Cooperation between the fog and the cloud in mobile cloud computing environments could offer improved offloading services to smart mobile user equipment (UE) with computation intensive tasks. In this paper, we tackle the computation offloading problem in a mixed fog/cloud system by jointly optimizing the offloading decisions and the allocation of computation resource, transmit power, and radio bandwidth while guaranteeing user fairness and maximum tolerable delay. This optimization problem is formulated to minimize the maximal weighted cost of delay and energy consumption (EC) among all UEs, which is a mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we propose a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm to solve it, where the offloading decisions are obtained via semidefinite relaxation and randomization, and the resource allocation is obtained using fractional programming theory and Lagrangian dual decomposition. Simulation results are presented to verify the convergence performance of our proposed algorithms and their achieved fairness among UEs, and the performance gains in terms of delay, EC, and the number of beneficial UEs over existing algorithms.

The cloud-edge-terminal collaborative network (CETCN) is considered as a novel paradigm for emerging applications owing to its huge potential in providing low-latency and ultra-reliable computing services. However, achieving such benefits is very challenging due to the heterogeneous computing power of terminal devices and the complex environment faced by the CETCN. In particular, the high-dimensional and dynamic environment states cause difficulties for the CETCN to make efficient decisions in terms of task offloading, collaborative caching and mobility management. To this end, artificial intelligence (AI), especially deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has been proven effective in solving sequential decision-making problems in various domains, and offers a promising solution for the above-mentioned issues due to several reasons. Firstly, accurate modelling of the CETCN, which is difficult to obtain for real-world applications, is not required for the DRL-based method. Secondly, DRL can effectively respond to high-dimensional and dynamic tasks through iterative interactions with the environment. Thirdly, due to the complexity of tasks and the differences in resource supply among different vendors, collaboration is required between different vendors to complete tasks. The multi-agent DRL (MADRL) methods are very effective in solving collaborative tasks, where the collaborative tasks can be jointly completed by cloud, edge and terminal devices which provided by different vendors. This survey provides a comprehensive overview regarding the applications of DRL and MADRL in the context of CETCN. The first part of this survey provides a depth overview of the key concepts of the CETCN and the mathematical underpinnings of both DRL and MADRL. Then, we highlight the applications of RL algorithms in solving various challenges within CETCN, such as task offloading, resource allocation, caching and mobility management. In addition, we extend discussion to explore how DRL and MADRL are making inroads into emerging CETCN scenarios like intelligent transportation system (ITS), the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), smart health and digital agriculture. Furthermore, security considerations related to the application of DRL within CETCN are addressed, along with an overview of existing standards that pertain to edge intelligence. Finally, we list several lessons learned in this evolving field and outline future research opportunities and challenges that are critical for the development of the CETCN. We hope this survey will attract more researchers to investigate scalable and decentralized AI algorithms for the design of CETCN.

This paper investigates an integrated wireless communication system including non-orthogonal multiple access, full-duplex relaying, and energy harvesting techniques (named as EH-FD-NOMA). In this scheme, an energy-limited full-duplex relay harvests energy from a source at the first stage. Then, the relay detects the superimposed signal from the source and transmits the decoded signal to destination. Closed-form outage probabilities and ergodic rates at the relay and destination are derived. Numerical results verify the analytical results and show the superior performance of the EH-FD-NOMA if compared to its counterparts.

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) is capable of meeting the challenging requirements of next-generation networks, e.g. , 6G, as a benefit of providing computing and caching capabilities in the close proximity of the users. However, the traditional MEC architecture relies on specialized hardware and its bespoke software functions are closely integrated with the hardware, hence it is too rigid for supporting the rapidly evolving scenarios in the face of the demanding requirements of 6G. As a remedy, we conceive the compelling concept of open-source cellular networking and intrinsically amalgamate it with MEC, which is defined by open-source software running on general-purpose hardware platforms. Specifically, an open-source MEC (OS-MEC) scheme is presented relying on a pair of core principles: the decoupling of the MEC functions and resources from each other with the aid of network function virtualization (NFV); as well as the reconfiguration of the disaggregated MEC functions and resources into customized edge instances. This philosophy allows operators to adaptively customize their users’ networks. Then, we develop improved networking functions for OS-MEC decoupling and discuss both its key components as well as the process of OS-MEC reconfiguration. The typical use cases of the proposed OS-MEC scheme are characterized with the aid of a small-scale test network. Finally, we discuss some of the potential open-source-related technical challenges when facing 6G.

This paper presents a probabilistic decision-making framework for rear-end collision avoidance systems, focusing on modeling the impact of major collision-causing factors on the occurrence of accidents. Decisions on when and how to assist drivers are made using a Bayesian network approach according to collision risk evaluation results, given a prior probabilistic knowledge. The structure of the Bayesian network model is learnt using a K2 algorithm with a practical dataset. To provide adequate response time for drivers, we also predict collision probability in the next monitoring interval using a Kalman filter model. The prediction accuracy is evaluated with different use cases and compared to real scenarios with the obtained dataset. To make our framework more relevant to practical applications, we also discuss the corresponding safety control strategies by classifying collision risk into high and low levels. In addition, the proposed model is evaluated through experiments including simulations and road tests. In the simulations, the algorithms are tested in different scenarios with various configurations of weather conditions, driver response capability, and vehicular dynamics. In order to demonstrate collision avoidance performance, the proposed model is also compared to existing schemes. In the road tests, the algorithm is embedded into an unmanned vehicle with predefined parameters to evaluate the impact of computational complexity on rear-end collision avoidance. Numerical results show that the proposed model provides an accurate estimation for car-following collision risk with a relatively low complexity, taking into account the impacts of vehicle dynamics, driver reaction capacity, and external environment on rear-end collisions.
