The friction and wear properties of pure poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene (PTFE), 35% carbon filled poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene (PTFE+35%C), and 17% glass fiber-reinforced poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene (PTFE+17%GFR) sliding against stainless steel under dry sliding conditions were studied by using a pin-on-disc tribometer. The effect of applied pressure and sliding speed on tribological properties of the polymer-stainless steel combination under dry sliding conditions was investigated. Tests were carried out at sliding speeds of 0.32, 0.64, 0.96, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 m/s and under applied pressures of 0.17, 0.34, 0.68, 1.02, 1.76, 3.53, 5.30, and 7.07 MPa. Optical microscopy was utilized to examine the worn surfaces of pure PTFE and it’s composite. The results indicated that, for pure PTFE, carbon-filled PTFE and glass fiber-reinforced PTFE composites are used in this investigation; the friction coefficient decreases with the increase in applied load values. The maximum reduction in wear rate was obtained by glass fiber-reinforced PTFE composite. The specific wear rate for pure PTFE, carbon filled PTFE composite, and glass fiber-reinforced PTFE composite were in the order of 10-13, 10-14, and 10-15 m 2/N, respectively. The wear mechanism include adhesive and abrasive processes.

In this study, mechanical testing of glass bead (GB), glass fiber (GF), and hybrid (GB/GF) composites was carried out. Following that, drilling tests were undertaken on glass bead/fiber-reinforced hybrid Polyamide 66 (PA66) polymer composites. The purpose of this study is to determine the mechanical properties of the cutting elements and the effect of cutting parameters (spindle speed and feed rate) and reinforcement ratios on thrust force and surface roughness (Ra). The contribution of the cutting parameters to the investigated outcomes was determined using statistical analysis. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to inspect the hole quality and damage mechanisms. The results revealed that the feed rate was the most contributing factor to thrust force (96.94%) and surface roughness (63.59%). Furthermore, in comparison to other hybrid composites, the lowest Ra value was obtained as 0.95 µm in samples containing 30% GB, while the Ra value was 1.04 µm in samples containing 10% GF + 20% GB. Polymer PA reinforced with 30% GF had the highest strength, modulus of elasticity, impact strength, and hardness.

Polyamide-imide (PAI) polymer is a high-temperature resistant polymer, which is used as contact breaker material because of its high electrical insulation property. The working conditions of contact breakers arise from the wear and friction problem conditions of these materials. Therefore, the tribological behavior of PAI polymer is important. In this study, the friction and wear performance of pure PAI polymer and PAI composite [PAI+12% graphite+3% polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)] were studied in two different cooling environmental conditions (with and without air cooling). Wear tests were carried out with the configuration of a polymer pin, on a rotating AISI 316 L stainless steel disc. Test conditions were atmospheric conditions, 50 N, 100 N, and 150 N loads and 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 m/s sliding speeds. For sliding without air cooling and sliding with air cooling, the results show that the coefficient of friction and wear rates for pure PAI and PAI+12% graphite+3% PTFE composite, slightly decrease and increase with the increase in applied load and sliding speed values, respectively. In addition, for the range of loads and sliding speeds of this study, low coefficients of friction and high specific wear rates are registered at sliding under air cooling conditions. Finally, the wear mechanism includes adhesive and abrasive processes.

This study presents the tribological properties, wear and friction, of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene under conditions of dry sliding and Hank’s balanced salt solution lubrication. A pin-on-stainless steel disc apparatus was used for the friction and wear tests. Applied load conditions were 38, 50, 88, 100, 138, and 150N. Sliding speed conditions were 0.4, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5 m/s. The results show that the coefficient of friction and the wear rate values decrease with the increase of applied load. The coefficient of friction and the wear rate values were highest under the dry sliding condition for the ranges of the sliding speed values and the applied loads tested in the study. In addition, the applicability of artificial neural networks (ANN) for predicting both the coefficients of friction and wear rate values of the material in different sliding conditions was studied. The neural network results were in agreement with the experimental results for the wear rates and coefficients of friction
