Biography

Dr. Adrian Boyd was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Biomaterials in 2011 at Ulster University and has research interests in calcium phosphate biomaterials, sputter deposited calcium phosphate coatings, resorbable magnesium alloys and additive manufacturing. Adrian was awarded his primary degree in Applied Biochemical Sciences in 1996 from The Faculty of Science (Ulster University) and then received his PhD in Biomaterials Science from the Faculty of Computing and Engineering (Ulster University) in 2000. He spent a period in Industry working on the development of Raman spectrometers with Avalon Instruments before returning to Ulster University in 2003. He is a leading member of the Biomaterials, interfaces and Tissue Engineering (BITE) Research Cluster within the Nanotechnology and Integrated Bioengineering Centre (NIBEC), part of the School of Engineering at Ulster University. He is currently treasurer and a council member of the UK Society for Biomaterials (UKSB), He is also a full Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a past president, secretary and treasurer of the Northern Ireland Biomedical Engineering Society (NIBES). Recent funded work is in the area of 3D printing of high temperature thermoplastics, 3D Bioprinting for Cardiac Tissue, the coating of resorbable magnesium alloys for orthopaedics and the development of biomedical sensors. He has extensive experience in XPS, ToFSIMS, FTIR, Raman and XRD.
