Harris hawk optimization (HHO) is one of the recently proposed metaheuristic algorithms that has proven to be work more effectively in several challenging optimization tasks. However, the original HHO is developed to solve the continuous optimization problems, but not to the problems with binary variables. This paper proposes the binary version of HHO (BHHO) to solve the feature selection problem in classification tasks. The proposed BHHO is equipped with an S-shaped or V-shaped transfer function to convert the continuous variable into a binary one. Moreover, another variant of HHO, namely quadratic binary Harris hawk optimization (QBHHO), is proposed to enhance the performance of BHHO. In this study, twenty-two datasets collected from the UCI machine learning repository are used to validate the performance of proposed algorithms. A comparative study is conducted to compare the effectiveness of QBHHO with other feature selection algorithms such as binary differential evolution (BDE), genetic algorithm (GA), binary multi-verse optimizer (BMVO), binary flower pollination algorithm (BFPA), and binary salp swarm algorithm (BSSA). The experimental results show the superiority of the proposed QBHHO in terms of classification performance, feature size, and fitness values compared to other algorithms.

Due to the increment in hand motion types, electromyography (EMG) features are increasingly required for accurate EMG signals classification. However, increasing in the number of EMG features not only degrades classification performance, but also increases the complexity of the classifier. Feature selection is an effective process for eliminating redundant and irrelevant features. In this paper, we propose a new personal best (Pbest) guide binary particle swarm optimization (PBPSO) to solve the feature selection problem for EMG signal classification. First, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) decomposes the signal into multiresolution coefficients. The features are then extracted from each coefficient to form the feature vector. After which pbest-guide binary particle swarm optimization (PBPSO) is used to evaluate the most informative features from the original feature set. In order to measure the effectiveness of PBPSO, binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO), genetic algorithm (GA), modified binary tree growth algorithm (MBTGA), and binary differential evolution (BDE) were used for performance comparison. Our experimental results show the superiority of PBPSO over other methods, especially in feature reduction; where it can reduce more than 90% of features while keeping a very high classification accuracy. Hence, PBPSO is more appropriate for application in clinical and rehabilitation applications.

Features extracted from the electromyography (EMG) signal normally consist of irrelevant and redundant features. Conventionally, feature selection is an effective way to evaluate the most informative features, which contributes to performance enhancement and feature reduction. Therefore, this article proposes a new competitive binary grey wolf optimizer (CBGWO) to solve the feature selection problem in EMG signals classification. Initially, short-time Fourier transform (STFT) transforms the EMG signal into time-frequency representation. Ten time-frequency features are extracted from the STFT coefficient. Then, the proposed method is used to evaluate the optimal feature subset from the original feature set. To evaluate the effectiveness of proposed method, CBGWO is compared with binary grey wolf optimization (BGWO1 and BGWO2), binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO), and genetic algorithm (GA). The experimental results show the superiority of CBGWO not only in classification performance, but also feature reduction. In addition, CBGWO has a very low computational cost, which is more suitable for real world application.

Feature selection is a task of choosing the best combination of potential features that best describes the target concept during a classification process. However, selecting such relevant features becomes a difficult matter when large number of features are involved. Therefore, this study aims to solve the feature selection problem using binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO). Nevertheless, BPSO has limitations of premature convergence and the setting of inertia weight. Hence, a new co-evolution binary particle swarm optimization with a multiple inertia weight strategy (CBPSO-MIWS) is proposed in this work. The proposed method is validated with ten benchmark datasets from UCI machine learning repository. To examine the effectiveness of proposed method, four recent and popular feature selection methods namely BPSO, genetic algorithm (GA), binary gravitational search algorithm (BGSA) and competitive binary grey wolf optimizer (CBGWO) are used in a performance comparison. Our results show that CBPSO-MIWS can achieve competitive performance in feature selection, which is appropriate for application in engineering, rehabilitation and clinical areas.

To date, the usage of electromyography (EMG) signals in myoelectric prosthetics allows patients to recover functional rehabilitation of their upper limbs. However, the increment in the number of EMG features has been shown to have a great impact on performance degradation. Therefore, feature selection is an essential step to enhance classification performance and reduce the complexity of the classifier. In this paper, a hybrid method, namely, binary particle swarm optimization differential evolution (BPSODE) was proposed to tackle feature selection problems in EMG signals classification. The performance of BPSODE was validated using the EMG signals of 10 healthy subjects acquired from a publicly accessible EMG database. First, discrete wavelet transform was applied to decompose the signals into wavelet coefficients. The features were then extracted from each coefficient and formed into the feature vector. Afterward, BPSODE was used to evaluate the most informative feature subset. To examine the effectiveness of the proposed method, four state-of-the-art feature selection methods were used for comparison. The parameters, including accuracy, feature selection ratio, precision, F-measure, and computation time were used for performance measurement. Our results showed that BPSODE was superior, in not only offering a high classification performance, but also in having the smallest feature size. From the empirical results, it can be inferred that BPSODE-based feature selection is useful for EMG signals classification.
