A large percentage of traffic accidents are due to human errors. Driving behavior and driving stress influence the probability of making these mistakes. Both are influenced by multiple factors, among which might be elements such as age, gender, sleeping hours, or working hours. The objective of this paper is to study, in a real scenario and without forcing the driver’s state, the relationship between driving behavior, driving stress, and these elements. Furthermore, we aim to provide guidelines to improve driving assistants. In this study, we used 1050 driving samples obtained from 35 volunteers. The driving samples correspond to regular commutes from home to the workplace. ANOVA and ANCOVA tests were carried out to check if there are significant differences in the four factors analyzed. Although the results show that driving behavior and driving stress are affected by gender, age, and sleeping hours, the most critical variable is working hours. Drivers with long working days suffer significantly more driving stress compared to other drivers, with the corresponding effect on their driving style. These drivers were the worst at maintaining the safety distance.

The transport network and mobility aspects are constantly changing, and major changes are expected in the coming years in terms of safety and sustainability purposes. In this paper, we present the main conclusions and analysis of data collected from a survey of drivers in Spain and Portugal regarding user preferences, highlighting the main functionalities and behavior that an advanced driver assistance system must have in order to grant it special importance on the road to prevent accidents and also to enable drivers to have a pleasant journey. Based on the results obtained from the survey, we developed and present a working prototype for an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), its architecture and rules systems that allowed us to create and test some scenarios in a real environment.

Road accidents and safe driving are one of the main concerns of transportation systems and the companies that explore different solutions to reduce the accident rate. The most interesting option to achieve this goal is through an on-board training of professional drivers to apply safe driving techniques during their work activity. The purpose of this study is to analyze a monitoring system that is not limited to the real-time vehicle tracking but is also capable of monitoring and providing real-time feedback and in-vehicle training. We analyze the influence of different sociodemographic factors on driving behavior. The analyzed data correspond to an urban public transport company, obtained from a study performed on 246 drivers. The drivers received training based on a blended learning system with an on-board feedback device, accompanied by both theoretical and practical sessions. The driving behavior of each driver is obtained from the data gathered from the vehicles that allow us to characterize their driving patterns. The information related to safe driving is completed with a list of the records of road accidents. The results of the sociodemographic influence on driving behavior provide significant information, giving an elaborated classification of safety driving patterns in order to apply intelligent transportation systems.

Globalization has increased the number of road trips and vehicles. The result has been an intensification of traffic accidents, which are becoming one of the most important causes of death worldwide. Traffic accidents are often due to human error, the probability of which increases when the cognitive ability of the driver decreases. Cognitive capacity is closely related to the driver’s mental state, as well as other external factors such as the CO2 concentration inside the vehicle. The objective of this work is to analyze how these elements affect driving. We have conducted an experiment with 50 drivers who have driven for 25 min using a driving simulator. These drivers completed a survey at the start and end of the experiment to obtain information about their mental state. In addition, during the test, their stress level was monitored using biometric sensors and the state of the environment (temperature, humidity and CO2 level) was recorded. The results of the experiment show that the initial level of stress and tiredness of the driver can have a strong impact on stress, driving behavior and fatigue produced by the driving test. Other elements such as sadness and the conditions of the interior of the vehicle also cause impaired driving and affect compliance with traffic regulations.

Interest in energy cost saving and in global warming have persuaded transport companies to apply measures to reduce fuel consumption. Efficient driving is one of the most employed solutions as it allows savings in fuel consumption of around 10% with a minimal investment. The drawback is that efficient driving is a learning process, and it greatly depends on the drivers' behavior, which in turn is closely related to their motivation. If drivers are not really involved or after some time their interest decreases, efficiency improvements would disappear. Thus, an efficient driving program should make drivers' motivation one of the main targets. One option could be the implementation of reward programs. However, these should be based on a clear individual evaluation process, as an unfair system could lead to discomfort, complaints, and repudiation. In this paper, we propose an analytic system, based on the detection of efficient and inefficient behavioral patterns, to evaluate the individual driver's progression in efficient driving with the aim of being the basis of a reward program. The system receives relevant, driving related, vehicle information every 1.5 s, allowing a precise searching of patterns. It has been tested successfully in 16 bus companies, analyzing the performance of 880 professional drivers. To accurately illustrate the analytic process, three detailed driver analyses have been included as a case study. Results of this applied research on the eco-driving field show that the proposed system identifies efficient and inefficient actions that are used to fairly evaluate the drivers' performance.

Diesel engines of the vehicles in the transport sector are responsible for most of the CO2 emissions into the environment. An alternative to reduce fuel consumption is to promote efficient driving techniques. The aim of this paper is to assess the impact of efficient driving on fuel consumption in professional fleets. Data captured from the engine control unit (ECU) of the vehicles are complemented with external information from weather stations and context data from the transport companies. The paper proposes linear and quadratic models in order to quantify the impact of all the terms influencing energy consumption. The analysis was made from the traces captured from a passenger transport company in Spain with more than 50 bus routes. 20 vehicles of five different models were monitored and 58 drivers participated in the study. The results indicate that efficient driving has significant influence on fuel consumption, which confirms efficient driving as a valid and economical option for reducing consumption and therefore emissions of harmful particles into the atmosphere. According to the proposed model, in average external conditions, a driver that increases efficiency from 25% to 75% can reach savings in fuel consumption of up to 16 L/100 km in the analysed bus fleet, which is a significant improvement considering the long distances covered by professionals of the transport sector.

In recent years, the number of on-board devices that provide information about the vehicle, the driving process and the environment has increased. Nevertheless, these devices can be very distracting. Head-up display devices (HUDs) and speech recognition may be good technologies to enrich the experience of drivers while keeping safety under control. Thus, the purpose of this study is to carry out an evaluation of these technologies under real conditions. A total of 50 drivers participated in a study divided into two parts. In the first part, we performed an evaluation of the usage of driving assistants with HUD devices under real conditions. We also compared HUDs with conventional head-down display (HDD) screens. Finally, we asked users about their opinion on methods of interaction with HUDs. Considering the results, the second part of the study aimed at evaluating interaction with HUD devices using speech recognition. 65% of the drivers prefer to use HUDs instead of HDDs for safety reasons. Furthermore, the participants prefer to interact with HUDs using voice commands. 86.66% of the users stated that this method of interaction improved their feeling of safety. The main conclusion is that users agree that driving assistants combined with HUDs are useful and safe at the same time. Moreover, the interaction with HUDs through voice commands is accepted by the majority of the users; it improves their sensation of safety because they do not need to look away from the road to use driving assistants.

En el corto plazo, la industria del robot autónomo y de los drones será un factor de desarrollo importante. Tanto la fabricación de los propios dispositivos, como del desarrollo del software que los hace funcionar serán actividades empresariales de importancia en el sector TIC. No obstante, el futuro de los robots de trabajo autónomo es colaborar unos con otros y con el entorno que los rodea (adaptación al contexto). Para ello, deben de ser capaces de interactuar con otros equipos mediante protocolos de comunicación y sistemas de razonamiento. Por ello, en este trabajo se presenta una experiencia encaminada a la obtención de un sistema de trabajo colaborativo para que un grupo/enjambre de robots autónomos de limpieza puedan trabajar de forma conjunta. La experiencia se basa en un laboratorio abierto que permite a los alumnos proponer y realizar sus propios desarrollos. En el trabajo se presentan tanto los aspectos metodológicos de la experiencia, como los avances que se han conseguido realizar hasta la fecha.

Public transport companies face great expenses. In order to be profitable companies, they need to reduce costs in all aspects. In addition, many countries have increased taxes to force transport companies to reduce their fuel consumption and, thus, greenhouse effect emissions. Efficient driving is the cheapest way to achieve this goal. In this paper, we analyze the economic impact of one of the most influential efficient driving techniques in an urban bus company. We calculate the difference of consumption between a well-performed deceleration using the inertia of the vehicle and a loss of speed obtained by using the brakes. For this purpose, we compare a real track performed by any driver in a precise vehicle with a simulated ideal track. To obtain the deceleration of the simulation, we develop a linear regression model on over 170,000 samples captured from the same vehicle over a period of one month. The results show that the costs of the vehicle under test in one month may be reduced by more than2500€

Efficient driving has been positioned as the most popular alternative to reduce air pollution and obtain fuel savings. However, efficient driving requires a continuous learning process in order to prevent users reverting to their original habits. To facilitate the learning process, on-board tutoring systems have appeared. In this study, the authors analyse in detail the impact of two types of such eco-feedback devices on driver's behaviour. The evaluated tutoring systems include information related to the optimal engaged gear, but also related to other safety and comfort parameters. Their analysis is based on one of the largest and heterogeneous population groups of non-professional drivers who have participated in experiments with feedback devices specifically designed to achieve more efficient driving. A total number of 158 volunteers participated in the experiments covering periods of time between 3 and 11 months and using the feedback devices during their daily routine. Results show that, in general, users evolve positively following the eco-driving recommendations throughout the duration of the experiments. In addition, there are significant differences in the use of the tutoring system depending on the type of route, the time of day and other factors such as age or gender.

The emergence of social activities on the Internet in conjunction with the popularization of multimedia services has facilitated the development of collaborative services for Social TV. Interactive services with multimedia contents are critical because of the high consumption of resources in the communication networks. For this reason, interactive games for the Social TV pose an important test in order to evaluate the performance of these collaborative services over IP-based networks. We have designed a multiuser interactive game based on answering questions with bidirectional data, audio and video. The traffic generated has been analyzed, statistically characterized and used to develop and validate a simulation model of the online game. Results of the simulation demonstrate the accuracy of the designed model and the high consumption of network resources of the service in massive deployments with a high number of active users. The proposed model can be used to evaluate both service performance, and resources consumption in heterogeneous networks, with different policies of content distribution in massive deployments of the online game service. The integration of the simulation model with the real TV service will also allow us to evaluate the quality of experience of the users in hybrid scenarios of emulation.

Scalable streaming has emerged as a feasible solution to resolve users' heterogeneity problems. SVC is the technology that has served as the definitive impulse for the growth of streaming adaptive systems. Systems seek to improve layer switching efficiency from the network point of view but, with increasing importance, without jeopardizing user perceived video quality, i.e., QoE. We have performed extensive subjective experiments to corroborate the preference towards adaptive systems when compared to traditional non-adaptive systems. The resulting subjective scores are correlated with most relevant Full Reference (FR) objective metrics. We obtain an exponential relationship between human decisions and the same decisions expressed as a difference of objective metrics. A strong correlation with subjective scores validates objective metrics to be used as aid in the adaptive decision taking algorithms to improve overall systems performance. Results show that, among the evaluated objective metrics, PSNR is the metric that provide worse results in terms of reproducing the human decisions.

HTTP Video streaming has become a strong candidate for video transmission on the Internet thanks to the abundance of web infrastructure. With the recent standardization of the new MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), the flexibility and implantation of adaptive video systems has increased due to the fact that DASH can operate on a conventional web infrastructure. In this paper we propose an estimation and adaptation system for DASH. The proposed adaptive algorithm is based on client buffer threshold and smooth throughput measures (based on the throughput of previous segments). Before DASH, the standard of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) also arose from the idea of adaptation. Both systems (adaptive system based on SVC and the proposed system for DASH) are compared in terms of Video Quality (VQ) metrics. The results show that the proposed system reacts properly to changes in the network capacity, while maintaining a minimum level of segments in the buffer. The user-perceived quality is better than in the SVC-based adaptive system although the generated traffic is higher.

UrVAMM is a revolutionary system for environmental-urban monitoring in the next smart cities scenario. UrVAMM is constructing a new technology to be integrated in professional fleets of vehicles such as urban buses, garbage trucks, personal vehicles, etc. Based on the combination of two well-established technologies from Ingenieros Asesores and ADN Mobile Solutions. UrVAMM has two key objectives: a) to complement air quality monitoring in cities and b) reduction of emissions by efficient driving actions. UrVAMM is fully aligned with the new paradigm opened by the smartcity concept complying with secure, private, open and friendly data available for citizens and stakeholders. UrVAMM goes beyond the current state of art in air quality monitoring due to its innovative integration in service vehicles and its indicators in efficient driving. UrVAMM is being designed and tested under government funding and the collaboration of Gijón and Valencia bus fleets and councils.

For many years video content delivery has established itself as the killer application. Improving QoE on adaptive streaming is focusing many efforts in the quest for optimized methods and metrics to allow a QoE driven adaptation. Questions such as whether adaptive systems based on Scalable Video Coding improve subjective quality and in which situations or to what degree are still open issues. Tolerance and indifference thresholds for each type of content, conditions or viewer category, with regard to adaptive systems are critical success factors that are yet unresolved. We compare the performance of a complete adaptive system with the traditional, i.e. non-adaptive, approach in subjective terms. Results of surveying 75 participants show that the adaptation improves QoE under most of the evaluated conditions. Tolerance thresholds for triggering adaptation events have been identified. Users accustomed to Internet video are more critical than users that only watch TV. The under 35 year old subset among the available population is generally more satisfied with the adaptive system than the older subset.

One of the sectors that currently generates pollution is road transport. Every day, millions of tons of CO 2 are released into the atmosphere because of this type of human activity. Governments see the reduction of such emissions as a priority-which, according to various studies, could be achieved through more efficient driving. This paper presents a driver tutoring system based on active learning and ubiquity paradigms. Through visual and auditory recommendations, we are able to help drivers achieve more efficient driving. This system is complemented with a Web portal where drivers can check their driving and receive recommendations for further improvement. To evaluate the performance of the tutoring system, driving is monitored and analyzed over a period of six weeks with 150 volunteer drivers achieving results that improved efficient driving metrics and consumption by ~ 10%.

Content adaptation to a heterogeneous environment like the Internet is a key process for improving the perceived quality of the user. This paper presents an adaptive streaming system using Scalable Video Coding (SVC) technology. Using feedback information from clients about the transmission status, the server is able to select the most suitable combination of SVC layers for the available bandwidth. The estimation of the available bandwidth is carried out with non-intrusive methods, based on classic metrics such as packet loss, jitter and novel metrics like the linearity of reception times of RTP packets. The system is implemented in real equipment and the results show the correct operation and the accuracy of the system when adapting to different variations of the available bandwidth. We also study the scalability of the system when several clients access the service simultaneously, demonstrating that our system is as scalable as a non-adaptive system with SVC.
