In recent years, deep learning algorithms have been successfully applied in the development of decision support systems in various aspects of agriculture, such as yield estimation, crop diseases, weed detection, etc. Agriculture is the largest consumer of freshwater. Due to challenges such as lack of natural resources and climate change, an efficient decision support system for irrigation is crucial. Evapotranspiration and soil water content are the most critical factors in irrigation scheduling. In this paper, the ability of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Bidirectional LSTM (BLSTM) to model daily reference evapotranspiration and soil water content is investigated. The application of these techniques to predict these parameters was tested for three sites in Portugal. A single-layer BLSTM with 512 nodes was selected. Bayesian optimization was used to determine the hyperparameters, such as learning rate, decay, batch size, and dropout size. The model achieved the values of mean square error values within the range of 0.014 to 0.056 and

Deep learning has already been successfully used in the development of decision support systems in various domains. Therefore, there is an incentive to apply it in other important domains such as agriculture. Fertilizers, electricity, chemicals, human labor, and water are the components of total energy consumption in agriculture. Yield estimates are critical for food security, crop management, irrigation scheduling, and estimating labor requirements for harvesting and storage. Therefore, estimating product yield can reduce energy consumption. Two deep learning models, Long Short-Term Memory and Gated Recurrent Units, have been developed for the analysis of time-series data such as agricultural datasets. In this paper, the capabilities of these models and their extensions, called Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory and Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Units, to predict end-of-season yields are investigated. The models use historical data, including climate data, irrigation scheduling, and soil water content, to estimate end-of-season yield. The application of this technique was tested for tomato and potato yields at a site in Portugal. The Bidirectional Long Short-Term memory outperformed the Gated Recurrent Units network, the Long Short-Term Memory, and the Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Units network on the validation dataset. The model was able to capture the nonlinear relationship between irrigation amount, climate data, and soil water content and predict yield with an MSE of 0.017 to 0.039. The performance of the Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory in the test was compared with the most commonly used deep learning method, the Convolutional Neural Network, and machine learning methods including a Multi-Layer Perceptrons model and Random Forest Regression. The Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory outperformed the other models with an

Introduction. The study assessed musculoskeletal complaints (MSCs) in administrative workers, associating MSCs with non-paid housework, home use of electronic devices and physical exercise, while keeping a distinctive gender approach. This may promote the development of more effective preventive measures, by meeting the specific strengths and weaknesses of each gender. Method. 96 administrative workers (58 women and 38 men) who used computers more than 50% of their working time participated in a cross-sectional study. A questionnaire concerning individual socio-demographic data, habits and lifestyle, and including the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), was deployed. Gender based odd ratios for MSCs in body areas over the previous 12 months and correlation coefficients between habits and lifestyle variables and NMQ variables were computed. Results. Women did not incur a higher risk of MSC than men. Analysis of association did not yield meaningful associations for either gender. Results suggest giving future consideration to development of a gender specific preventive measures. Conclusion. Computerized work performed concomitantly with physical exposures outside the workplace, showed mixed associations with MSCs, according to gender and depending on kind of exposure. Results are indicative of the need for development of gender specific preventive measures.

Cognitive manufacturing utilizes cognitive computing, the industrial Internet of things (IoT), and advanced analytics to upgrade manufacturing processes in manners that were not previously conceivable. It enables associations to improve major business measurements, for example, productivity, product reliability, quality, and safety, while decreasing downtime and lowering costs. Considering all the facts that can prejudice the manufacturing performance in Industry 4.0, the cognitive load has received more attention, since it was previously neglected with respect to manufacturing industries. This paper aims to investigate what causes cognitive load reduction in manufacturing environments, i.e., human–computer interaction technologies that reduce the identified causes and the applications of cognitive manufacturing that use the referred technologies. Thus, a conceptual framework that links cognitive manufacturing to a reduction of the cognitive load was developed.

There are numerous methodologies to measure sustainability, but there are few models on Energy Sustainability (ES) that focus on the proper use of energy sources. This manuscript aims to present the ESUI (Energy Sustainability Universal Index) framework for power generation. The method development consisted of four stages: (i) A survey of the State-of-the-Art to choose the dimensions and variables; (ii) The definition of “damage” concept to incorporate subjective values; (iii) Validation of the found variables through the analysis of 34 electric power plants randomly chosen and tested; and (iv) The mathematical model. From the analyzed power plants through the proposed model, as an example, the Itaipu Binacional Hydroelectric Power Plant is 42% sustainable with an emphasis in the Political-Territorial dimension, while Trillo Nuclear Power Plant is not economically sustainable. The main contributions of the proposed ESUI framework are the classification and evaluation of ES in five dimensions (Environmental, Economic, Social-Cultural, Political-Territorial, and Technological) through a simple process, helping in the management of the decision-making process, accounting simultaneously for subjective aspects and incorporating weighting factors according to the user’s expert opinion.

The Agri-food Industry is the largest Portuguese Industry, constituted mainly by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) conditions in an agri-food MSME have its own characteristics depending on the specific food sector. This condition makes the prevention strategies implementation difficult and heightens the problematic of work accidents. In this chapter are described online and offline free computational tools developed to perform OSH risks assessment in the dairy, meat processing, bakery and horticultural subsectors. The tools provide a simple and expedite diagnostic of occupational hazards and risks. Depending on the input data, the tools output identifies successful practices and easy-to-implement solutions for occupational risk prevention. These computational tools aim to empower Portuguese agri-food SMEs to implement innovative OSH management practices in order to prevent work accidents.

The goal of most companies is to increase the productivity minimizing the resources' usage. In this sense, Lean Production (LP) is one of the major concepts in the creation of highly efficient processes since the early 1990s, having successfully challenged conventional mass-production practices, reducing non-value-added activities, and delivering quality products focused on customers' satisfaction. Nonetheless, with the latest technologies changes and markets requirements, companies have to led with the emergence of innovative management and production methodologies in order to achieve the necessary flexibility to survive in highly competitive environments. The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the related Industry 4.0 technologies are driving the current manufacturing systems to a new level of organizational development. This manuscript focuses on the work that has been developed by the Group of Industrial Engineering and Management (GIEM) from University of Beira Interior, Portugal, aiming to fill the gap in the broad body of knowledge fields related with operation and management. The theoretical background of LP is summarized, followed by a survey conducted in 87 manufacturing companies located in Angola. Then, an Industry 4.0 overview highlights are summarized. Lastly, it is explored how LP and Industry 4.0 integration can contribute to increasing the desirable flexibility and productivity. Although the results are in progress, so far, it is suggested that the implementation of LP and Industry 4.0 concepts in Angola are not being uniformed in terms of companies' size and geography, which is in line with the available literature.

Inspection has been always a topic of interest in the industrial environment. Indeed, the inspection process is particularly very essential for controlling the quality of the finished products. Within this context, in this work is proposed an automated artificial vision system in order to control the non-conformities in vehicles. In fact, the main idea of the proposed system resides in the adoption of the Artificial Intelligence (AI), in order to identify automatically the defects, while supporting at the same time the concept of a smart industry 4.0. Moreover, some works, which rely on AI for quality control inspection in smart industries, are briefly reviewed in this paper, in order to highlight the issues of Visual Inspection (VI) as well as to prove the effectiveness of the AI in industries, notably those related to vehicle manufacturing.

Industry 4.0 promises to revolutionize industrial production with increased operational efficiency, the development of new business models, services and products. It enables real-time production planning and dynamic optimization in contrast to conventional forecast. The tools and technological advances developed by Industry 4.0 will have a significant role to improving the quality of life in society in order to enable a happier, motivated, and satisfied and with more time for leisure. As a consequence, it will increase productivity and the mankind will choose the direction and the kind of society we want to create in the future to promote equal wealth distribution. As consequence of Industry 4.0 emerges Society 5.0, beginning in Japan, due to the concern of the ageing population. Society 5.0 focuses on the use of tools and technologies developed by Industry 4.0 to benefit the humankind. Intelligent systems, developed by Industry 4.0, could be seen by society as a beneficial rather than as adversaries. Future society could benefit from advanced technology in solving problems and economically. Society 5.0 has a special focus to position the human being at the centre of innovation, technological transformation and industrial automation, stimulated by Industry 4.0. This new Society 5.0 paradigm will play a predominant role in creating a happier, satisfied, fulfilled and consequently more productive society. Society 5.0, also called the super intelligent society, intends to use advanced technology of Industry 4.0 for enjoyment of humankind, in order to promote an interconnection between people and systems in cyberspace with optimization of results by artificial intelligence.

In the XX century, arises the mass production implemented by Henry Ford to overcome the period of crisis lived in the World. In 1988, the term Lean emerged and this philosophy successfully challenged the mass production implemented in the automotive industry, focused on customers’ requirements and satisfaction with the minimum use of resources and waste elimination. A Lean environment can be a promoter in the implementation of the fourth industrial revolution, named Industry 4.0 (I4.0). In the succession of Industry 4.0 emerged the Society 5.0 in Japan, as a strategy to deal with the impact of an ageing population. The focus of this quiet revolution is the humankind and the creation of conditions to promote a happy, motivated and satisfied society with more time for leisure and consequently increase productivity and wealth. This article presents a historical approach to the technological evolution of productive systems, and their influence on societies.

In most real cases the problem of scheduling operations are sequence dependent, that is, the setup time depends on the sequencing of tasks/batches in the machine. Given the current industrial manufacturing trends and requirements such as high variability, customization and reduction of product life cycles, organizations seek to implement new methodologies to adapt and respond with more flexibly to new demands of the global markets. Thus, this work sought to analyse, inspired by a real case of the textile industry, how production scheduling can be understood as a complement to SMED in order to achieve productivity improvement. In the case under analysis we presented the problem of scheduling tasks in uniform parallel machines with sequence-dependent setup times. The main objective of this work was to minimize the total production time. To this goal, optimization heuristics were used, in this case, simulated annealing algorithm, that demonstrated how the use of heuristics can be an advantage to reduce setup times when associated with other methodologies such as SMED.

A participatory ergonomics program enables a company to engage employees in its preventive strategy. This paper presents [email protected], an integrated methodology devised for promoting continuous implementation of preventive measures while monitoring their effectiveness over time in a participatory manner. It consists of a straightforward and cost-effective resource which is primarily aimed at supporting the identification of the need for implementation of interventions for strategic prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. As a practitioner tool, [email protected] guides the deployment of a participatory approach to ergonomics in both the analysis as well as in the intervention phase. The implementation of the measures envisaged in this planning support framework result from teamwork between the OSHS (Occupational Health and Safety Services) and the employee whose work is under focus. The implemented measures should then be monitored, which will enable assessing their effectiveness and their adjustment to the labour setting in an up-to-date manner.

The evolution of information and communication technologies and its introduction into production processes are transforming traditional industry, bringing it to a new level of organizational development. In order to avail the benefits of these technologies to strengthen competitiveness in the global market, a new paradigm is being discussed worldwide. Industry 4.0 or 4th Industrial Revolution are some of the terms used to describe the implementation of “smart” devices that can communicate autonomously along the value chain. In this approach, machines use self-optimization, self-configuration, and artificial intelligence to provide better quality goods and services. In this context, the overall goal of the study is to intensify the discussion and provide a state-of-art of Industry 4.0 in order to show how combination of advanced technologies and internet can create new opportunities to overcome the current and future industrial challenges.

In face of the pressures exerted by the globalization of the markets and the needs to meet the expectations of consumers, companies seek to improve their organizations at different levels. To meet these requirements and survive in increasingly dynamic scenarios, companies must be aware that they can not to be more static and they must adapt to gain competitive strength. In this context, the study of the industrial layout assumes an important role integrating all the elements involved in the production process. Thus, this article intends to demonstrate the relevance of the thematic study. To this objective, we present a case study layout of a manufacturing wood-based, with a proposal for improvement based on the SLP – systematic layout planning, method, combined with practical considerations and constraints, discussed here, and presents in industrial facilities.

Kaizen is one of the continuous improvement management tools encompassed by Lean Manufacturing. 5S methodology is a reorganization technique for the companies generally associated with Kaizen technique. It was specifically developed with the aim of transforming the environment of people’s organizations and attitudes, resulting in improvement of employees’ quality of life and the reduction of waste and costs, and aiming significant increases in productivity. Portuguese food industry is composed mainly by Small and Medium Enterprises that are now implementing new information and communication technologies and electronics. In order to promote their efficiency the SME should update their computational tools to support scenario creation that are used to ease the decision-making, so they are able to adapt rapidly to an increasingly computerized industry named as Industry 4.0. It is presented a computational tool to facilitate and implement a new culture of business management directed to agrifood SME, that aims to improve the organization and Occupational Safety and Health.

Participatory ergonomics programs engage employees in preventive strategies. [email protected] is an integrated methodology for continuously implementing preventive measures while participatorily monitoring their effectiveness. [email protected] is directed towards computerized workplaces and aims identification and assessment of ergonomic risks, job psychosocial factors, musculoskeletal complaints and symptoms of disorders and individual characteristics and habits. This is followed by design and implementation of an intervention action plan. Initially, an occupational health and safety technician (HST) applies the risk factor identification methodology. The objective of the training that ensues is to capacitate and enable workers to propose an intervention plan for their work. To this follows application of suitable risk assessment methods to situations where ergonomic mismatches were detected by the HST. Finally, preventive and corrective measures to be implemented in each job, are devised in an ergonomic intervention plan for each employee. Monitoring of implemented measures enables assessing their effectiveness and their up-to-date adjustment.
