions. That is why within the state of the art, are mentioned several versions of harmonic search. The state of the art is supports the fact that the algorithm belongs to the category of those who make modifications to its parameters. This research demonstrates the ability of ImHS to solve a problem of high complexity focused on solving four-bar mechanism designs, whose solutions imply high dimension and which are also classified as hard problems. The two problems that are solved in this investigation, are problems very attacked within the state of the art by various metaheuristics. A comparison is then made against previous solutions with traditional metaheuristics and other versions of harmony search algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness of performance is demonstrated, where proposed algorithm it exceeded five metaheuristic algorithms and five harmony search versions. An optimum is provided in an easy and useful way, the parametric statistics are improved and the number of feasible solutions is exceeded in NP-hard problems as in the case of problems with four-bar mechanisms.

Today, there is a great necessity for security systems in banks, laboratories, etc.; specially those that have restricted areas or expensive equipment. Most of the time people use magnetic cards or similar technologies. However, these kinds of devices can be vulnerable, because these might be used by intruders in case of a misplaced device. More advanced technologies use iris or voice detection, potentially increasing the security level against intruders. This work is focused on the latter group. This paper proposes a hybrid method, for the speech processing area, to select and extract the best features that represent a speech sample. The proposed method makes use of a genetic algorithm along with feed forward neural networks in order to either deny or accept personal access in real time. Finally, to test the proposed method, a series of experiments were conducted, by using fifteen different speakers; obtaining an efficiency rate of up to 97% on intruder detection

Cyberbullying, which manifests in various forms, is a growing challenge on social media, mainly when it involves threats of violence through images, especially those featuring weapons. This study introduces a computational framework to identify such content using convolutional neural networks of weapon-related images. By integrating artificial intelligence techniques with image analysis, our model detects visual patterns associated with violent threats, creating safer digital environments. The development of this work involved analyzing images depicting scenes with weapons carried by children or adolescents. Images were sourced from social media and spatial repositories. The statistics were processed through a 225-layer convolutional neural network, achieving an 86% accuracy rate in detecting weapons in images featuring children, adolescents, and young adults. The classifier method reached an accuracy of 17.86% with training over only 25 epochs and a recall of 14.2%. Weapon detection is a complex task due to the variability in object exposures and differences in weapon shapes, sizes, orientations, colors, and image capture methods. Segmentation issues and the presence of background objects or people further compound this complexity. Our study demonstrates that convolutional neural networks can effectively detect weapons in images, making them a valuable tool in addressing cyberbullying involving weapon imagery. Detecting such content contributes to creating safer digital environments for young people.

This paper address the multilevel image segmentation by merging Gaussian mixtures models (GMM) and Differential Evolution (DE) with constraints handling. Since the estimation of parameters associated to GMM is a complex task, DE is used to estimate them. Afterwards, these parameters are used for obtaining the optimal thresholds and achieve a multilevel image segmentation. The tests include the use of 83 images of a parasite named Trypanosoma. The experiments were done by using original and equalized images. The results show a better performance with the latter. We conclude that the method is likely useful for applications where the data are similar the data used in this work.
