Dr. Johann F. Coetzee is a University Distinguished Professor and serves as the  Vice President for Research at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University. He obtained his Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, in 1996. Following graduation, he gained four years of clinical experience in mixed animal practice in Northern Ireland, then spent two years in pharmaceutical research and development at Norbrook Laboratories Ltd. In 2000, he earned a Specialist Certificate in Cattle Health and Production from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London. He completed his Ph.D. at Iowa State University in 2005. As a highly qualified specialist, he holds dual board certifications from both the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology and the American College of Animal Welfare, in addition to being recognized as a European Specialist in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics, and Law. In 2022, he achieved the distinction of becoming one of the youngest faculty members in Kansas State University's history to be named University Distinguished Professor. His primary research focuses on developing innovative pain assessment methods and practical analgesic treatment protocols specifically designed for food animals.
