Field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of a model predictive control with constant switching frequency (MPC-CSF) for a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is proposed. The basic finite states MPC (FS-MPC) can be combined with a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) modulator because of an effective cost function optimization algorithm in which voltage vectors are dynamically selected and calculated through iteration based on the idea similar to dichotomy. Using model-based design (MBD), MPC-CSF is implemented on an FPGA with parallel and pipeline processing techniques in short execution time. Functionality simulation analysis presents that MPC-CSF is much robust to parameter variations. Experimental results illustrate that MPC-CSF has good dynamic performance for PMSM drives.

Surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine with concentrated windings (cwSPMSM) is a high-performance drive machine and has been adopted in many applications. The difficulty of implementing its sensorless control at low and zero speeds is its multiple saliencies, which is much more significant than most other ac machines. The traditional decoupling methods provide successful results only under the condition that high-order saliencies are not stronger than half of the primary saliency. Furthermore, the behavior of the multiple saliencies is principally frequency dependent. Based on the characteristics of such machines, this paper proposes a multisignal injection method for realizing sensorless control. This method injects multiple high-frequency signals with different frequencies and magnitudes into the machine. Different frequency components in the response current signals are demodulated and then combined together to get the clear primary saliency signal, which is used to identify the rotor position. This new method was validated using a cwSPMSM at low speed. The experimental results proved the effectiveness and accuracy of the new method.

AC cascaded system is one of the basic components of the power conversion system in the modern more-electric aircraft (MEA). However, the AC cascaded system suffers instability problem, i.e., even each sub-system is stable individually, the formed cascaded system may become unstable. Most of the existing stabilization methods are linear control method which based on small signal model and only can ensure small signal stability near the operation point in theory. Therefore, these existing linear stabilization methods may be ineffective to fix large-signal stability issues. In this paper, a large signal stability constraining dichotomy solution (SCDS) based model predictive control (MPC) is proposed to improve the stability of the AC cascaded system in the MEA by the Lyapunov criteria. This approach first theoretically presents how to add the system stability item to the MPC cost function in an analytic way instead of using the traditional "experience based" weight method. Besides, the SCDS-MPC itself is also an improvement to the existing finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC). It can realize constant switching frequency and achieve better steady state/dynamic current control performance. Finally, a 1.5 kW AC cascaded system is fabricated in the lab to verify the proposed SCDS-MPC method.

This paper presents an FPGA-based (Field Programmable Gate Array) sensorless controller for Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (SMPMSM). A hybrid sensorless controller combining the signal injection technique and a linearly compensated flux observer is proposed. Using a Delta-Sigma A/D converter and FPGA oversampling technique, this work realizes a high performance high frequency (HF) injection sensorless control method which needs lower HF current response and introduces lower acoustic noises. The linearly compensated flux observer, based on back electromotive force (EMF) is used for sensorless control in the high speed range. The flux observer exhibits high dynamic and steady-state performance and is robust to parameter variation. Using model-based design, with the tools of MATLAB/Simulink and Simulink HDL (hardware description language) Coder, the whole control system is designed and implemented in a single chip. Experimental results demonstrate that the developed sensorless controller has high performance in the whole speed range.
This paper proposes an field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of a sensorless controller for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines. Position and speed are both estimated by a sliding mode observer (SMO) which is based on the PMSM stator frame model. The sliding mode manifold is chosen on the real stator current trajetory. In the SMO, a sign function of current error in the feedback correction is adopted. The estimated speed and position are realized on an FPGA controller by COordinate Rotation Digital Computer (CORDIC) algorithm. Using model-based design, with the tools of MATLAB/Simulink and hardware description language coder, the whole control system is designed and implemented in a single FPGA chip. Dedicated hardware optimization algorithms such as pipeline and resource sharing are developed for the implementation as well. The sign function is realized by fully hardware with a relatively high switching frequency. Meanwhile, a fast and practical rotation direction detection method which is based on back electromotive force information is proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed FPGA implemented sensorless SMO for PMSM drives is robust and has high performance.
In view of the existing problems of synchronous motor vector control system with mechanical sensor, sensor less motor control technology of synchronous motor is studied. A novel rotor position estimation method without mechanical sensor was suggested in this paper based on high-frequency signals injection into the rotor. With the structure of the synchronous motor itself as rotor position sensor, mathematical model for rotor position observer is established according to the principle of rotary transformer. The sensor less vector control model of synchronous motor is established based on the rotor high frequency signal injection. Simulation and experiment results show the reliability and a high level precision of the method.
