Biography

I'm a biomedical researcher in the Research Division of Hospital Juárez de México. I teach and mentor graduate students in Health Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biostatistics, and Research Methodology. My research is in molecular oncology (cervical cancer, gastric carcinogenesis) and translational molecular diagnostics. The projects I'm currently involved in look at the role of tryptophan catabolising enzymes in cervical cancer; the link between H. pylori infection and vitamin D levels and gastric disease; and the potential contribution of coinfection with H. pylori, S. anginosus and F. nucleatum to gastric inflammation, precancerous lesions and gastric cancer. My scientific experience also includes work on the molecular mechanisms of HPV-associated carcinogenesis (particularly oncogenic signalling pathways) and the development of molecular approaches for pathogen detection. My current research interests are in the area of low cost molecular diagnostic microchips, the identification of antibiotic resistance associated mutations and the integration of machine learning and bioinformatics into precision diagnostics. As a researcher and educator my professional mission is to take fundamental molecular discoveries and translate them into clinical applications, to advance translational biomedical research, to promote interdisciplinary scientific collaboration and to train the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals in how to use research to improve human health.
