Biochar amendments have been used in agriculture to improve soil fertility and enhance crop productivity. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that biochar amendment could also enhance the productivity of salt-affected soils. The trial was conducted over two consecutive growing seasons to investigate the effect of biochar amendment (four application rates as: B1 = 0%, B2 = 2%, B3 = 4%, and B4 = 8% by mass of soil) on yield and quality of tomatoes grown in a silt loam soil using non-saline water (I0 = 0.7 dS m−1) and saline water (I1 = 1 dS m−1; I2 = 3 dS m−1) irrigation. Furthermore, the study investigated the mechanism by which biochar addresses the salt stress on plant. The results showed that soil productivity as indicated by the vegetative growth and tomato yield components was adversely and significantly affected by saline water irrigation (P < 0.05). Tomato yield decreased from 689 ± 35.6 to 533 ± 79.0 g per plant as salinity of irrigation water increased from I0 to I2. Then, biochar amendment increased vegetative growth, yield, and quality parameters under saline irrigation water regimes, and ameliorated the salt stresses on crop growth. The highest (8.73 ± 0.15 and 4.10 ± 0.82 g kg−1) and the lowest (8.33 ± 0.08 and 2.42 ± 0.76 g kg−1) values of soil pH and soil organic matter were measured at B4I0 and B1I2 treatments, respectively. Also, the highest rate of biochar amendment combining with non-saline water irrigation (B4I0) produced tomato with the highest plant photosynthetic (17.08 ± 0.19 μmol m−2 s−1) and transpiration rate (8.16 ± 0.18 mmol H2O m−2 s−1). Mechanically, biochar amendment reduced transient sodium ions by adsorption and released mineral nutrients such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium into the soil solution. Therefore, biochar amendments have the potential in ameliorating salt stress and enhancing tomato production.

The coastline of China is approximately 18,000 km long. In most coastal cities, seawater intrusion is a serious threat to groundwater resources. Nine shallow monitoring wells were constructed to study the dynamics of shallow groundwater level and salinity in the coastal plain region of Jiangsu province, China. Results showed that precipitation, evaporation, and river stage affected the groundwater level in our study area. Positive correlations were observed among the groundwater level, precipitation, and river stage; then negative correlation existed between the groundwater level and evaporation. The influencing factors on the groundwater level were in the order precipitation > river stage > evaporation. Sufficient precipitation during the wet season diluted the groundwater salinity. After the dilution, between two continuous precipitation events, the groundwater salinity increased as the groundwater level decreased. During the dry season, the groundwater salinity rapidly increased and reached its peak in December. The groundwater salinity in December was 23 times higher than that in July. The groundwater level and salinity in this study were generally associated with the season. Climate factors led to fluctuation of groundwater levels and salinity during the wet season, and seawater intrusion increased the groundwater salinity during the dry season.

Water deficiency, together with soil salinization, has been seriously restricting sustainable agriculture around the globe for a long time. Optimal soil moisture regulation contributes to the amelioration of soil water and salinity for crops, which is favorable for plant production. A field experiment with five soil water lower limit levels (T1: 85% FC, T2: 75% FC, T3: 65% FC, T4: 55% FC, and T5: 45% FC, where FC is the field capacity) was conducted in southern Xinjiang in 2018 to investigate the responses of soil water–salt dynamics and cotton performance to soil moisture regulation strategies. The results indicated that in the horizontal direction, the farther away the drip irrigation belt, the lower the soil moisture content and the greater the soil salinity. In the vertical direction, the soil moisture and soil salinity increased first and then decreased with an increase in soil depth after irrigation, and the distribution was similar to an ellipse. Moreover, the humid perimeter of soil water and the leaching range of soil salt increased with a decrease in the soil moisture lower limit. Though more soil salt was leached out for the T5 treatment at the flowering stage due to the higher single irrigation amount, soil salinity increased again at the boll setting stage owing to the long irrigation interval. After the cotton was harvested, soil salt accumulated in the 0–100 cm layer and the accumulation amount followed T3 > T5 > T1 > T2 > T4. Moreover, with a decline of soil moisture lower limit, both plant height and nitrogen uptake decreased significantly while the shoot–root ratio increased. Compared with the yield (7233.2 kg·hm−2) and water use efficiency (WUE, 1.27 kg·m−3) of the T1 treatment, the yield for the T2 treatment only decreased by 1.21%, while the WUE increased by 10.24%. Synthetically, considering the cotton yield, water–nitrogen use efficiency, and soil salt accumulation, the soil moisture lower limit of 75% FC is recommended for cotton cultivation in southern Xinjiang, China.

The sustainability of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation has been threatened by water deficit and nitrogen (N)-fertilizer abuse. Straw return combined with N-fertilizer reduction could be an effective agronomic practice to improve N-use efficiency in rice production, but the interaction with water-saving irrigation regimes remains largely unknown. Here, a 2-year paddy field experiment was conducted to elucidate the effects of irrigation regime (continuously flooded, CF; controlled irrigation and drainage, CID) and straw return with N reduction (conventional farmers’ fertilization practice of 300 kg N ha−1 without straw return, N300; straw return with 25% N reduction, SN225; straw return with 50% N reduction, SN150) on rice growth dynamics, grain yield and water–nitrogen utilization. The results showed that CID significantly affected photosynthesis and fluorescence indicators, and increased grain yield and water productivity of rice. Straw return with N reduction reduced most rice growth traits, exhibiting lower plant height, tillers, leaf photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and dry matter accumulation, especially in vegetative growth under CF. In contrast, SN225 under CID showed compensatory effects on photosynthetic and fluorescence traits, thus improving N uptake during the reproductive growth stage. Despite a 6.6–7.1% yield reduction in SN225, 25% of N-fertilizer input was saved, with a corresponding increase in internal N-use efficiency and N-partial factor productivity. Overall, the present study indicates that straw return combined with moderate N deficiency might be a more eco-friendly and sustainable agronomic practice in water-saving irrigated rice fields.

Effective water and nitrogen (N) management strategies are critical for sustainable agricultural development. Lysimeter experiments with two deep percolation rates (low percolation and high percolation, i.e., LP and HP: 3 mm d−1 and 5 mm d−1) and five N application levels (N0~N4: 0, 60, 135, 210 and 285 kg N ha−1) were conducted to investigate the effects of controlled drainage on water productivity (WP) and N use efficiency (NUE) in water-saving irrigated paddy fields. The results demonstrated that NH4+-N and NO3−-N were the major components of total nitrogen (TN) in ponded water and leachate, accounting for more than 77.1% and 83.6% of TN, respectively. The risk of N leaching loss increased significantly under treatment of high percolation rates or high N application levels. High percolation loss required greater irrigation input, thus reducing WP. In addition, N uptake increased with increasing N application, but fertilization applied in excess of crop demand had a negative effect on grain yield. NUE was affected by the amount of N applied and increased with decreasing N levels. Water and N application levels had a significant effect on N uptake of rice, but their interaction on N uptake or NUE was not significant. For the LP and HP regimes, the highest N uptake and WP were obtained with N application levels of 285 kg ha−1 and 210 kg ha−1, respectively. Our overall results suggested that the combination of controlled drainage and water-saving irrigation was a feasible mitigation strategy to reduce N losses through subdrainage percolation and to provide more nutrients available for rice to improve NUE, thus reducing diffuse agricultural pollution. Long-term field trials are necessary to validate the lysimeter results.

Understanding salinity and fertilizer interaction is of great importance to improve crop production and fertilizer use efficiency in saline areas. To evaluate the interactive effects of different soil salinity levels and nitrogen (N) applications rates on the sunflower photosynthetic characteristics of N uptake and N use efficiency, a two-year field experiment was conducted in Hetao Irrigation District, China. The experiment consisted of three initial salinity (IS) levels expressed as the electrical conductivity of a saturated soil extract (ECe) (S0: 1.72–2.61 dS/m; S1: 4.73–5.90 dS/m; S2: 6.85–9.04 dS/m) and four N rates (45, 90, 135, and 180 kg/ha), referred as N0–N3, respectively. The results indicated that the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) of sunflowers treated with S0 and S1 levels both had a significant decrease in the bud stage, and then reached their maximum at anthesis. However, during the crop cycle, the Pn at S2 level only had small fluctuations and still remained at a high level (>40 μmol CO2/(m2 s)) at the early mature stage. When increasing IS levels from S0 to S1, the plant N uptake (PNU) under the same N rates were only decreased by less than 10% at maturity, whereas the decline was expanded to 17.2–45.7% from S1 to S2. Additionally, though applying the N2 rate could not increase sunflower PNU at the S0 and S1 levels, its N use efficiency was better than those under N3. Meanwhile, at the S2 level, the application of the N0 rate produced a higher N productive efficiency (NPE) and N uptake efficiency (NUPE) than the other N rates. Therefore, our study proposed recommended rates of N fertilizer (S0 and S1: 135 kg/ha, S2: 45 kg/ha) for sunflowers under different saline conditions.
