I am scientific director of the Alcohol Research Group, in the Public Health Institute, Emeryville, CA, with ARG involving about 15 NIH-funded scientists. My most recent NIAAA grants have been on alcohol's harms to others, in US adults (recently completed) and a multinational equivalent (continuing with Sharon Wilsnack and Kim Bloomfield and myself as multiple PIs). These projects emphasize the relevance of alcohol’s secondhand effects for alcohol policy. My career has been in alcohol epidemiology and policy studies and I directed our NIAAA-supported Center on the Epidemiology of Alcohol Problems from 1999 to 2015. I came to this country to study astronomy (Caltech BS--I am now on the Chair's Council in the Division of Geological & Planetary Sciences) and space/planetary science (MIT SM) but then switched to clinical psychology (U Michigan, PhD). Awards: 2016 APHA ATOD section’s Lifetime Achievement Award; 2019 co-winner of the Jellinek Memorial Award for Alcohol Studies.
