The study of nonlinear vibrations/oscillations in mechanical and electronic systems has always been an important research area. While important progress in the development of mathematical chaos theory has been made for finite dimensional second order nonlinear ODEs arising from nonlinear springs and electronic circuits, the state of understanding of chaotic vibrations for analogous infinite dimensional systems is still very incomplete. The 1-dimensional vibrating string satisfying w t t − w x x = 0 w_{tt}- w_{xx}=0 on the unit interval x ∈ ( 0 , 1 ) x \in (0,1) is an infinite dimensional harmonic oscillator. Consider the boundary conditions: at the left end x = 0 x=0 , the string is fixed, while at the right end x = 1 x=1 , a nonlinear boundary condition w x = α w t − β w t 3 , α , β > 0 w_{x}= \alpha w_t - \beta w_{t}^{3}, \alpha , \beta >0 , takes effect. This nonlinear boundary condition behaves like a van der Pol oscillator, causing the total energy to rise and fall within certain bounds regularly or irregularly. We formulate the problem into an equivalent first order hyperbolic system, and use the method of characteristics to derive a nonlinear reflection relation caused by the nonlinear boundary condition. Since the solution of the first order hyperbolic system depends completely on this nonlinear relation and its iterates, the problem is reduced to a discrete iteration problem of the type u n + 1 = F ( u n ) u_{n+1}=F(u_n) , where F F is the nonlinear reflection relation. We say that the PDE system is chaotic if the mapping F F is chaotic as an interval map. Algebraic, asymptotic and numerical techniques are developed to tackle the cubic nonlinearities. We then define a rotation number, following J.P. Keener [J.P. Keener, Chaotic behavior in piecewise continuous difference equations, Transactions Amer. Math. Soc., 261 (1980), 589–604], and obtain denseness of orbits and periodic points by either directly constructing a shift sequence or by applying results of M.I. Malkin [M.I. Malkin, Rotation intervals and the dynamics of Lorenz type mappings, Selecta Math. Sovietica 10(3) (1991), 265–275] to determine the chaotic regime of α \alpha for the nonlinear reflection relation F F , thereby rigorously proving chaos. Nonchaotic cases for other values of α \alpha are also classified. Such cases correspond to limit cycles in nonlinear second order ODEs. Numerical simulations of chaotic and nonchaotic vibrations are illustrated by computer graphics.

The monotone iteration scheme is a constructive method for solving a wide class of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems. With the availability of a supersolution and a subsolution, the iterates converge monotonically to one or two solutions of the nonlinear PDE. However, the rates of such monotone convergence cannot be determined in general. In addition, when the monotone iteration scheme is implemented numerically through the boundary element method, error estimates have not been analyzed in earlier studies. In this paper, we formulate a working assumption to obtain an exponentially fast rate of convergence. This allows a margin δ \delta for the numerical implementation of boundary elements within the range of monotone convergence. We then interrelate several approximate solutions, and use the Aubin-Nitsche lemma and the triangle inequalities to derive error estimates for the Galerkin boundary-element iterates with respect to the H r ( Ω ) H^{r}(\Omega ) , 0 ≤ r ≤ 2 0\le r \le 2 , Sobolev space norms. Such estimates are of optimal order. Furthermore, as a peculiarity, we show that for the nonlinearities that are of separable type, “higher than optimal order” error estimates can be obtained with respect to the mesh parameter h h . Several examples of semilinear elliptic partial differential equations featuring different situations of existence/nonexistence, uniqueness/multiplicity and stability are discussed, computed, and the graphics of their numerical solutions are illustrated.

We present a circuit design realizing Grover’s algorithm based on 1-bit unitary gates and 2-bit quantum phase gates implementable with cavity QED techniques. In the first step, we express the circuit block which performs a key unitary transformation that flips only the sign of the state |11 · · · 11〉 using 1-bit and 2-bit gates. The Grover’s iteration operator can then be constructed using this key unitary transformation twice, plus other operations involving only 1-bit unitary gates on each qubit. Mathematical proofs are given to justify that the cricuiting satisfies the desired operator properties.

In this paper, we study a model of insect and animal dispersal where both density-dependent diffusion and nonlinear rate of growth are present. We analyze the existence of bounded traveling wave solution under certain parametric conditions by using the qualitative theory of dynamical systems. An explicit traveling wave solution is obtained by means of the first integral method. Traveling wave solutions in parametric forms for three particular cases are established by the Lie symmetry method.
