Jorge Gonçalves is a full professor and a head of department. He is the research leader of the Mechanistic Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy Unit, a research group of the Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit, a research unit recognized by FCT, the Portuguese agency for research and technology. The present work is in line with the research started by him in the lab in the 1990s, on the mechanisms of modulation of neurotransmitter release (mainly noradrenaline) by purines. Our present interests are still on the mechanisms in which noradrenaline and purines participate, namely of their role on tumorigenesis and on the contribution for the immunosuppressor environment in cancer. Jorge Gonçalves has been a member of the Portuguese Pharmacological Society since 1987.
