Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are now widely used in many fields. Due to the randomness of UAV flight height and shooting angle, UAV images usually have the following characteristics: many small objects, large changes in object scale, and complex background. Therefore, object detection in UAV aerial images is a very challenging task. To address the challenges posed by these characteristics, this paper proposes a novel UAV image object detection method based on global feature aggregation and context feature extraction named the multi-scale feature information extraction and fusion network (MFEFNet). Specifically, first of all, to extract the feature information of objects more effectively from complex backgrounds, we propose an efficient spatial information extraction (SIEM) module, which combines residual connection to build long-distance feature dependencies and effectively extracts the most useful feature information by building contextual feature relations around objects. Secondly, to improve the feature fusion efficiency and reduce the burden brought by redundant feature fusion networks, we propose a global aggregation progressive feature fusion network (GAFN). This network adopts a three-level adaptive feature fusion method, which can adaptively fuse multi-scale features according to the importance of different feature layers and reduce unnecessary intermediate redundant features by utilizing the adaptive feature fusion module (AFFM). Furthermore, we use the MPDIoU loss function as the bounding-box regression loss function, which not only enhances model robustness to noise but also simplifies the calculation process and improves the final detection efficiency. Finally, the proposed MFEFNet was tested on VisDrone and UAVDT datasets, and the mAP0.5 value increased by 2.7% and 2.2%, respectively.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) image object detection has great application value in the military and civilian fields. However, the objects in the captured images from UAVs have problems of large-scale variation, complex backgrounds, and a large proportion of small objects. To resolve these problems, a multi-scale object detector based on coordinate and global information aggregation is proposed, named CGMDet. Firstly, a Coordinate and Global Information Aggregation Module (CGAM) is designed by aggregating local, coordinate, and global information, which can obtain features with richer context information. Secondly, a Feature Fusion Module (FFM) is proposed, which can better fuse features by learning the importance of different scale features and improve the representation ability of multi-scale features by reusing feature maps to help models better detect multi-scale objects. Moreover, more location information of low-level feature maps is integrated to improve the detection results of small targets. Furthermore, we modified the bounding box regression loss of the model to make the model more accurately regress the bounding box and faster convergence. Finally, we tested the CGMDet on VisDrone and UAVDT datasets. The proposed CGMDet improves mAP0.5 by 1.9% on the VisDrone dataset and 3.0% on the UAVDT dataset.

As we all know, waste pollution is one of the most serious environmental issues in the world. Efficient detection of solid waste (SW) in aerial images can improve subsequent waste classification and automatic sorting on the ground. However, traditional methods have some problems, such as poor generalization and limited detection performance. This article presents an anchor-based object detector for solid waste in aerial images (SWDet). Specifically, we construct asymmetric deep aggregation (ADA) network with structurally reparameterized asymmetric blocks to extract waste features with inconspicuous appearance. Besides, considering the waste with blurred boundaries caused by the resolution of aerial images, this article constructs efficient attention fusion pyramid network (EAFPN) to obtain contextual information and multiscale geospatial information via attention fusion. And the model can capture the scattering features of irregular shape waste. In addition, we construct the dataset for solid waste aerial detection (SWAD) by collecting aerial images of SW in Henan Province, China, to validate the effectiveness of our method. Experimental results show that SWDet outperforms most of existing methods for SW detection in aerial images.

Aircraft detection for remote sensing images, as one of the fields of computer vision, is one of the significant tasks of image processing based on deep learning. Recently, many high-performance algorithms for aircraft detection have been developed and applied in different scenarios. However, the proposed algorithms still have a series of problems; for instance, the algorithms will miss some small-scale aircrafts when applied to the remote sensing image. There are two main reasons for the problem; one reason is that the aircrafts in the remote sensing image are usually small in size, leading to detecting difficulty. The other reason is that the background of the remote sensing image is usually complex, so the algorithms applied to the scenario are easy to be affected by the background. To address the problem of small size, this paper proposes the Multiscale Detection Network (MSDN) which introduces a multiscale detection architecture to detect small-scale aircrafts. With the intention to resist the background noise, this paper proposes the Deeper and Wider Module (DAWM) which increases the perceptual field of the network to alleviate the affection. Besides, to address the two problems simultaneously, this paper introduces the DAWM into the MSDN and names the novel network structure as Multiscale Refined Detection Network (MSRDN). The experimental results show that the MSRDN method has detected the small-scale aircrafts that other algorithms missed and the performance indicators have higher performance than other algorithms.

With the advancements in deep learning and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology, an increasing number of individuals are utilizing deep learning techniques to detect ships in SAR images. However, the efficiency of SAR ship detection is affected by complex background interference and various ship sizes. Addressing these challenges, this paper proposes a balanced feature-enhanced attention model (BFEA). First, we introduce a novel Attention Feature Fusion Network (WEF-Net) tailored for SAR multi-scale ship detection. WEF-Net effectively balances the information across different backbone layers and harmonizes semantic information from various levels of the feature pyramid through aggregation and averaging. Next, we embed the receiving field extension module (MRFFM) in WEF-Net to learn the context information and generate the global characteristics of the receiving field balance. In addition, it can extract features from multiple scales to enhance the detection capability of the model for ships of different scales. At the same time, acknowledging the impact of surrounding complex background interference on the detector, we redesigned the ELAN module by combining convolution and attention, This enhancement enables the model to better attend to target position information during feature fusion, suppress the surrounding complex background interference, and highlight the ship's feature information. Finally, owing to the prevalence of small targets in SAR images, we employ an optimized loss function to bolster the model's performance in detecting small targets. This approach accelerates training convergence, reduces instances of missed detection on small targets, and enhances overall detection performance across multiple scales. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves detection accuracies of 98%, 93.1%, and 76.9% on the SSDD, HRSID, and LS-SSDD-v1.0 datasets, respectively, effectively discerning ship targets amidst complex backgrounds in SAR images.
