Prof. Dr. Raja Chinnappan obtained his B.Sc, M.Sc, and Ph.D. from the University of Madras, India. During his Ph.D., he studied polymer dynamics and interpolymer interactions via fluorescence spectroscopy. He moved to Louis-Pasteur University, France, as a Sidaction Postdoctoral Research Fellow to continue his study on the inhibition of chaperone activity of HIV nucleocapsid protein by synthetic peptides using FRET assays. He extended his research on FRET between quantum dots and single-molecule fluorescence microscopy at the Technical University of Chemnitz, Germany. At Kansas State University, USA, he worked on low-temperature (4K) high-resolution fluorescence line-narrowing spectroscopy (FLNS) and capillary electrophoresis to spectroscopically differentiate and electrophoretically separate four diastereomeric anti-BPDE-derived deoxyguanosine (dG) adducts using a monoclonal antibody. Then, he moved to Sherbrooke University, Canada, to work on screening cellular metabolites that change the secondary structure of riboswitch and control gene expressions in pathogenic bacteria. Later, he moved to GDG Environment Inc., Canada, to work on aptamer screening against cyanobacterial toxins for aptasensor design. Finally, he moved to Alfaisal University as a Lecturer. Dr. Chinnappan’s research interest is to develop point-of-care testing biosensors for various diseases.
