Graphene oxide (GO), derived from the two-dimensional nanosheet graphene, has received unprecedented attention in the field of metal corrosion protection owing to its excellent barrier performance and various active functional groups. In this review, the protection mechanism “labyrinth effect” of composite coatings against metal corrosion was demonstrated systematically. The origination, structure and properties of GO were also analyzed. Their poor dispersion in polymer and tendency to aggregate as nanofillers in composite coatings are the main limitations during application of the coating fillers. In addition, a comprehensive overview on the perspectives of the surface modification of GO and the multi-functionalization of the composite coatings based on GO were given in particular. Green modification methods, reasonable arrangement of GO sheets in composites and development of multi-functional coatings remain challenges in current studies and should be a focus in the future development of GO-based anticorrosive coatings. This review is of value to researchers interested in the design and application of GO in corrosion protection coatings.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as MoS2 have extraordinary properties and significant application potential in electronics, optoelectronics, energy storage, bioengineering, etc. To realize the numerous application potential, it is needed to modulate the structure and properties of these 2D materials, for which ion beam irradiation has obvious advantages. This research adopted classical molecular dynamics simulations to study the sputtering of atoms in 2D MoS2, defect formation and the control rule under Ar ion beam irradiation, considering the influence of ion irradiation parameters (i.e., ion beam energy, ion dose), layer number of 2D MoS2, substrate. Furthermore, the uniaxial mechanical performance of the ion-irradiated nanostructures was investigated for actual applications loading with mechanical stress/strain. This research could provide important theoretical support for fabricating high-performance 2D MoS2-based nanodevices by ion beam irradiation method.

Q235 carbon steel is a commonly used engineering material, but its application in marine environments is limited by its susceptibility to corrosion, especially localized corrosion that can lead to material perforation. Effective inhibitors are crucial to addressing this issue, particularly in acidic environments where localized areas become increasingly acidic. This study reports the synthesis of a new imidazole derivative corrosion inhibitor and evaluates its effectiveness in corrosion inhibition performance using potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. High-resolution optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed for surface morphology analysis. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to explore the protection mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the self-synthesized imidazole derivative corrosion inhibitor offers an excellent corrosion protection performance for Q235 carbon steel in a 3.5 wt. % NaCl acidic solution. This inhibitor can provide a new strategy for carbon steel corrosion protection.

In this study, we investigated the galvanic corrosion performance of an Aluminum–Boron Nitride (Al–BN) abradable seal coating system (with a Ni5Al bond layer and a 0Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb substrate) in chloride solution by electrochemical methods. The results indicated a three-stage process occurred during the anodic dissolution of the coupled coating system, consisting of a spontaneous pitting stage I under charge transfer control with a decreasing rate, a corrosion developing stage II under mass transfer control with an increasing rate, and a final steady stage III. Precipitation of Al(OH)3 restricts the oxygen transport process to the cathode and induces localized acidification of the occluded pores of the Al–BN layer, which was the mechanism that could explain the changes of corrosion performance during the three immersion stages of Al–BN coating system. The study suggests that galvanic corrosion of the porous multi-layer Al–BN abradable coating system is mostly influenced by its corrosion product deposition.

Water-line corrosion is a highly concentrated type of localized corrosion. The conventional single electrode method is limited in its ability to obtain the kinetic information of the corrosion occurrence and development processes. Herein, the coating deterioration and underlying metal corrosion processes in water-line area were studied by a small wire beam electrode to monitor the current density distribution. The distance between each electrode was very small (interval: 0.3 mm), thus facilitating it to approach the practical metal component with a continuous surface. The results showed that cathodic and anodic sites tended to be weak points of the coating at the initial stage. With the continuous degradation of the coating, the cathodic zone tended to occur in the above the anodic zone due to the effect of differential aeration cells (DACs). Subsequently, the cathodic zone expanded to the waterline and the polarity reversed to the anodic zone, causing the coating to peel and blister continuously from the bottom up. When the cathodic zone extended to the gas phase area above the water line, this area became the strongest cathodic zone under the action of the thin liquid film, thus significantly accelerating the corrosion of the base metal at the bottom. The present study aims to achieve an in-depth understanding of coating deterioration and underlying metal corrosion processes in the water-line area, providing a new means of directly visualizing the role of DACs played in water line corrosion.
