The number of people living without access to clean water can be reduced by the implementation of point-of-use (POU) water treatment. Among POU treatment systems, the domestic biosand filter (BSF) stands out as a viable technology. However, the performance of the BSF varies with the inflow water quality characteristics, especially turbidity. In some locations, people have no choice but to treat raw water that has turbidity above recommended levels for the technology. This study aimed to measure the efficiency with which the BSF removes microorganisms from well water and from fecal-contaminated water with turbidity levels of 3, 25, and 50 NTU. Turbidity was controlled by the addition of kaolin to water. Turbidity removal varied from 88% to 99%. Reductions in total coliform (TC) and Escherichia coli ranged from 0.54–2.01 and 1.2–2.2 log removal values (LRV), respectively. The BSF that received water with a higher level of turbidity showed the greatest reduction in the concentration of microorganisms. Additional testing with water contaminated with four bacterial pure cultures showed reductions between 2.7 and 3.6 LRV. A higher reduction in microorganisms was achieved after 30–35 days in operation. Despite the filter’s high efficiency, the filtrates still had some microorganisms, and a disinfection POU treatment could be added to increase water safety.

This study aimed at providing a set of optimal kinetic and stoichiometric parameters of ASM1 representative of wastewater from a subtropical climate region in Brazil. ASM1 was applied on the STOAT program, and the model parameters were evaluated and optimized with sensitivity analysis and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to reach minimum prediction errors of effluent TSS, COD, and NH3. Six sensitive parameters were identified: YH, YA, μA, KNH, bA, and kOA. Predictions of RSM regression models were strongly correlated to the STOAT predictions. YH mainly affected TSS and COD, and the other parameters affected NH3. ASM1 calibration with estimated optimal values of sensitive parameters resulted in approximately null prediction errors for modeling state variables. NH3 presented similar results in the ASM1 validation; meanwhile, TSS and COD presented high errors related to the increase in YH due to the RSM optimization. The optimal parameters, mainly YA, μA, KNH, bA, and kOA, constitute references for other studies on ASM1 modeling using wastewater data from a subtropical climate region. YH optimal value should be evaluated as well as the effect of sludge wastage methods and the simulation periods.

The south of Brazil is one of the largest producers of grapes, and as a consequence there is a large generation of waste that can be used as a profitable alternative source. The aim of this work was to obtain and evaluate oil and the flour for human consumption from the residue of cold-pressed Bordô from conventional and organic grape seeds in a winery in the south of Brazil. By cold pressing, the organic oil obtained higher yield. The quality parameters of the conventional oil were better, although with a higher index of peroxides and iodine. The conventional flour presented better results for quality and centesimal composition, mainly due to the higher fiber content and the fact that it did not contain high acidity or humidity. Therefore, the results of products were similar for both crops, but the conventional one was better. However, traces in the agrochemical residue analysis found for the conventional crop might better qualify the organic products.

This study assesses the influent and effluent characteristics and the removal efficiency of 56 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) operating in Brazil’s southern region, in the Rio Grande do Sul state. The analysis encompasses the main secondary wastewater treatment processes used in the country, such as septic tank and anaerobic filter, activated sludge with sequencing batch reactor and with extended aeration, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor followed by trickling filter, anaerobic and facultative ponds, and the combination of anaerobic, facultative, and maturation ponds. The parameters evaluated were biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammoniacal nitrogen (NNH3), total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS), and Escherichia coli. The influent concentrations of BOD, COD, and TSS were considerably lower than other values reported in studies in Brazil, indicating that the analyzed WWTPs operate with a diluted influent, with respective average ranges of 38–189, 203–416, and 75–242 mg∙L−1. The effluent concentrations were also lower than the reference values, although the differences were not as pronounced as in the influent. No significant distinctions were observed between the removal efficiencies obtained and other results in the literature, except for TSS, which had a weaker performance. Concerning the technologies, lower performance was observed for BOD, COD, and TSS removal in the septic tank and higher removal rates of TP for the activated sludge systems. This study represents the first comprehensive dataset on the performance of WWTPs in Brazil’s southern region, contributing to the understanding of wastewater management practices in the country by indicating potential points for improvement.

The degradation of urban rivers is a phenomenon caused by virtually all cities intersected by rivers. Currently, there is a substantial number of revitalization projects in progress. Nonetheless, their execution demands significant investments, particularly for water quality enhancement. Moreover, apart from the cost factor, the scarcity of space along their banks constrains the implementation of improvement systems. This study introduces a simplified methodology aimed at evaluating the technical feasibility of revitalization interventions within urban river segments, with a focus on enhancing water quality and user experience. The method follows a structured framework encompassing four sequential phases: execution of hydraulic, hydrological, and sanitary analyses concerning the watershed; development of foundational principles and intervention strategies pertaining to the riverbed; appraisal of the congruence between proposed interventions and the intrinsic attributes of the river channel; comprehensive assessment of the overall viability of the revitalization initiative. The method's validation was conducted through a case study involving the Dilúvio Stream in Porto Alegre, RS, showcasing its coherent application and adaptability within the predetermined premises. Thus, the methodology emerges as a preliminary decision-making support tool for projects related to the urban river requalification domain, facilitating the identification of met prerequisites and provision of informed guidance.
