Thousands of lives are lost every year due to traffic accidents worldwide, and youths are the most affected. The goal of this paper is to analyze the differences in young students’ perceptions about traffic safety in school surroundings in order to help in the formulation of public policies and the development of infrastructure to make school travels safer. A questionnaire was used to obtain the perception of high school students from institutions with different urban characteristics. Data modelling with fuzzy logic and statistical analysis of variance indicated that students’ perceptions are influenced by the different realities these youths are exposed to daily, such as school socioeconomic category, transport mode, urban environment and gender. Traffic engineering measures, public policies and road safety education action, inciting active mobility, can be validated and supported by these results. This road safety analysis may also be a participative alternative for locations with low data access.

The acoustic environment is a crucial factor in learning spaces. Variables such as reverberation time and sound pressure level may interfere with the student’s learning process. In order to guarantee the achievement of acoustic comfort requirements in educational buildings, the design and performance of acoustic conditions should be analyzed from the earliest stages of the project. The analysis of acoustic parameters has usually been performed with specialized software. However, the emergence of the Building Information Modelling (BIM) has represented a new approach to the projects in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction sectors. In this context, the BIM methodology offers one solution to this problem. This study proposes the use of the BIM methodology to improve the acoustic environment of educational buildings. For this purpose, a BIM tool has been developed by the authors to perform a simulation of reverberation time, sound pressure level and critical distance based on the architecture characteristics stored in the BIM model.

Noise pollution has a major impact on society since it causes both occupational and environmental disturbance. Long-term noise exposure may cause adverse health effects in workers. Nowadays, the construction industry is one of the economic activities that generates the most noise pollution. So that the construction industry contributes to sustainable development and minimizes its impact on society, it is necessary to evaluate the noise pollution construction generates. In this context, Building Information Modelling is a new methodology that offers enormous challenges and opportunities for the construction industry. The use of the BIM methodology can be applied to the field of acoustics and noise prevention. The purpose of this study is to propose a BIM tool to assist noise management in construction industry workplaces. This tool is intended as a primary step for providing advice on acoustic management. The results provided can be useful in supporting decision making and strategic plans can be designed to reduce the impact of noise generated by construction activities.

Noise exposure is prevalent in many workplaces; however, not all economic sectors are equally affected. Some construction activities are among the productive processes that cause the most noise pollution. This study aims to provide construction industry practitioners with a better understanding of the impacts of occupational noise to improve the management of construction activities. This research starts from the premise that noise maps can be used for acoustic management in construction workplaces. The noise map is presented as a quantitative tool that supports management by providing information to evaluate the noise safety-related performance of construction activities using a risk-analysis-based approach. For this purpose, the possible use of sound maps as a tool in plans for noise protection where construction activities are taking place is discussed. Noise measurements were collected in a concrete production facility. A noise map has been drawn up and the possibility of using it as part of a strategic plan to protect workers’ health has been analysed.

Traffic crashes in Brazil represent a serious public health problem, representing the second leading cause of death in the country. Recently, a new trend of traffic accidents has been identified in relation to the places where they occur, called “interiorization of traffic accidents”, so that larger cities have decreasing rates of traffic deaths while smaller cities show increasing rates. This paper aims to analyze through a systematic literature review the main publications related to traffic crashes in order to identify the impacts generated by them, their trends, the variables used in studies and analyze studies that address the interiorization of traffic crashes in Brazil. The keywords combinations used in this review resulted in a list of 420 articles, 20 of which were selected based on titles, abstracts, and full texts and subsequently analyzed. Some studies show a change in the victims’ profile following the implementation of the Brazilian Traffic Code, male bikers aged 18 to 29 years, as well as a higher risk of death in cities with less than 100,000 inhabitants.

The transport sector may be major responsible for directing the urban development of cities, however this possibility is overshadowed by the overuse of individual motorized modes of transport. This situation leads to problems such as congestion, accidents, pollution and increased travel times. In this scenario Traffic Engineering aligned with the perspective of sustainable urban planning appears as an essential tool to mitigate these effects., . Studies in this area provide important data such as the number of vehicles traveling in a particular region, as well as their composition, their origins/destinations and their speed of operation. Using this information, obtained from collection and analysis of data through recognized methodologies, urban managers can make decisions about traffic intervention measures aiming to increase traffic safety and efficiency. Therefore, the present article demonstrates the planning for developing a traffic study in a traffic light controlled-intersection of Cachoeira do Sul city, as a result of a cooperation between the Federal University of Santa Maria - Campus Cachoeira do Sul and City Council, also involving practical activities of degree subjects as an active teaching / learning resource.

The Federal University of Santa Maria - Cachoeira do Sul Campus began its activities in 2014 with five graduate courses: Architecture and Urbanism; Agricultural Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; and Transport and Logistics Engineering. The need of technological professionals to meet regional and national demand was considered at the UFSM-Cachoeira do Sul (UFSM-CS) conception. However, the population of Cachoeira do Sul and nearby cities do not know about the courses offered by UFSM-CS. In order to alleviate this problem, the program UFSM-CS goes to Schools is in operation, whose main objective is to present the courses offered by UFSM-CS to high school students in public and private schools. This project has been developed in two stages: in the first stage, a questionnaire about the previous knowledge of the school community about the UFSM campus is applied. In the second stage, a cycle of lectures in public and private schools to show the undergraduate courses in the Cachoeira do Sul campus is done and then a new questionnaire is applied to check if the lecture cycle has indeed encouraged these students to enter UFMS-CS and/or another institution. A statistical analysis of the data obtained through questionnaires is presented to support extension projects with the schools of Cachoeira do Sul and region. Results show that 80% of students intend to enter a higher education institution and 70% do not know which courses are provided by UFSM-CS. After the presentation of the seminars, 92% of the students told the seminars were enlightening.

The demands and challenges currently presented by the labour market in the engineering and architecture areas require future professionals to have a more practical and critical training in order to facilitate problem solving. Thus, it is evident that the traditional methodologies used in these courses need to be modified to enable adequate training beyond theoretical knowledge in the area, such as oral communication, teamwork and group leadership, among others. Project Based Learning (PBL) teaching provides interdisciplinary experiences for students with the aim of strengthening these attitudes, involving students with decision-making projects similar to those experienced in professional life. The objective of this work is to show the experiences of the students of the Federal University of Santa Maria - Campus Cachoeira do Sul in the application of this innovative teaching methodology. As main results, the students developed academic tasks related to real case studies in the scientific-technical area, with the presentation of their work to specialists, report delivery and prototype development. The application of the methodology became satisfactory and motivating, since it stimulated teamwork, integration of engineering and architecture areas, exchange of experiences between students and teachers and integration with the community.

The concept of walkability refers to the extent to which a neighbourhood is walking-friendly. Several walkability indexes have been developed to quantify and evaluate the pedestrian environment. These indexes differ in terms of type of data, methods and goals. The indexes variables may present either uniform or distinct weights, defined by arbitrary, empirical or other diverse weighting methods. This paper pursues the determination of a weighted walkability index, constructed on the basis of the relative importance of their attributes. Weights were determined by the application of the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), a robust multi-criteria method which considers the experts’ uncertainty in decision making. Moreover, FAHP weights were compared with the attribute weights obtained from other simpler methods, and a chi-square test for homogeneity was computed to compare the obtained values. The three most important walkability attributes were: Public Security, Traffic Safety and Pavement Quality, similar results to the ones found in the literature. The application to a case study in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil, allowed categorizing the studied neighbourhoods and to analyse the effect of changes on attributes in walkability.

Highlights•Variables involved in road-noise action plans are ranked.•This ranking allows using a multicriteria methodology for sorting road stretches.•Social choice functions build a consensus based on expert panel results.•Relative-influence analysis of ranked criteria helps managers.•Criteria taking into account the effect on citizens reach the greatest importance. AbstractTraffic noise is gaining importance in planning and operation of roads in developing countries, and particularly in Europe and Latin America. Many variables with different degrees of importance influence the perception of noise from roads. Thus, the problem of prioritizing road stretches for action against such noise is an important issue in environmental noise management. For example, it can be addressed using multicriteria methods. However, these methodologies require criteria or suitable variables to be ranked according to their relative importance. In the present study, for this ranking, a list of nine variables involved in the decision-making process (called “road stretch priority variables”) was presented in the form of questionnaires to high-level experts from Andalusia, southern Spain. These experts ranked the variables by relevance. Using the same data, seven social choice functions (Plurality, Raynaud, Kemeny-Young, Copeland, Simpson, Schulze, and Borda) were used in order to rank the variables. The results indicate that the most important variables were those that take into account the parameters of greatest exposure for the citizens, followed by variables related to the intensity of the problem analyzed. The results show that a combination of the use of social choice functions on aggregated information from expert panels can provide a consensus for ranking priority variables related to road stretches.
